Seeing the columns rising above Peachtree is really starting to get me excited about this project and the impact it will have on retail along Peachtree.

seems like a great location for Atlanta's first Virgin Megastore or H&M.

Ditto!!!! I was suprise at the pace of this project. Btw, they are already clearing up the space for 1010 Peachtree, just up the street from Viewpoint.

A new rendering. Looks like the glass is no longer green.

A photo taken by ATLtransplant show hows much work has been done already. I have no idea about construction but this project seems to be going up at a fast pace to me.

According to the webcam, it looks like that they are prepairing some sort of "groundbraking ceramony." I noticed a white tent being put up in the parking lot at the top left of the cam shot.

DeliaC Sep 5, 2006 4:58 PM

Groundbreaking.

It looks like the retail unit(s) depicted on the far right of the latest rendering isn't under construction, and can't be until some more demolition occurs on that side. I wonder if they're waiting until phase II for that part?

Yeah..I hope they aren't planning on making a "spire corner" where the building doesn't come to the edge of the street corner.

mayhem Sep 18, 2006 6:48 PM

I think it will just be the last part of Viewpoint I's construction. I walked by today and noticed the same thing you had. They currently have large machinery in the R corner of the lot next to McCray's. Only time will tell.

ATLssMania Sep 20, 2006 6:36 PM

What retail would you like to see in Viewpoint? I posted this in another thread:

I think Viewpoint would be a good location for Diesel, Energie, Barney's Co-op, Abercrombie & Fitch and Sunglass Hut. There is no doubt that these stores would be successful because of the large gay community in the area that currently has to go elsewhere to buy these brands (and has large amounts of $ to spend on these brands).
Universal Gear has been in Metropolis for a few years and always has people in it.

Anyone know how we can forward these messages on to Novare and Selig?

smArTaLlone Sep 20, 2006 6:52 PM

Didn't someone hear a rumor that Niketown was interested in Viewpoint retail?

Sounds good. All we need now is H&M and Victoria Secrets Midtown Atlanta.

H & M is going to be in Atlantic Station next to Dillards in the empty lot across from FOX Sports Grill. I think it would have been better in Midtown, but at least we are finally getting one.

atlantaguy Sep 20, 2006 7:49 PM

^How did I miss this one? Have you heard anything regarding if this is one of their "flagship" locations?

A friend manages the MAC counter at Dillards and they told me as well as another friend.

Thanks, cp!

That lot you mentioned that H&M is coming into, will this be part of a new tower for residents or a hotel. I remember that AS wanted something large in that spot, they wanted to take that area to the next level????

What I heard was that it was going to be a tower (not sure how tall) and that H & M was going to be the ground floor tenant.

mayhem Sep 20, 2006 8:40 PM

I hope its not just retail in that lot.

jason21atl Sep 20, 2006 10:03 PM

I thought that was the plot that they were going to develop the flagship hotel for the development when they landed a deal......maybe that means their close to finalizing something.

Regarding the lot next to Dillards, it is supposed to have signature retail and a very upscale hotel. I have the brand written down somewhere, I'll try and dig it up.

Could it be the Grand Bohemian??

I was in Pasadena last week when H & M opened its first California store on Colorado Blvd.

People camped out overnight to be first in line!

I enjoy shopping H & M when in New York, but I was shocked that people would actually sleep on the sidewalk.

It'll be interesting to see the reaction in Atlanta when H & M opens.

SAV Sep 25, 2006 1:46 PM

when will H & M and the other shops that are being planned next to fox grill open?

And what kind of styles are at H & M

No date has been announced; I heard from people that work in Atlantic Station that it is to start construction 2007.

Link to H&M website...

Are you sure? I could have sworn I saw an HM when I went to SF...

ATLonthebrain Sep 26, 2006 1:19 AM

Yes, there is one in SF near Union Square. Think it's on Powell on the north side about a block below the square. I've been in it myself. Actually, I believe I've seen more than one in the Bay Area. But perhaps the one referenced above was the first in SoCal. That's more likely.

supastar Sep 26, 2006 10:52 AM

I remember when H&Ms began popping up around Manhattan, I thought they were the best thing since sliced bread. However, the love affair quickly wears off. They are great for basics and accessories but the sizing and quality is terrible. I've been in a couple lately and was really turned off. The clientele is all teenagers and thugs and the lines at the fitting rooms are very long and the staff not so friendly. I've found myself going back to the Gap and Banana Republic for quality, casual clothing. And Zara and French Connection, which i know you have in Atlanta now.

Clearly I'm wrong about that if the San Francisco already has an H & M.

I was basing my information on reports from the LA media, which reported extensively on the opening and did live remotes from the location of the new store for a couple of days(???). They also mentioned that another store would open in the LA area in a few months.

I should have known better than to trust the media for reliable information....LOL.

Looking south from 7th street you can see them working on the support columns on the 2nd floor.

I have a feeling it's gonna look good...

whiplash3825 Oct 4, 2006 4:44 PM

The concrete already has white additives, right (like Spire)? I sure wish they'd leave it natural like Twelve and Metropolis, but maybe with the smoky colored windows shown in the last rendering it won't be so bad. Love the retail portion though!

mayhem Oct 4, 2006 5:23 PM

It seems like it's just concrete so far.

Check out the Skypoint webcam in Tampa, also done by Novare, if you want to get a look at what Viewpoint will look like in about 8 months, except with greeish glass instead of blue.

To me, the parking deck pedestal looks better incorporated into this structure than in previous Novare designs. And the two-story retail extension will dress up Atlanta's Viewpoint even more. I really like it.

Great point. There really a lot less concrete exposed in Viewpoint than most of the others.

My reaction, when I look at this webcam, is that: for all the moaning about Atlanta's lack of urban density, we're still ahead of places like Tampa. The area around Skypoint looks a lot worse than the area of Midtown where Viewpoint is going.

That doesn't give me a lot of confidence, that Atlanta is more dense than Tampa! We should be light-years above every other southern city in my opinion. We'll get there in a few years I hope.

NYC32 Nov 17, 2006 7:52 PM

Tampa? does not compare to Atlanta.

john3eblover Nov 18, 2006 6:02 AM

density is overrated my friends

Agreed, supastar. You pretty much get what you pay for. Ironically, the stuff that's lasted the longest from H&M are the things I paid the most for. Also, since the value of the dollar has declined over the past few years, it seems their prices have gone up. It's not unusual to see work clothes there priced the same as those at some other mall stores. When they first opened, the most expensive thing in the store was a $50 coat. Now that coat is $60-70. My husband always scores in the men's department, though. The quality seems to be a little better there overall.
