Just when I start enjoying football games again we have to go and do something stupid like create an event called the Banjo Bowl. Pretty damn weak when you have to take pot shots at another team for no good reason. Makes us look like amateurs. Sorry Saskatchewan.

CCF Aug 29, 2007 6:00 AM

I bet Troy Westwood had a hand in making that.

It's humerous how the Bombers try to play up the Banjo Bowl hype. It is nowhere near as popular as the Labour day game.

It's important to enforce stereotypes and regionalism. Thank you, Friendly Manitoba.

flatlander Aug 29, 2007 2:16 PM

Troy Westwood is an idiot, can't kick his way out of a paper bag, has the last mullet on the continent and once again I'm sorry.

Oh come on guys.... I hardly think a little rivalery beyond the blue team vs the green team is very healthy for football.

Are you suggesting there isn't an underlieing levels of competitive blood flowing from the differences of the city or in saskatchewan's case province.

Are you suggesting Toronto vs Hamilton isn't partially White collar vs blue collar .... and the pokes that go with that.

Or Calgary vs Edmotnon.. which even supercedes the sports relm to just to very different cities ... government capital vs corp centre... among other differences.

I don't think the Banjo bowl is really much compared to those truely intense rivalries, beyond just a game. Sure the Labour Day game in Regina is huge .. and I have been to many... partially due to the fact that 5 - 7 thousand Bomber fans make the trip to Regina which adds a really fun element to the game. The Bombers have done a wonderful job building this followup game .. with marketing and its own level of anticipation.... and its only in its third year. In those years it has been a regular sellout.. not too bad.

As time goes on it will continue to build intensity.

I know the Rider fans don't like it because it pokes fun at the rural lifestyle, but no more than Corner Gas does ... and most saskabushers love that show. It really just a fun amount of ribbing. Get into th spirit.. and enjoy the growing rivalry. Its all good in my books.

I'm a Football nut, especially when it comes to the NFL. though I am a Canadian Football fan none the less.......

By all means, bring on the rivals.... good for the league, good for the teams, good for the cities and good for the fans!

The more rivals the better, makes the game that much more intense and enjoyable to watch! Now only if we can get our ninth team back and add a tenth. That would be sweet!

Are you ready for some good old Canadian Pigskin???

 :notacrook:

Oh Yeah Baby... BRING IT ON!!!!!! :whip:

This weekend it going to ROCK!! I love football .. and labour day marks the start of the home stretch .. where the teams jockey for playoff positions!

This years Labour Day Game (not on labour day) and Banjo Bowl are so much more amazing this year .. because its the two first place teams in the league duking it out. What could be better?

As a Bomber fan if I only went to one game, the Banjo Bowl would probably be it.

I've said it before, but the rivalry and intensity of the crowd makes this game as close as a Canadian can get to the American college experience.

It's just an all around enjoyable time between two cities that are passionate about football.

In my humble opinion both Bomber/Sask games are probably the only games in the CFL worth watching this season.

Troy Westwood made the initial banjo comment before the 2003 Western Semi Final. I remember a couple things about the actual game.

Westwood fired up the Riders. Today, most players try to avoid "bulletin board quotes”, comments in the media that can be used by the opposition team to get fired up, and the coaches usually post them on the bulletin board in the dressing room. I recall a specific play where the Saskatchewan defense either sacked the quarterback or stopped the running back behind the line (I don’t recall the details). The Sask. defenders did an air banjo, foot stomping celebration on the field. Saskatchewan ended up winning the game, eliminating the Bombers from the playoffs.

On a more personal note, I also remember that my cousin, who is from Saskatchewan, played for the Blue Bombers at the time. I wonder what Bomber players thought of Westwood’s comments, especially those who had ties to Saskatchewan or those who knew it would just make the Riders mad and play harder? My cousin ended up getting injured so he didn’t play that game, so I had no reason to cheer for the Bombers. :P

I found this article, outlining the history of the Banjo Bowl after the 2003 Semi Final. Innocently had nothing to do with naming the Banjo Bowl, it was David Asper.

Thats awesome. I wish the Eskimos had the balls to do something like that for the rematch against the Stamps. The Esks stil think it's 1950 though and something like that would ***gasp*** cause controversy and might piss of the geriatrics who spend 20 minutes trying to walk down the aisle to thier seat.

GREAT GAME!!!! ... The Banjo Bowl is another massive success.

The Bombers destroyed the riders :D ... and ther were many Rider fans wearing there watermelon hats crying in there beer.

Its too bad the Bombers didn't compete the final minute of last week's game ... (59 minutes doesn't cut it in a close game) .... but the Big Blue showed everyone who the big dog of the CFL is.

Good luck to the Riders .. hope to see you in the Cup final.

CCF Sep 10, 2007 11:44 PM

So WInnipeg is the big dog despite a 1-1 record against the Riders.

Great math!

bomberguy Sep 10, 2007 11:54 PM

The Riders got OWNED.

Great math!

The Bombers controlled the Riders for 59 minutes in the first game and competely dominated the Riders the whole day the second game.

Really the score complimented the Riders both weeks.... I do agree the Bombers should be ashamed for letting the first one get away, but with that said they did prove beyond the shadow of a doubt they were the better team.

Don't worry though .. I am sure they will fair better against the Stampeders.
