You're right, but that is the current situation since after 9/11. Before that, the former WTC( although shorter than the Sears Tower by 86 feet) was enough to tie New York's and Chicago's skylines by overall height of all the buildings. After the Sears, the Twins and the ESB were the 2nd,3rd, and 4th tallest buildings in the US respectively. With 1 WTC, 432 Park, One 57, and other projects rising, NYC might regain that title again if Chicago doesn't get any demand in the future. But for better or worse, they are both the cities that have the potential to build the first 2,000 footer in the Western world.

Yeah, it would be pretty cool if Chicago can boost some supertalls too. Right now NY is pretty much alone in the U.S. :-/

By 2014/15 it will probably look like this:

By pinnacle height:

Chicago:
1. Willis Tower, 527m
2. John Hancock Center, 457m
3. Trump International Hotel & Tower, 423m
4. Aon Center, 346m
5. AT&T Corporate Center, 307m
6. Two Prudential Plaza, 303m

New York:
1. One World Trade Center, 545m
2. Empire State Building, 449m
3. 432 Park Avenue, 426m
4. Bank of America Tower, 366m
5. Three World Trade Center, 352m*
6. Conde Nast Building, 341m
7. Chrysler Building, 319m
8. New York Times Tower, 319m
9. Hudson Yards South Tower, 310m**
10. One57, 306m

By roof height:

Chicago:
1. Willis Tower, 442m
3. Trump International Hotel & Tower, 357m
3. Aon Center, 346m
4. John Hancock Center, 344m

New York:
1. 432 Park Avenue, 426m
2. One World Trade Center, 419m
3. Empire State Building, 381m
4. Three World Trade Center, 329m*
5. Hudson Yards South Tower, 310m**
6. One57, 306m

* if construction resumes (currently at the 7th floor)
** construction should begin this fall

Let's hope Chicago comes back on track. :)

Assuming everything goes as planned, these will be the skyscrapers with roof heights over 300M in NYC at various stages of completeion, construction and site prep by 2020:

Key:
: No work has been done on this building at the time of this post
: Site prep, no matter how minimal, has been done at the time of this post
: Construction is on hold
: The building is under construction
■ : The building has been completed

Grand Central Tower ~500M (Site Prep by 2020)
225 W57th ~450M (Completed by 2020)
432 Park -425M (Completed by 2016)
One World Trade Center -417M (Completed 2013)
Two World Trade Center -411M (Completed by 2020)
Hudson Yards North Office Tower -394M (Completed by 2018)
Empire State Building -381M (Completed 1931)
15 Penn -371M (Site Prep by 2020)
One Manhattan West -371M (Completed by 2020)
Three World Trade Center -327M (Completed by 2018)
Girasole -323M (Completed by 2020) (Possibly +400M)
Tower Verre -320M (Completed by 2018)
Hudson Yards South Office Tower -310M (Completed by 2015)
One57 -306M (Completed 2013)
34th and 10th Street +304M (Site Prep by 2020)
One Hudson Yards +304M (Completed by 2020)
Hudson Yards Mixed-used Tower +304M (U/C by 2020)
237 Park +304M (Site Prep by 2020)

After finishing this list all I could think of was "Whoa!"

This decade will rewrite the books when it comes to the skyline of NYC if even half of this stuff gets built, but I'm very confident that the vast majority of these buildings will get built. Not to mention the ones that haven't even been revealed yet.

amazing :D i think theres some others also, im not good with the street names its like 41 and 42nd street or something

and is there any news on grand central tower? i dont think theres a thread about it so no updates that i can read

yankeesfan1000 Sep 4, 2012 9:13 PM

^^

No info on Grand Central Tower so far. It won't start to really move forward until the rezoning of East Midtown goes through, so I think anything solid is a few years away. But since it'll be rezoning the largest CBD in the world, across the street from GCT, I'm confident once the rezoning does get approved, that will instantly become one of the most valuable developable sites in the country, and should come together relatively quickly depending on what the economy is like then.

Also, Eidolon, that list made my jaw drop. It's one thing to have all those towers rattling around in your head, but it's another to see them listed like that. By 2020 NY should be the near unanimous #1 skyline in the world. Certainly exciting times.

A megatall (~2000 ft) tower in Midtown Manhattan.
Not a real proposal, just a hobby study.
Looks pretty nice imho.

