My 6 months around the world trip

Hello
Back in September 2018 i took a 6 months around the world trip and i ended up visiting 60 cities in 20 countries. I will be posting photos here on a regular basis in chronological order to document all the places i have visited. Feel free to ask any questions.

Stop 1 - Santiago, Chile
I stayed in Santiago for a month since i was there primarily to study Spanish at a local language school. This was one year before all the troubles with the protests started so i feel lucky to have experienced the city while it was safe.

Stop 3 - Puerto Varas, Chile
Puerto Varas is a city in the Lakes Region of Chile that was founded by German immigrants in 1853 and this is reflected in the architecture of the city and also in a large part of the population who are descendants of the original settlers. To reach Puerto Varas you need to fly into the city of Puerto Montt and then take a 30 minutes shuttle van ride from the airport. I stayed here for 4 nights.

Stop 4 - Punta Arenas, Chile
I flew from Puerto Montt to Punta Arenas and stayed here for 3 nights. It is easy to see how wealthy this city was in the past just by looking at the elegant mansions scattered all around the city. An interesting fact about Punta Arenas is that 50% of the population who lives here have Croatian heritage.

Oh man, Chile looks amazing. Especially Puerto Varas (which I had never heard of before).

Beautiful photos and really looking forward to future installments.

Stop 5 - Puerto Natales + Chilean Patagonia
I took a bus from Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales (2 hours and 45 minutes) a quaint little town at the edge of the Chilean Patagonia and a number of important national parks. This city is the main base for any trekkers who get ready to go on multi days expeditions.

beautiful chile wow. looks like you were there the year after we visited. and you had maybe a bit more clear weather.

when we were in santiago we took a day trip to the andes and when in valpo another day trip to isla negra and wine country just south.

then we made the choice to go to easter island instead of patagonia or up to atacama.

its interesting what people chose to do when they visit. there is so much you could do and see, but not all on one trip! chile is definately a place you want to return to and explore further.

looking forward to the rest of your world tour -- this will be a great adventure to see through your eyes.

I had been to the Atacama desert on a previous trip to Chile and left Patagonia for when i had more time since moving around requires a bit of planning and you need lots of time to see things there. I visited Patagonia in October 2018 and the weather was perfect (cold just the way i like it but long days and clear skies) the only thing i did not like was bees and wasps, i wasn't expecting them to exist at such latitude and with that climate!

Stop 6 - El Calafate + Argentinian Patagonia
I took a bus from Puerto Natales to El Calafate in Argentina and the ride took 5.5 hours. El Calafate is the main base for people wanting to explore the Argentinian side of Patagonia and all the various glaciers including the famous Perito Moreno

This thread is amazing, thanks pallo! I may not be able to physically travel at the moment, but at least I can travel vicariously through your photos.

Ushuaia, Argentina looks a lot like a SA version of Reykjavik.

IMBY Jul 29, 2020 7:10 PM

Can't thank you enough for those uploads!

I was in Chile in 2008. I landed in Santiago and immediately flew up to Arica at the Peruvian border, then bussed it south all the way to Concepcion and beyond.

I really enjoyed going thru the Atacama Desert, driest desert in the world, with only .01 precipitation per year.
