I wouldn't be surprised if this ends up becoming the next proposal of theirs.

Who is the publisher/what is the source of those images?

malec Aug 26, 2008 12:25 AM

We don't know. The guy who posted it on SSC said it was sent to him from his boss so he's going to ask about where it comes from.

It's amazing. Might we finally see one of these vertical cities that we've seen on endless amounts of Discovery Channel shows get built?

OhGreatOne Aug 26, 2008 1:06 AM

I cannot imagine this building becomming a reality for a few reasons, most of which would present insurmountable engineering obstacles:

I I believe that a building of such height--2380 metres-- would generate so much pressure on the bottom floors, framework and internal structure that the building would collapse long before reaching that height.

II Any supertall sways in the wind. They are designed this way to in order to accommodate the pressures of wind. At such a height, however, there are two problems: the potential for some seriously strong winds and the amount that a building sways is a function of its height. These two factors could cause the top of the tower to sway, perhaps as much as tens of metres during a particularly strong gale.

III Have there been any studies to measure the effects of the human body on frequent changes in air pressure. At that height, the air pressure is only about 72 percent of that at sea level. True, people do live at such altitudes. However, frequent exposure to sea level and high-level atmospheric pressures may possibly be a concern.

IV Of course, there are more mundane concerns. A tower of such height could become a terrorist target. Imagine the number of lives lost because some terrorist organisation has no respect for the dignity of human life.

No way this going to get build. Even Dubai can't afford this "hyper-super-maga" tower.

Brian. Aug 26, 2008 2:12 AM

Wow, I triple dog dare them to build it.

Dac150 Aug 26, 2008 2:45 AM

I just don't see the need. Where would all these people come from to occupy this tower. What would it be used for? Are people really going to want to live and work over a mile high? Can something of this size be funded by one organization?

I can appreciate the vision and ambition of a project like this (if it is a serious project) but there comes a point where a line must be drawn. I think the materials it would take to construct this tower could be put to better and more practical use and accomplish the same purpose.

Lecom Aug 26, 2008 3:19 AM

If anybody could pull it off, it's definitely Dubai.

staff Aug 26, 2008 10:39 AM

Yeah, the fact that this is visioned for Dubai is the only thing that makes me believe it might even have a little bit of truth to it.

zagreb Aug 26, 2008 11:13 AM

go for it

you got to love dubai, just when you think they cant surprise you any more, they do. All they need is for a barrel of oil to cost 1 dollar more, and this thing is paid off in ten years time, just about how long it will take to build, ha ha.

people were sceptical when burj dubai was a vision, and look now

malec Aug 26, 2008 11:38 AM

Impossible to build.
A tower this big might be possible but not this design. The floorplates are completely impractical.
I recon this could be some student project or something.

Oil is only 3 to 5 % of Dubai's GDP.

I agree this could be some student project but that doesn't make it impossible to build. Also the fact that you think the floorplates are impractical does not make it imposible to build.

I think the 6 twisting seperate parts that meet up every 100 levels is ingenious. A solid structure the size of this design especially near the bottom would mean alot of space with no outside view. To me this design is not about space - it is about height.

I believe it is possible to build this today. For now though it is only a vision - a very spectacular vision that hopefully goes to proposal, approval, U/C, and completed in my lifetime.

Not yet, but someday

Amazing. and BEAUTIFUL besides. However I believe we are still at least 20 years away still from having the technology to build such a hyper-tall structure. Nano-carbon would have to be the primary building material because it's much stronger and lighter than any materials currently available.

I think that in, say, 50-100 years from now, such hypertalls won't be uncommon.
But not yet, not now. Someday. Maybe.
Be patient.

Are you kidding me.......?

I hope they're planning to include a balancing weight thats AT LEAST 150 ft in diameter.

malec Aug 27, 2008 9:09 AM

I'd bet that this tower has less internal space than one WTC tower :)

Fury Aug 28, 2008 2:21 AM

Just some very quick and rough math.

The ground level siteplan has a scale.

Each of the 3 "legs" is approx. 110 by 60 meters = 6600 sq. m. This counts both the clockwise and counter clockwise "buildings".

Each WTC tower was approx 65 meters on a side = 4225 sq. m.

So counting the taper - to level 100 each "leg" is = to the area of one WTC tower. So by level 100 there is already area = to 3 WTC towers.

65% floor area below 100 levels - so approx 5 WTC towers all together.

Now count the 6 level triangular base which is approx 200 meters on a side and the central core - the structure is probably close to 5 1/2 WTC towers in area.

Not gigantic for what they are calling a sky "city" but much larger than one WTC tower. An area equal to 5 1/2 WTC towers would hold what - a few hundred thousand people ?

Also the 15 U/G circular parking levels are a million sq. ft. each. That is near 1/4 of the area of one WTC tower. So just about 4 WTC towers just in parking.

As I said before this structure is more about height than area but it would still be by far the biggest skyscraper ever.

I know - only a vision - but I really like the design and of course the height is fantastic.

Calgarian Aug 28, 2008 3:09 PM

This is probably the most retarded proposal yet.

JDRCRASH Aug 28, 2008 3:52 PM

Not retarded, but a clear answer to the city of Jeddah.
