Assiniboine park is a jewel. We are lucky to have a park like it.

Cyro Oct 9, 2013 4:13 PM

^ It is a jewel and it's getting more of it's lustre back:)

Have not had a chance to visit the centre yet but it is very nicely done with the duck pond do over. It blends very well with the landscape. Nice job by number Ten

PROJECT Assiniboine Park Washroom Boxes, Winnipeg, Manitoba
ARCHITECT Peter Sampson Architecture Studio
TEXT W. Carson McCance
PHOTOS Mat Piller and Elaine Stocki

To those that know it, Winnipeg has always been difficult to label or categorize. Cosmopolitan yet rooted in an agrarian tradition, at times resolutely afraid of any perception of non-utility or cultural expression for its own sake, the city can and does produce music, art, literature, and architecture that is interrogative and wholly demonstrative of a pronounced local voice. A construction industry that not only withstood recent economic downturns but thrived in what most consider a “have-not” province frames an architectural environment that sees world-class projects going up alongside the worst lowest-common-denominator, developer-driven buildings. Even the weather plays its role: bitterly cold winters and at times tropical summers that residents cheerfully endure with a pioneer’s hardiness and pride. It is interesting, given these conditions, that Peter Sampson Architecture Studio has with the Assiniboine Park washrooms so cleverly interrogated the processes of sustainability and transformation. Through a relatively humble typology and program, PSA Studio has created a deceptively nuanced contextual dialogue.

The new Roblin Blvd. gate is close to completion. Outer insulation remaining to be covered and interior yet to be completed.
Looks sharp. Exciting year for the zoo coming up.

Roblin Ave? Seriously freep editors! And that gate is actually in Corydon Ave, not Roblin Blvd.

Doesn't Corydon become Roblin at Shaftsbury/Conservatory Drive?

No, further west. Although I'm seeing 2595 Roblin Blvd as the address of the zoo so perhaps they have changed it since my courier days 20 years ago.

bomberjet Mar 21, 2014 7:07 PM

Lol it's Roblin Blvd. And the change happens at the main entrance to the park. So yes, the new gate is on Roblin Blvd.

You are correct. But 20 years ago Roblin Blvd addresses didn't start until Charleswood.

Thanks Cyro, I will be back in Winnipeg at the beginning of July for a trip and am hoping this is open. The girlfriend has never been east of BC (Aussie ) and this would be amazing to do. As well growing up her favourite books were Winnie the Pooh and guess who's mind was blown when I told her the story haha so a visit to the statue is in order too.

Hope it's completed as well and you and your g/f enjoy it..:)

Funny you mention Winnie, I was in a movie shot here back in 2004, called a "Bear Named Winnie". Locations for the shoot were in Crescentwood, the Zoo, Birds Hill Park and Stony Mountain.

Cool story.(no hd video sorry)

I heard (second hand) last night that Assiniboine Park is planning to add new roads/parking in the park, resulting in the loss of some of the fields that are currently rented to sport leagues.

Does anyone have any more reliable information about this?

Cyro Sep 25, 2015 8:42 PM

Great addition, always excited to here about new projects and upgrades to the Zoo and Assiniboine Park...

Just adding it here as well...

Any idea where that building would be located in the park?

Edit: Just read the article - southeast corner of the park. Article also says this is the final major phase of the redevelopment of the park.

I thought the zoo was in the process of being completely revamped. New areas and new enclosures for all the animals, not just the new entrance and new polar bear exhibit. Is that part of the $200 million redevelopment of the park or are the improvements to the zoo part of a separate funding scheme?

I really hope they plan to resurface the back road loop of the park nearest the river as part of the improvements. Some sections were in terrible shape.

The rendering is accurate as well. People in parkas instead of palm tress.
