^ precast concrete columns. Presumably they will eventually be matched with precast beams and slabs.

I haven't personally used this type of construction in any project I've worked on, but it seems like it would work pretty slick. Especially in cold weather, forming and building the concrete offsite in a heated, controlled environment.

Riverman Feb 10, 2013 3:39 PM

That is pretty slick. Will the exterior slabs be precast as well?

drew Feb 11, 2013 3:59 PM

^ not sure. But I presume if they are using this construction technique, they will try and maximize its use throughout the building.

jmt18325 Feb 11, 2013 10:44 PM

It sure goes up fast this way.

is the Glasstower starting as well or is it only ALT at the moment?

jmt18325 Feb 12, 2013 4:30 AM

The Glasshouse/parkade site looks to be in the very early stages.

bomberjet Feb 14, 2013 12:36 AM

The hotel is to be made of prefab rooms, I believe. So seems like it's a prefab building assembled on site.

1ajs Feb 14, 2013 4:06 AM

quite a bit of progress this week and those are some prity high floor spacings no?

Looks like some nice high ceilings! You can see the columns are a lot larger where the tower will be over head. The first two adjacent to the existing building are smaller than the others farther out.

1ajs Feb 14, 2013 6:53 PM

Wow, talk about production efficiency!

I hope the chairs aren't screwed to the floor though, I like to move the chairs around in hotel rooms.

If it fits like lego yes! Though like lego I'm sure there will be a missing piece or two..

1ajs Feb 14, 2013 7:28 PM

will this be a first of its kind in winnipeg?

It is the first construction in the city like this that i have heard of but it is nothing really that new. The Cruise ship building industry makes all of their ships like this.

The contractor Nova-Con will essentially just have to plug them in....sort of speak.

wags_in_the_peg Feb 14, 2013 8:18 PM

it sounds easy, but it's not

1ajs Feb 15, 2013 3:47 AM

glass house is definalty being worked on. theres a drill drilling holes for piles and the site has ben level slightly below grade

bomberjet Feb 15, 2013 4:25 PM

There's that video at the beginning of this thread showing the Chinese throwing up those building in like two days or something. Pretty impressive. Shows how quick it really can go, but that's having everything ready to go and waiting. I'm assuming the prefab rooms coming from Quebec won't be standing in line downtown to be put in place.
