The podium could use improvement, perhaps integration with the style of the rest of the tower. Other than that I kind of like it. Karma is the tower seen in behind.

Hopefully all we are seeing is the preliminary massing being used for council approval. the whole design or lack there of needs an overhaul. If 1 Bloor weren't just up the road, and the designs didn't seem to mirror each other then this may have been a somewhat interesting building. Or if this was built before 1 Bloor then it would have been ok, as of now it just seems like a cheap knockoff.

I hope the city approves the height but demands a redesign. Not that that will make a difference as seen in so many cases the developer can just go over the cities head with the OMB.

To bad we can't swap the locations of this one with Karma.

Some interesting points for thought.
I would like to see an image/rendering with both towers in view. One would then be able to see how they look together, and whether their similar designs actually work. There are a number of other condos in Toronto that are built to very similar looking designs, so it might actually work. Especially as these two will be located fairly close to each other.

Either way, I like the general look of this one.

Interesting thoughts. I think the contrast of One Bloor and the Casa twins will be fairly prominent.

and there is still quite a distance between this tower and 1 Bloor

I expected this project to be nothing more then a cheap version of 1 Bloor, but after seeing this render, I actually find the balcony glass interesting, and by the looks of it this tower will have quality curtain wall glazing. Hopefully.

The street level, on the other hand, is making me worry. Long expanses of a single material simply repeated is just awful for the streetscape. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Agreed, although I imagine this is really just a preliminary idea. I would postulate that the designer realises that many will look at this tower in relation to One Bloor and so would have to do something decent that would meet general approval at the podium for their reputation's sake.

An angular contrast to the fluid One Bloor.

^ Story is quite old but does anyone have any recent updates on this tower?

cruzin4u Feb 22, 2013 5:30 PM

The DRP (Design Review Panel) got a hold of this one and what you see on the right is the updated rendering of the project. Looks promising (much better than what was initially proposed which looks almost exactly like 1 Bloor).

Thanks to raptor for breaking the news.

I was rather nervous to see what they had come up with after the initial design was rejected. What a relief! That said, I've never understood the negativity to the original on the basis of it looking like One Bloor. One Bloor is a gorgeous design, one I don't mind being replicated 2-3 times.

The podium on the current proposal does look less jumbled while the tower height appears about the same. Let's build it.

DrNest Feb 22, 2013 6:42 PM

The new design is awful. It's bland and boxy. Nothing great to look at except decent height.
The previous design, which was essentially a 1 Bloor clone was much more aesthetically pleasing.

Redkey Feb 22, 2013 6:51 PM

Both designs are pretty bad. The podium on the first tower looks better though.

It's far better than 90% of the condos that get proposed. Pinnacle, Maple Leaf Square, City Place, Festival Tower, Infinity, Charlie, etc. are bland. This is boxy, but it's a vast improvement on the typical all glass condo we're used to getting. If I have to see one more building like that I'll throw up.

2221 Yonge? Now that's bland. This one has colour, visual interest, and looks like it belongs in a city centre. The others look like they belong in Mississauga.

This project is at 57 stories and is launching early this year under the moniker "YC Condos". There is talk from real estate agents that it could be 66 stories - so we'll see.

Thank you to BuzzBuzzHome for the breaking render.
