The first was taken from a small plane in '79 or '80.
The second is from '87 or '88. I think it's from the dirt access road above the arterial, which used to be open to the public.

The third is by Signal of course.

Could someone explain the importance of this ship?? I've heard on the radio that there were people on the waterfront taking pictures of it when it sailed through the narrows. I just don't know what the significance on the ship is.

SignalHillHiker Jan 17, 2013 2:08 PM

It's going to be based in St. John's - so that makes it one of a handful of ships for which we're home, rather than just a port of call. So people are attached to it for that reason.

It's also new, has all the latest technology, and so on so anyone with an interest in ships is especially attracted to this one, it would certainly be the biggest attraction in our harbour.

And then it's just yet another sign of economic progress.

It's not THAT big a deal... but big enough. Just picture it like... a couple on your street buys a brand new, very rare Italian convertible and has it parked outside. All the old men from your street will be over within an hour to have a look, poke it, pretend they know it inside out, chat about it, ask questions about it, etc.

Townie709 Jan 17, 2013 2:14 PM

Oh okay, Thanks for explaining! :)

Is it just me, or does it say "Halifax, NS" on the side?

SignalHillHiker Jan 17, 2013 2:17 PM

Yes, it says Halifax NS. It's owned and operated by Atlantic Towing, a Halifax-based company. St. John's just happens to be its home base.

Yeah, it sailed in the other day directly from a port in Singapore, brand new. It does have Halifax on the side but will service the oil industry here. I also read that staffing it will create somewhere like 40 new jobs as well.

are you ure it belongs to atlantic towing? I was doing some research from my job and Thor Offshore just had a ship built for Atlantic Towing and it just arrived in "St Johns Newbrunswick" haha as the website says and the photo is of a vessel of a different name.

Quote:

On 18 April at 10:00 hours local time M/V THOR SUPPLIER sailed into St Johns, New Brunswick, Canada and was officially handed over to her new owners, Atlantic Towing Ltd.

THOR SUPPLIER's last voyage was from Las Palmas, Canary Islands to her new owners. It was with mixed feelings that we said goodbye to her, she has been with Thor since March 2005 and the largest in our offshore fleet. She was built in Canada in 1975, so it is only fitting she returns there.

Hans Andrias Joensen, CEO and Per Gulklett, marketing director were present to receive her and sign the formal handover.

She is renamed IRVING BIRCH.

We wish Atlantic Towing Ltd all the best and may THOR SUPPLIER/IRVING BIRCH serve them well as she has us.

It's kind of hard to see too because it's a busy picture, a lot of things, but if you look closely you can see that there are quite a few things, and it's just getting started that's why I wanted to start this updating consistently, because imagine when 351 is complete, fortis as well (which will have high impact on this angle) then the Hilton (whatever form she may take) and Deacon as well as the steel hotel and the other building that will get an extension .. oh and the convention centre. So the first one is a good shot of the past when it REALLY started-then stalled- and now in the next few years we will really see a change.

Also I think the snow adds to the visual noise so the summer shots may be more noticeable

Architype Jan 18, 2013 9:51 PM

The major changes between the then and now photos include;
  • removal of the railway

    Construction:
  • The Rooms
  • John Cabot Building
  • Delta Hotel Extension
  • Convention Centre
  • Mile One Centre
  • Quality Hotel Harbourview
  • The Narrows Condos
  • Ft.William Station Condos

    And now the construction of:
  • Fortis
  • 351 Water

Spectacular photos, J! I never realized how mch glass has gone on 351 and how much glass is on fortis place! Both look great! 351 is beginning to look complete from the outside. Thanks for the great update shots :)

Architype Jan 20, 2013 1:51 AM

Thank you!

I love how 351 reflects on itself, it is a really cool effect.
