I got this shot today from my dentist's office at 450 Sutter--222 makes great infill and 45 Lansing popped into view with its crown currently being constructed.

Ah, 450 Suffer--where everyone gets their teeth pulled. Gotta say, your dentist has much better views than mine!

Taken 3/15/15. Looks like crane should be coming down from this project within a week or two. Lobby progress made this past week. Looking good...I think this project looks better at night than during the day. Not sure that's a good thing, though.

There was a good discussion in the Rundown thread about how this building fits within its context. The massing is definitely odd, and that really shows itself from the south and east. But from the north and west, I think it fits in pretty good.
Looking east down Howard: https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8794/...acbb3c5f_c.jpg It helps having another tall building on the block, but that's part of its context. I also think it looks pretty good looking south down Second, even though it's a much larger scale than the preceding block: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7703/...9e8485c1_c.jpg But looking north up Second, ugh: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7662/...869f7e48_c.jpg Farther back, it helps. But unlike the Hawthorne on Howard, the building on the left isn't tall or close enough to effectively mitigate the awkward massing from this angle: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7676/...b530e0f5_c.jpg (I'm basically standing in the one spot where it does help.) I couldn't get a good shot looking west down Howard, but that is probably its worst angle. All-in-all, it's not a bad building now from at least half the angles from which you typically see it (in terms of massing; I personally love the skin). And I think it will only be helped as additional taller buildings are built around it. There are several slated for the blocks east of it and I think those will make a big difference. |
I must disagree with those who don't like the building's massing or color or site--this tower symbolizes the southward march of the Financial District.

This building's glass is so dark. It almost looks black on an overcast day and reminds me of the Monolith.

oh, i hadn't realized that they'd dropped the plan for that crown. a real shame.

Re: the 'missing crown': they just made that uppermost level, which hides the mechanical equipment, flush with the rest of the tower. Count the floors.
|
right, but it's no longer set back and rising above the roof/mech, you're right on with the floor count though.