Fardeb Sep 8, 2012 9:41 AM

Not that it doesn't already have an argument, but if a decent amount of these supertalls get built NYC will have a very strong claim again as the worlds most impressive skyline.

The mix of height/density/scale will be hard to match. Some cities already are or will be beating it in one category or the other but New York will have a pretty unique mix of the three if it has 15+ supertalls sprouting up in the midsts of its sea of other towers.

hunser Sep 8, 2012 1:43 PM

^ Absolutely. New York has the density, uniqueness, style and mass (250 skyscrapers over 500 feet!). All it lacks is height. With 1WTC, 4WTC and One57 nearing completion the skyline already got a height boost.

I did a quick calculation (based on official height, 1 and 4WTC included. One57 and 1715 Broadway are not included.):

Average height 10 tallest buildings: 334,7m (~1100ft)
Average height 50 tallest buildings: 243,4m (~800ft)

PS: As of now NY has 56 buildings exceeding 200m (656ft).

-Filipe- Sep 8, 2012 1:52 PM

i wish their was a render with all of these proposals, construction, and on hold projects in a render. Like one that show slower manhattan and in the background u have the midtown skyline :D

I guess the quota was met. 3 buildings near or above supertall status have been topped off in NYC in 2012. The next big year might be in 2014 or 2017.

2015 will see 432 Park and the "shorter" Hudson yards supertall top out at the least and 3WTC will also probably top out then.

2017 will see the Hudson Yards mixed-use tower and the taller north office tower at Hudson Yards top out and I think 2WTC will also have topped out by this time too.

That leaves the Tower Verre, Brookfield's Supertall(s?), Girasole and One Hudson Yards, all of which are likely to top out before 225 W57th is completed in 2018 or 2019, but before any of the towers in the midtown rezoning area begin construction (the earliest starting date for them I see is some time in late 2019 or early 2020), leaving only 15 Penn and 34th and 10th with a schedule that I can't guesstimate beyond the fact that they too will be built some day.

I agree, most to all those projects should be coming up in the near future.

Brookfield's supertalls are in preparation as the is work on the site to cover up the railroads, in preparation for the buildings. But the actual project is trying to get tenants, and of course competing with the Hudson Yards to do so. The Hudson yards by the way, seem to be on top demand for tenants, so many of the buildings in that area should be coming up sooner or later after the South and North towers start to rise. 15 Penn, umm, eh, let's just say that project is having some problems with the general public so we just have to wait and see what happens...

Updated the first page.

So far we have...
1. 1WTC, topped out (steel)
2. One57, topped out
3. 4WTC, topped out
4. 1715, topped out

(counting only 200m+ towers, as always)

Not bad.

Coming back to live:

1. 107 West 57th Street, 697ft (212m).
Rendering:

2. 610 Lexington Avenue, 704ft (215m).

Still on hold:

1. 30 Park Place
2. 56 Leonard Street
3. 50 West Street

hunser Sep 26, 2012 1:25 PM

New York has now 58 skyscrapers over 200m completed and topped out, respectively.

425 Park's (conceptual) design. IF the rezoning of Midtown Manhattan is passed, a tower 50% bigger could be built starting in 2018. In my opinion it's a pretty box with plenty of character and I hope the final design isn't too different from this concept. A height increase certainly wouldn't hurt though.

A partnership among L&L Holding Company and Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. (LBHI), today announced the selection of Foster + Partners, led by Pritzker Prize winning architect Lord Norman Foster, to design an iconic 650,000 square foot office tower to be constructed to L.E.E.D. sustainability standards at 425 Park Avenue in the famed Plaza District of Manhattan. The firm will work with the partnership to create an enduring landmark that befits its exclusive location yet is also of its current time and place.

Foster + Partners was selected at the conclusion of an international architects competition, a six-month process involving many of the world’s most acclaimed architecture firms. In addition to Foster + Partners, the partnership selected Rogers, Stirk, Harbour + Partners (Lord Richard Rogers), OMA (Rem Koolhaas) and Zaha Hadid Architects to participate in the final, conceptual design phase of the competition over the summer.

I know, but I will believe that when I see detailed renders and perhaps not even then. Lots of plans are put out for supertowers, but more often their height is adjusted down before construction instead of up. We will see though. America needs more supertalls in my opinion.

