Meh. It’s not going to win any design or creativity awards anytime soon. It kind of reminds me of some mid rise apartment building in Miami.

There’s very little context where it’s going to be. Across the street there’s a very generic ant farm apartment complex. A little further up are some even more generic chain hotels. Sadly, this will be the most unique thing at that important intersection.

King William is right across the street diagonally. Nothing generic there. Hemisfair and it's new buildings will be a block to the east. I actually think Agave looks ok, just wished they used brick all the way around and not just the street facing sides. This building will be right by La Villita also.

It's a start. I recall that the first "new" residential midrises that were built or proposed in Austin within the last 18 years were very "meh". A couple of them, thankfully, didn't happen with the "dot-com bust". Their heights were modest, but that wasn't what bugged me. They were just very, very basic designs. Pretty much just medium height boxes for people to live in. If this is what Austin had gotten in place of say, the Plaza Lofts, I'd still be happy with it today, while for the last 16 years since the Plaza Lofts were built, I've been wishing something would come along to block the view of it. Those were pioneer projects, of course, so it can't be expected that they'd be too daring design-wise since the fact that they were being proposed at all was daring enough. I should dig out some of the renderings I have of those and post them some day.

I'm OK with this building. It's not amazing, but I think it's above average. It looks very mid-20th-century Miami, and I'm good with that. Plus it has the all-important urban ground-level retail with two levels of parking to make the building taller than it would be otherwise. And for those who like the neon look, it has that.

I really love this building. The look of this buildings at night is particularly beautiful! I just wish it was taller. Though, however, it is pretty tall for the area.

On a side note, it is kind of sad that this building is much better than anything going up in the Grand Hyatt side yard.

According to GC, project start is to be August 2018 with expected completion around December 2019 (17 month overall schedule).

Project is out for bid right now.

HDRC approved the project Wednesday afternoon.


In a phone call Thursday, Laney Development Principal Drew Proctor said rent prices had not yet been determined. In a March meeting, however, manager Tim Proctor had said individual unit prices would range from $1,700 per month up to $6,500 per month, making the complex one of the priciest to rent in San Antonio

Too bad they don't have that Handy Andy down the street anymore--it was over between St. Mary's and Presa. Would have been an easy walking distance grocery store for these new residential projects.

Yeah, now people will have to walk all the way to Flores!

When the Durango is built this view will change.

I had high hopes for this becoming a happening little intersection, but then I did a Google search and found that the development on the other side of the street looks finished and has ZERO retail. Sad!

This project went out for bid again with a different GC in the list. A proposed build schedule was also sent out. It had breaking ground as April 2019. :(

Any updates on this?

So far all we know is breaking ground is in like 3 months.

Been awhile...
After this project went out for bid again, it dropped off the radar. I have no idea where it stands now... (although, obviously it's not "standing" yet!)

They just increased the height to 15 floors and 168'.
