The London Underground has been subject to many thousands of deaths from suicides, accidents and murders to terrorist attacks dating back to the 18th century right through to the recent 7th July 2005 attacks in which fifty six people died. The Underground system has also seen major national tragedies such as the 1943 Bethnal Green Station Disaster when 173 people were crushed to death whilst trying to seek shelter from German bombing. More recent tragedies include the Moorgate Station Disaster in 1975 when a London underground train failed to stop and ploughed head long in to the tunnel wall at Moorgate Station killing over 40 people and the 1987 Kings Cross Underground Station fire which killed 31 people. There are numerous other such tragedies, acts of terrorism and disasters, some of which are listed here - http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A17895702 Underground workers often undercover graves when completing work on the system, some dating back to the great plague of 1665 and beyond. :) |