Currently there stands a large vacant lot where 225 West 57th once stood, future home to an Extell Development 1000-1400 foot tall (?) mixed use tower that is rumored to be the future home of the tallest Nordstrom in all the land. Extell has taken out a couple of adjoining buildings as well as the building just to the north on West 58th Street.

Across the street on the north side of 58th Street the back tower of once and future 220 CPS has completed demolition, a couple of next door buildings are coming down (219 and 221 West 58th), and work has begun on the demolition of the front tower of 220 CPS that faces CPS. They are laying waste to the whole area! 220 CPS has been subject to a battle between Extell Development that owns (owned?) the garage space and Vornado that owns everything else. Last we heard from any source was that Extell was taking Vornado to court, but some settlement surely must have been worked out, as the only thing that is coming out of that garage at this point is a bobcat moving debris.
220 CPS is active despite the odds.

The foundation of the Jenga tower at 56 Leonard Street has sat untouched for more than three years, while its starchitects Herzog & de Meuron planned copycat towers in Beirut and Bangkok. But it's NYC's turn now. The Tribeca Trib and Tribeca Citizen report that construction will resume on 56 Leonard…next week. It will still be a while before the building depicted in the renderings exists in reality: it will take three months just to put in Con Ed utility vaults, and another year and a half to build the superstructure. Facade work will begin next summer, and the building will be finished in spring 2016. All digits crossed, please
And 56 Leonard is starting next week.

All in all, I'd say that this has been a very eventful week for New York skyscrapers.

Are these the heights for the tallest occupied space or all the way to the crown/roof? It would be a pleasant surprise if the Coach Tower would be about 100 feet taller, but it would be pure awesome if the North Tower were 100 feet taller than the height listed.

Based on the selected design (Foster and Partners), it's real.

Hopefully we'll get something taller, if the Midtown rezoning is approved, but the current Foster design definitely appears 800+.

Holy shitballs, that is amazing! One of the sexiest renders Ive ever seen. It kinda reminds me of the robot manufacturers headquarters in AI with Will Smith in Chicago.

Can't wait until the official renderings for 225 W 57th are released. That will be #6
then after that the Grand Central Terminal Tower will be the 7th 400m+ tower
and possibly a new Girasole at #8...

While I was re-reading the 15 Penn thread, this caught my attention and I immediately thought it would be a good idea to mention them in this thread.

Moynihan Station air rights up for grabs
August 19, 2010 12:00PM

Moynihan Station: The state and the city have re-entered negotiations with Vornado Realty Trust and the Related Companies over the sale of 1 million square feet of air rights for the new Moynihan Station, according to Tim Gilchrist, the new president of the Moynihan Station Development Corp. The developers entered into an agreement with the state in 2006 to develop the Farley Post Office into a new train station and to use the air rights to build an adjacent mixed-use development topped by a 67-story tower, Crain's reported. But the plan, which included $110 million from the sale of the air rights, was never approved by the Public Authorities Control Board. Instead, the recession forced the state to split the development into two phases. Eventually, federal stimulus funding provided the final $83 million needed to build the $267 million first phase. The initial construction contracts were approved Monday, and now attention is turning to funding the $1 billion second phase. The Farley building -- which occupies the square block between 31st and 33rd streets and Eighth and Ninth avenues -- comes with 2.5 million square feet of transferable air rights. Related and Vornado have dibs on the first 1 million square feet, but the remaining 1.5 million are up for grabs. The agreement that gives Related and Vornado exclusive development rights expires in 2012. [Crain's]

One will rise on the southwest corner of 7th and W34th where the Footaction and Torneau stores are located.

http://ny.racked.com/uploads/2010_03_Tourneau2.jpg

The other will rise where this one-story Duane Reade is located, which is on the southeast corner of 34th and 8th.

Nice catch Eidolon. I'm surprised those lots have gone undeveloped for this long. That corner directly north of the one with the Duane Read, with the TGI Fridays would also be a nice corner to get redeveloped.

They are haven't been torn down yet for the same reason that Hotel Penn hasn't, it isn't financially feasible to do so yet.

The TGI Fridays is just one of many grimy lowrises in that part of 34th street that are ripe for redevelopment.

DrNest Nov 12, 2012 4:39 PM

Agreed. Would much rather see that TGI get bulldozed than the hotel Penn. I know it is just pipe dreaming, but I'd rather 15 Penn Plaza was built there than in place of the hotel. It's a beautiful old building. (At least from the outside anyways.)
