Update - CIA/Stack Building - Pearl Building
 
:banana: Look what's going up at the Pearl:banana:
I had seen a mobile crane in place for the last week or so, but this went up today.

So now we have 5 cranes in and around DT:
  • Embassy Suites RW
  • 10-story Justice Center
  • Durango Phase - Victoria Commons

3 are mobile but the amount of action is exciting.

Pearl project manager Barbara English said Pearl is currently only 15% complete. Imagine when the other 85% of the vision is online. Amazing.

The new building at the Pearl is going up quickly. Looks like the first floor is over half finished already.

With a majority of it being a garage, I would think the entire thing could be ready to go by next spring. Hopefully by then, there will be some movement over at the 1221 to get some activity going on in that area.

The Twig bookstore in Alamo Heights might be moving to the Pearl.

^^ Could Geis have come across as more bitter in that article?? Yikes.

(Also, they should tell him that when Ed Cross' Broadway shell project comes online, the Twig will have all the foot traffic it needs...you know the one...the development that was Geis' but when bankrupt? Ouch.)

This comment let's me know the kind of mindset that he has. Glad he made that comment. Now I can toss him in the pile with all the other "old-school, quick-money" developers.
and yeah... sounds a little bitter to me. I'm guessing that he also thinks that those guys developing the Pearl don't know what they are doing? We've seen the community (neighborhood and across SA) support the existing businesses and the Farmers Market. They will continue to support the Twig, even if it does move 5 minutes down the road. What you are doing now though is creating "community" businesses with local owners for future residents to support, in a much more dense environment, (once the housing comes online.)
Sustainable development. Something that hasn't been happening too much in SA for the last 45 years.

In fairness to Geiss, he did start the downtown development in that area, and it was a residential project. That project will go forward one day, it's not changing into something else.

He had a dispute with a sub-contractor and probably was a little over his head and needed deeper pockets. I can understand that he would be bitter because he was not able to see this through.

Speaking of Pearl, we were in San Antonio this weekend and spent some time there.

We went to dinner Friday night at Il Sogno. I was a little surprised at the size and layout of the place. The kitchen is open and right there as you first walk in, but not really in the middle, so you don't really see it in action unless you're sitting at the bar next to it. The main area seems small, but they have an upstairs and some outside seating as well. The food was great.

We stopped by again on Saturday morning. The farmer's market had a nice feel to it. There was a lot of foot traffic, but the produce offerings were really small (it's Texas, it's summer and of course the drought). I expected to see someone pushing olive oil.

We also stopped in to Melissa Guerra's cooking shop. There were a lot of people looking but no one was buying.

The building itself has a lot of potential. I can see it being a destination in the long run and good location to be. The bookstore would be welcomed addition.

HDRC agenda for the 16th is recommending final approval for the 'Pearl Ice House.'
It will be on the corner of the parking lot by the turn basin behind the Full Goods Building.

Now official:
The Twig Book Shop is moving

and also, looks like Andrew Weissman, owner of il Signo, already at the Pearl, is closing Le Rêve on Pecan to expand more at the Pearl.

For the Pearl, a chef of Weissman's pedigree adds to the culinary attractions of the complex, which includes the third U.S. campus of the Culinary Institute of America and cookbook author Melissa Guerra's import store. Sandbar is moving there in October, and CIA grad Johnny Hernandez plans to open a Mexican restaurant called La Gloria.

“We feel like he has brought a lot to Pearl in terms of supporting our mission,” said Darryl Byrd, director of Pearl operations. “Some things just sort of organically come together and work very well, and we want to see where it goes.”

As part of Weissman's plan, he's proposing four new places at the Pearl.
“I'm looking at doing a die-hard Spanish tapas place,” he said. “I'm not holding anything back.”

Still, Weissman said, closing Le Rêve is “bittersweet.”

“I know it's trite, but one chapter ends, and another starts,” he said.

The Ice House Restaraunt and Bar will help tie the entire development to the Riverwalk. They just got approval from the zoning commission. :yes:
