Winnipeg - 258 Burnell St - 6 Storey Mixed Use Development

Gonna contribute something useful for a change, since this baby is right down the block from me.

I can’t find any renders for the building yet, but here’s a site plan.

I’ll take progress pics as it goes up. The excavation was mostly done in the fall/early winter. Appears they’re waiting for the water to drain/dry up.

I present to you, the hole.

That's been an empty lot for a while now hasn't it? Looks like a good location for some residential with the Food Fare right on the corner.

It was the old Canada Bread bakery and stables, it’s been down a long road of attempted repurposing, then finally a city tax seizure, then demolished, then a hole in the ground, now finally a bigger, purposeful hole in the ground. All this over the last 11 or so years. Pretty stoked to see movement on this totally underutilized street.

Thistle Curling Club will soon be sold for redevelopment, and hopefully the massive lot across the street also gets some action in my lifetime. If a strip of medium density mixed use buildings go up, it has potential to be a decent streetscape.

Great news, and good scale for that location. Hopefully a rendering pops up sometime soon.

Always have trouble with my squiggles

Good news for the location but even though it's mostly unrelated it is sad to have lost the Thistle Curling Club next door at the same time.

Been a slow go but this week they’ve been back working on removing the perimeter concrete that remained from the original demolition, and I saw carpenters working on the ground fabbing up shoring. Not much worth photographing since last go, will shoot pics when it’s worth it. But she’s moving!

A wild pile-driver appeared in its natural habitat yesterday. Nature is healing. Will take pics before the weekend hopefully.

Thanks postman, I have been out in BC for several weeks and couldn’t get a pic taken before the piles started going in.

WinCitySparky Jun 27, 2023 1:03 AM

Looks like piling is moving along smoothly!

Drove by today, a telehandler aka Zoom Boom is now parked on site, and piles of lumber, formwork, and rebar have also been dropped off. Progress will likely continue after a lull since piles were driven.
