March in Moosomin
I'm currently living at a hotel in Moosomin, SK for work, I'm here for the month of March. These are just a few shots I took last Sunday morning when I went for a walk.
A jeweler in Moosomin? :sly: Hmm, a pub on one side, and a family arcade on the other. I still can't believe how similar this street is to Turner Valley's twin town, Black Diamond It's kind of real boring here, at least Turner Valley has Calgary 25 minutes away, even Regina's an hour and a half from Moosomin. I'm thinking that since I've come this far, I'll drive to Winnipeg when I get off work, Manitoba's the only province I haven't been to outside Atlantic Canada. |
What's the population of Moosomin? about 1,000? What were you expecting? Las Vegas? :P
|
I think it's around 2500 (my Wal-Mart road atlas says 2300, but their stats are usually a few years old, still says Calgary's under 900k). It's pretty much what I was expecting, but does that mean I can't bitch? It does give me an excuse to go to Winnipeg though, and my drive here was the first time being to Medicine Hat, Swift Current, Moose Jaw, and Regina. At least I'm not in a camp, and there's DQ and KFC, everything else closes before I eat except for on pizza place.
|
And nice pics by the way! I never actually seen Moosomin before. I've passed through, but never stopped
What's going on with the windows in this building? http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/2738/p3091236em0.jpg |
I've stopped here for gas, when I lived in Regina and went home to SW Manitoba to visit my folks. It's got my town beat just because it's got the trans-canada running through it.
When I was growing up, I remember Brandon's TV station doing commercials for local businesses in Moosomin, it seemed so exotic being from another province. |
I don't know (about the windows), I'm sure it was close to -30C that morning, or at least it felt like it, so I took the pics and got back in my van. I'll go back and walk around again before I go home, I'll keep that in mind.
Harls- exotic it ain't. But to be honest I don't mind that street, the whole town's pretty much right there, except my hotel of course. The only thing I can actually walk to from here is the Dairy Queen. |
My town never had a Dairy Queen.. that was too exotic. You had to go to North Dakota for that kind of delicacy.
It looks like the main street (I'm assuming it's main street?) is dead. Where is everybody? |
it was shot on a sunday morning lol
|
It was about 9:00 on a very cold Sunday morning, I went back on Monday or Tuesday and there was hardly any parking, I had to park down an alley behind the bank.
|
pfft.. sunday morning all of the farmers should be parked at the local breakfast place at 5 am, minimum :D

And I couldn't believe it wasn't twinned here, 10 frickin hours it was twinned, then boom, I almost drove into the signs in the middle of the road. I was passing a semi at 130, slammed on the brakes and quickly pulled in behind it. Scared the shit out of myself. |
Interesting pics of small-town Saskatchewan. Your typical farming town in the Canadian Prairies.
It sure looks cold - in fact it looks like there's more snow on the ground than even up north in Grande Prairie, where I'm currently at (most streets bare and lots of bare ground showing in areas fully exposed to the sun)! |
It pretty much all melted a day or two after that, I could swim in the streets right now.
|
Nice picts. There's no where quite like a small town on the great plains.
|
The sad part is that downtown is probably healthier than what can be found in most big prairie cities.
I remember how pissed off I was when Selkirk went out of its way to destroy its downtown by courting a Wal-Mart power centre. |
That DQ is the staple of my labour day trips.
|
Yeah I frequent it more than anywhere else, it's closer than the KFC, and the pizza place closes too early.
I just remembered I haven't eaten yet, I actually had work to do tonight, I'm going to check if the DQ's open. |
what line of work are you doing anyways?
|
Field Admin in the seismic industry, I just sit in a hotel room all day doing nothing. Then when the crews come in I get their production, so I'm busy for a couple hours at night and in the morning. Other than that I'm here.
