Yes, "Heavy Lift" going on, Also see some panneling being removed from the East side of the existing centre, mentioned earlier....

They have to tear the existing Convention Centre back to above the snow line in that last pic.

Will that be the entire southern face of the structure?
I was assuming so, but wasn't sure.

Biff Mar 27, 2014 8:12 PM

^^^ Yup.

bomberjet Mar 27, 2014 8:13 PM

In the end you shouldn't notice there are two separate buildings.

ediger Mar 27, 2014 8:43 PM

is anything being done to the exterior of the old building on the other sides to make it look a little more consistent with the new one?

bomberjet Mar 27, 2014 8:58 PM

I was under the impression the new building will match the white exterior of the old. The part going over York is to be the fancy glass and lights part.

dennis Mar 27, 2014 9:56 PM

I was expecting the 3rd level to be one continuous space. There seems to be a stairwell in the centre at the York Ave. Side.

will they be shutting down York?

Cyro Mar 30, 2014 7:53 PM

A little better render to illustrate the bridge between the older structure and new one with York Ave beneath it. Vehicles will use York as a major entrance point to the building(s), both the old and new expansion so traffic will flow beneath it. Nice out of the box concept for Winnipeg. A downtown overpass, who would of thought it possible?

City Room, which will bridge York Avenue and will feature floor to ceiling windows to let in sunlight during the day and the glow of the city in the evenings. The 46,000 sq. ft. space will accommodate 2,800 people for sit-down dinners or 217 tradeshow booths. At street level underneath, York Avenue will serve as an outdoor, weather-protected gathering place.

that's a good question, i'm curious too

I imagine they will during the "bridge overpass" construction because of potential of falling debris directly over moving traffic

but im not sure

thanks for the construction + image updates! its sure looking nice

They will have to shut down York at some point for "bridging" the two buildings into one.

Speaking of bridging together things, any hope of transit service to this new and improved convention centre? Or still tough luck?

What do you mean? Half the buses in the city go up graham--a block away--and many more go up portage, like two or three blocks away.

I know, but its still not *direct* service. It also doesnt help the disabled if they have to struggle for 3 blocks, or through the skywalk system, to get to the Convention Centre, either! You also gotta realize though, theres almost no active entrances facing St. Marys, so people always go up to the one on York.

That's what Handi-Transit is for.

Beat your drum somewhere else.

Wow. What rock have you been living under? Plenty of people with mobility issues ride regular transit. Many buses have ramps and folding seats to accommodate wheelchairs. How is it beating the drum to have questions about how transit serves the CC? I think you need to put your own drum away.
