Divided over downtown
High-rise hotel is a major part of the project

With an announcement of a high-rise downtown hotel development expected as early as this week, two groups are keeping a close eye on a strip of historic buildings on the block where the building will rise.

Supporters of the mixed-use development -- shown as a 40-story tower in preliminary plans -- say it will bring new life to the heart of downtown, and that it isn't economically feasible to keep the old buildings on the block.

yeah, i am too. this is prematurely announced as it is. maybe one will surface by the end of the week when the formal announcement in lexington is made.

Do we know what buildings would be demolished? Any pics by chance? Never mind, I found it.

the article says the building would be roughly as tall as the lexington financial center, but it's listed as 30 stories. this new tower is listed as 40 stories. so i'm not sure what's going on with that.

The original post says it will be the second tallest building in the state. That would put it just over 500 feet.

sorry, i was assuming the completion of museum plaza on that fact. second tallest after museum plaza. tallest before!

Aegon is around 550 feet while National City is just over 500 feet. National City is 40 floors so that's probably a fairly accurate indicator as to how tall this would be. Although residential floors tend to be slightly shorter so that could alter the height somewhat depending on how large the crown is.

From what I've seen thusfar it doesn't look taller than Aegon. With nothing around it, it's difficult to tell from the rendering what the accurate height will be.

awesome. i'd like to see a skyline pic of how it fits with the rest of the skyline. i'm proud of what lexington is doing downtown. it's a nice place to be nowadays. i wonder what hotel chains are going to be interested?

I am glad to see a new skyscraper being built in Lexington.
I lived in Austin, Texas for a long time and seeing that city being developed into what it is today makes me miss it so much. Lexigton has tons of potential; and with all the right developments we could have an amazing city. I am just hoping New Circle Road should start being constructed into more lanes cause we really need it.

Wow, that only took twenty years. I've been bitchin about our weak downtown ever since I moved here in 88'. It's nice to finally see something in the works. That's a pretty aggressive timetable for a block that's already occupied with other buildings. 2 1/2 years is pushing it for a site that has to be demolished and excavated before a 40 story tower goes up. Hope we can get this done.

It only took five years of posting on this site before I could finally post something about my own city.

on the city council meeting a few minutes ago they mentioned skyscraperpage as a good place to find information about the buildings in Lexington

oh cool, Louisville have huge city than Lexington. But Louisville, Ky have lot skyscraper project, so, look nice that city building in Lexington how tallest??

Whoa. That's pretty cool. It kind of reminds me of some of the highrises in Metropolis and other architecture from that era.

It would have to be taller than 549 feet since Aegon Center in Louisville is that height. This is of course if they're including the Museum Tower there.


By the way, you can vote in an online poll at the link below on whether you think it will be a good addition to Lexington's skyline or not.

I doubt they are including Museum Plaza in that statement. If it is going to be roughly as tall as the "Big Blue Building," then I think 500ft would probably be closer to that mark than 550ft. I would love for it to be as tall as possible, but I think they might be downplaying the height right now because of local affection for the BBB.

Lexingtons newspaper says the height is only 406 feet and explains this height because less room is needed between hotel and residential floors
