EDMONTON | Symphony Tower | ~78m | 27 floors

One of the best locations left in the city as it will have river valley views and views of the Alberta Provincial Legislature Building:

U G L Y, its got no alibi it's UGLY! and far to close to the legislative building.
The legislative building is so nice and this, isn't. If they want to build there they should make is a nice Art deco, or gothic style.

and get rid of the anex:tup:

Coldrsx Oct 31, 2007 11:23 PM

personally i like the modern contrast, but still have reservations about the tower as this doesnt give us enough information.

yes, please kill the annex*

Can't tell from the pic, but is that red building part of the base?

cityguy Nov 1, 2007 2:27 AM

I think this is just an early design to show the impact on the neigborhood and site .

probably not...that is a semi-historic apartment with a house attached in which the developers engineering office is in. I do know the last proposal included these in a comprehensive development, but not a base or podium.

I live at The Marquis with a west view, so this building if built would destroy my view...

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/g...ek/view_ba.jpg

This building is still minimum 3 years away. They are still applying for rezoning to increase the allowable density from 500 to 729 units per hectare and a building height from 15 to 29 stories...

Personally I wouldn't mind a 15 story... but 29 seems a bit excessive here...

29 is excessive?

uh-huh...

I'm not sure if that was sarcasm... but...

Yes I think it is a little execessive on the outer reaches of downtown. A good looking downtown IMO has the tallest buildings in the middle and gradually lowers as it spreads out.

But somewhat like the Edmonton ring road we build around the boarder and pull everyone away from the middle. If we build super tall structures around the boarder then downtown starts looking like a fortress (i.e. Stationlands).

At a height of 29 stories I think the ugliest view is from the Legislature grounds.

This has little to do with the view from my building because even at 15 stories it will be blocking my view.

Coldrsx Dec 7, 2007 2:44 AM

i personally still think this building is kinda meh, especially the podium and "townhouses"...

29 floors is fine there, i like that, but it could use some setbacks to reduce the mass of this thing as you go up.

29 storeys will do wonders for Edmonton's skyline. I don't think height should be an issue.

That black glass looks sexy. The stucco looks horribly out of place, although i do like the articulation. Not sure what the fix is.... concrete..??

CanadianCentaur Dec 13, 2007 7:13 PM

I don't mind how the glass part of Wasnea looks. Actually, the most recent two renderings from the open house look good with the black glass. The only problem is that the red base portion looks weirdly out of place with the rest of the tower. I think the red base might be made with brick rather than stucco, but I'm inferring this from the shade of red in the renderings, so I could be wrong.

The Wasnea site appears to be farther down in the river valley and doesn't detract too much from the Provincial Legislature building, so the proposed height shouldn't be an issue. Hell, the ICON towers higher up in downtown will have more floors than that!

Kevin_foster Dec 13, 2007 10:48 PM

Your view isn't ruined, you still will have ample view of the river valley. Just not the LEG.

rapid_business Dec 14, 2007 6:24 AM

Yeah, it looks better in the latest rendition.

The newer rendering looks better. I like the location too, I can't see them having a hard time selling units.

Coldrsx May 2, 2013 8:46 PM

Location and views will be almost unmatched... plus the leg grounds are an incredible area amenity, I live 2 blocks north of this.

Surrealplaces May 3, 2013 6:43 PM

Agreed. This is pretty much a shoe in to get built.
