Paragraph One of the Article:
Quote:

Jaded by glass boxes and architectural imitations of styles gone by? Well this fascinating design by Mark Foster Gage Architects is sure to turn your architectural world upside down. Here’s our first look at their 102-story residential supertower seemingly flown in from some advanced airborne civilization in a galaxy far, far away. While details are scarce, this eagle lands in the heart of Midtown’s Billionaires’ Row along West 57th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues.
While this structure in its present form prolly won't turn out as the final product, the technological capability to design supertall facades of this amazing sort is absolutely feasible in every way.

EDIT: Would a mod kindly help me reformat the title of the thread to all caps, please? It doesn't seem to want to behave when I try. Thx.

Though we are a bit skeptical that Gage’s 41 West 57th design will go forward, the firm’s project page lists its status as “ongoing.” Mark Gage tells us that they must stay mum on the details but the design was commissioned by a developer to see what might be possible in terms of ultra-luxury on that site. The depicted scheme does rise from a legitimate block-through development site comprised of the addresses 41-43 West 57th Street and 50 West 58th Street. The latter address held the home of the national women’s Jewish organization, Hadassah, who sold its building in 2012 for $71.5 million to the mysterious LLC, BOB 57. According to a 2012 Wall Street Journal story, Hadassah can occupy the 60,000 square-foot building for up to three years after the sale date but afterwards the building, along with two others parcels, will be redeveloped into a retail, office, hotel or condominium tower.

Ummmmmmm, it's certainly something.

What ever it is... it's epic. but... a little to much

Randomguy34 Dec 8, 2015 3:52 AM

I have never been so speechless about a skyscraper in my life before

Dale Dec 8, 2015 3:55 AM

wow

munchymunch Dec 8, 2015 3:59 AM

The more I look at it, the more confused I get.

gramsjdg Dec 8, 2015 4:05 AM

Waaaaaaay too much going on with that facade. Kind of a gaudy, garish, German Baroque-ish totem-pole.

Prezrezc Dec 8, 2015 4:10 AM

Well, things do look a bit run-amok to the point at which the fenestration/skin can't be truly appreciated.
If they ratchet the artwork down without making it look borderline banal, we have ourselves a neo-Deco icon a la 111 West. the gold/bronze treatment along the towers surface can stand a bit of being kept in check, too.
I think the architect was described as "Stern meets Gehry".

Randomguy34 Dec 8, 2015 4:13 AM

^ gramsjdg, I'm also starting to notice how this tower has a lot of gears. It looks like they're merging German Baroque with Steampunk, Art Deco, and Futurist. This must be the villain's headquarters in all future movies filmed in New York

So that's the new set up for summoning Gozer the Gozerian?

Gresto Dec 8, 2015 4:32 AM

Ugliest building ever designed.

4thethrill Dec 8, 2015 5:20 AM

Pretty interesting. I'm sure this design is something akin to what clothing designers do for their runway shows; exhibit loud and extravagant concepts to showcase art and creativity. This isn't going to be made but maybe the ideas will be incorporated in the future.

Busy Bee Dec 8, 2015 5:27 AM

What a vulgar lurid rod.

Busy Bee Dec 8, 2015 5:37 AM

Among other things it reminds me of a skyscraper manifestation of that satanic sculpture painting thing behind Al Pacino's desk in the Devils Advocate. Am I wrong?

Yackemflaber69 Dec 8, 2015 6:24 AM

Keep it out of gotham and send it to Dubai where it belongs.

TechTalkGuy Dec 8, 2015 6:43 AM

I wish Donald Trump would have designed this tower, then it all would have made sense.

But as the design appears, it's chaos.
Then I watched the video and couldn't stop smiling the entire time.
Do we need this building?

This is, of course, a mess. It does stir something in me though. I would not mind seeing a return to ornamentation in contemporary design - of course, executed with more tact than this.

Luckily, this project won't be moving forward as reported by curbed. What blew me away though is that the architect seemed to confirm that this was a genuine plan for an actual developer and not a pie in the sky experimental design.
