Something to keep in mind is the table gaming push PA legislators are currently making in light of the budget crisis they face. Taking the easy road politics aside, should that pass the 'slots barn' nomenclature will become irrelevant before it ever really sets up shop in Philadelphia.

Whether that leads to accelerated phasing/hotels/etc is up for debate...

A push for table-game gambling in Pennsylvania

Also, I was fairly syked when seeing the original SH renderings - sans beheamoth parking garage - as it seemed more of an entertainment complex than casino. However with the "scaled down" plan now in effect, I'm wondering what will and won't be left out of the original design? Will it be purely a slots barn with no hi-rise, retail, condos, etc? If so, I think the negative effects of having a casino in the area will be more significant than if other elements were incorporated into it?

What they are "planning" on doing is building this in stages. By law, they are required to have a specific number of slot machines in place in a very short amount of time, so the building that will house the main casino floor, a bar or two and a kitchen, along with parking lots will be built first to meet this requirement. They just don't have enough time to get their whole plan built to meet the state's timeframe. After that, the rest of the complex is scheduled to be phased in over a period of (I think) 4 years including the parking garage, some buildings along the periphery and, eventually, the hotel.

They have already invested, what, $165 million in this? I really doubt they will cut and run after just building the "scaled down" plan; especially if table gaming is approved.

Slot BARNS be gone....

Shame, in a sense. A classy casino in the Strawbridge Building would have been great for Market East.

Table games in Pa. are all but assured
By Suzette Parmley

HARRISBURG - The last piece of the budget that Gov. Rendell finally signed Friday night has not quite clicked into place.

But everyone in the middle of the 101-day budget marathon considers this final item a fait accompli. Legislators expect to get it done this week. The budget won't balance without it.

In fact, the people with the most to gain are so confident of its passage that they have already cleared thousands of square feet of space on the floors of their casinos.

Thanks to the budget crisis, legalized gambling in Pennsylvania is about to expand dramatically.

Between 2001 and 2008, investors in Pennsylvania's 14 licensed gaming facilities gave $4.4 million to political campaigns in the state, according to a study by the self-styled watchdog group Common Cause. Millions more came from lawyers and lobbyists representing those interests, the study found. (Campaign reports for any donations made during the 101-day budget stalemate aren't available yet.)

"There is a recognition amongst all parties that table games are coming to Pennsylvania," Marcy, Eachus' spokesman, said Friday after a table-games bill passed the Senate 29-20.

The legislation now goes to the House and may be voted on as soon as Tuesday. If it reaches Rendell's desk this week, table games could be running by spring. The state Gaming Control Board has said it would need six to nine months to be ready to regulate the new games.

No sign of British fort at casino-site dig

By Jennifer Lin

Archaeologists working at the SugarHouse casino site between Fishtown and Northern Liberties have concluded their field work without finding any trace of a Revolutionary-era British fort, a casino spokeswoman said yesterday.

But the abundance of Native American relics unearthed during the dig, some dating back 3,000 years, has drawn the interest of a New Jersey band of the Leni-Lenape Indians.

Casino spokeswoman Leigh Whitaker said archaeologists from A.D. Marble & Co. of Conshohocken found "thousands of artifacts," ranging from Indian artifacts to fragments of pottery.

"We thought what they would mostly find would be colonial things," said Chester Shadow Walker Robinson, a Cherokee chief from New Jersey. "We know there was a Lenape burial ground in that area." He said that if there were any human remains, "we'd like to reclaim them for proper burials."

Historians say ancient trails that were heavily used by tribes - which became Frankford and Germantown Avenues - ended near the waterfront. Before the arrival of European settlers, tribes would encamp on the Delaware to fish and hunt, returning to inland settlements in the winter, said Ken Milano, a Kensington historian.

The absence of any evidence of the British redoubt from 1777 has disappointed local historians, who pressured SugarHouse to look for it.

Whitaker said archaeologists looked for evidence of the small fort on Dec. 3 and 4. She said archaeologists found that the area had been "highly disturbed," perhaps when utility lines were installed decades ago.

Are there any projects for parks, development etc. around the Philly waterfront including the Penns landing area. This casino stuff is ridiculous. I have just been out of the Philly loop in regards to what's going on for a little while. I plan on visiting the city again within a month or two if possible.

I've heard rumors of planned work being done at Penn Treaty Park north of the casino site. There's a bike trail now running from south of Penn's Landing to Pier 70 in South Philly, too...

There have been studies after studies, but no solid projects in the works. Just lofty ideas and consultant fees collected.

I've been by to check on the progress of SugarHouse on a regular basis. It looks like it's moving right along. And what about the folks from Casino Free Philadelphia who said they would be out there protesting every day of construction? What happened to the protesters who held this up unnecessarily for four years?

They'll be some of the first people to sign up for a Sugarhouse card so they can start earning free buffets.

Plokoon11 Jan 21, 2010 9:37 PM

Yeah while going to Go Vertical rock climbing, I had front row seats to the construction at Sugar House. I was quite surprised to actually finally see steel. Is the hotel still part of the building tho?

BUILDER5000 Jan 22, 2010 2:37 AM

I think this is just the temporary structure which does not include the hotel phase?

Phillybud Jan 22, 2010 6:10 AM

Did you say FREE BUFFETS?

When do they open???!!:eat:

Sugarhouse is going to be hideous. The interem development will look like the Lowes/ Best Buy strip mall in Plymouth Meeting. Mainly surface parking lots. Phase 1 +2 if they ever happen are supposed to expand with a parking garage and hotel.

Don098 Jan 26, 2010 2:01 AM

Yea, this thing looks like sh&$ already. Just wait until the homeless people and losers show up at this slots barn once it opens. Great development plan, real smart. What a waste.

looper121 Jan 26, 2010 2:58 AM

Well, this is going to be a real treat for the waterfront...Can we just get full table gaming, and do these right?

theWatusi Jan 26, 2010 3:05 AM

The table gaming bill passed.
