Can't say i'm a fan of the drive-thru, it looks weird. the whole building looks strange....

Are there windows on the left side of the Maverick building? If so, their view is pretty much diminished.

BNF Sep 9, 2013 10:20 PM

What are the cross streets of this building? It does have a really odd look to it.

You are not the only one...

from HDRC notes
Quote:

RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends conceptual approval based on the findings above with the following stipulations:
1. The possibility of vehicular access through College Street is explored
2. The fenestration pattern along the west side of the front facade is revised to align as close as possible to the adjacent
Maverick building.
3. Window proportions follow nearby historic facades
4. More articulation is incorporated on the east and south elevations to avoid large expanses of blank walls
5. Information on location of mechanical systems is submitted during final approval
There are windows facing East on the Maverick. Their view will be gone, but they will at least get some light. It looks like only the front two windows align with the lot line; not so much for the rest of it.

To the East is Broadway-Losoya/Houston. To the West is Jefferson-N. Presa/Houston. College St. is the one "behind" the hotel.

Update: Construction will begin in July.

Also of note, according to the architectural records filed for this project, the price tag for this project is $510 million.

:stunned: 510 million? For a 10 story building? Its isn't even a Waldorf. That can't be right. I can figure 51 million for the building, not 51 million a floor. It must be a typo.

kornbread Jan 21, 2014 4:16 PM

The cost must have been estimated by Dr. Evil
"510 MILLION dollars!":grumpycat:

BNF Feb 26, 2014 1:31 AM

That's a big typo. That's twice as much as the Austonian isn't it? Build us a 700 footer with that $510 mil!

STLtoSA Nov 17, 2014 8:40 PM

The old building has been removed and excavation has begun.

I'm happy this building is getting built. Yay for density and nothing beige or brown.
But ick to that drive thru. I had completely forgotten about it until now.

Awesome, another highrise going up in San Antonio.

It's still under construction. End of update.

Piers are set and the crane base has been installed.

It should not be too long until there is another tower crane downtown.

AwesomeSAView Feb 18, 2015 5:26 PM

Yes. I saw that yesterday, while I drove by there. Can't wait for the crane to go up. This will be a very nice looking hotel, even though there has been some controversy about the sidewalk drive thru.

JACKinBeantown May 20, 2015 1:16 AM

Great. Is that crane full height or will it get taller?

From both of these street level shots it does not appear tall enough, but it does not appear to be able to elevate itself (but I am no expert on cranes). It would need to clear at least 100-110' above The Ticket Bar building (to be the final height of the crane), and the cabin of the crane appears to be between 160-190' high; examining the tower sections.

The Maverick is ~130' tall and the Hyatt Regency is ~160' tall, since the crane would have to clear both of those, I think that it is at its final height.

jaga185 May 20, 2015 6:23 PM

I was able to get a photo from the Weston, where I work. It's a bit taller than the Mav building.

Bonus, it's nice to see two cranes in downtown again.

Slowly but surely it's coming along. Thanks for the photos, Raul. I assume it will be just shorter than the crane (which I assume is at full height).

From the rendering it appears to be 10 floors, but then it also seems like there is something going on the roof top as well. In the picture I count 8 floors, but for some reason it looks like its topping off now. We shall see.

co-sign.

gonna be weird to have a "driveway" on houston st. somewhat used to them on side streets for garage entrance/exits.

let's hope new development downtown is a trend and new development with drive-thru lobbies isn't a trend.

It is 10 floors. That second floor is really two; the third floor is set back like a balcony.

JACKinBeantown Jan 22, 2016 5:40 AM

It's noticeably shorter than it appeared in the rendering.

PDG91 Jan 22, 2016 6:56 PM

It almost looks like an addition to the maverick building. There's barely a 1' gap between the 2 buildings.

While this doesn't exactly contribute to the skyline since it's basically just another wall connected to the adjacent building, the density here is really something. I would love to check out some of these smaller hotels sometime and see what the views are like of the street below and of the Riverwalk. I really like the palm trees, too. I'm always jealous of San Antonio's landscaping in downtown.

That's very true. Imagine the street life when the hotel is built and the apts at the maverick are finished.

I like Palms and I know why they plant them, but given our weather I don't understand why anyone plants anything other than a shade tree. I'm pretty sure this area in particular has room with the wider sidewalks

Walked by the site this week and Houston St. in front of the hotel is closed off temporarily. Looks kinda cool with this hotel being constructed and the next door Maverick Apartments being renovated.

Terrific shots. At this scale on downtown's narrow streets, I'd take any number of "street wall" 7-10 story buildings like this over one 800 ft skyscraper isolated by parking lots and retaining walls.
