this will have huge impact on the city and fill some of the largest surface parking lots in the downtown....especially now that we know lakewood is moving ahead with their parking lot fillers as well.

very good investment in the city.

so I take it you've seen it, and you've been impressed by it?

that's a good sign

trueviking Jan 4, 2012 10:10 PM

it still hasnt been awarded but i am generally familiar with what the proposals look like.

roccerfeller Jan 4, 2012 10:56 PM

so with the proposals you've seen, they all look good? (as in it doesn't matter who wins, the outcome will be essentially the same)?

trueviking Jan 5, 2012 7:07 AM

no.

Somewhat related-ish article on how similar arguments are being made to replace the Javits Convention Center in NYC...and how the convention industry ain't what it used to be...

Except that the US isn't Canada. New convention centres and similar facilities are being built across this country. There's obviously a reason.

This is the same argument i have against people saying that no one believes the CMHR will act as a driver for private development. If EVERYONE (and i mean people in business that actually have money to invest in this city) thought that it wasn't a good idea and wasn't going to succeed then why are there so many hotel developments lately. Why is it that when reasons are given as to why these developments are being proposed and built, the same reason comes up - "we feel the WCC and CMHR will be a great driver of hotel stays in Winnipeg". These businesses are investing millions on what they see as a positive. They do business plans and studies and deem their projects to be worthy of proceeding based on research.

There are 5 hotels planned for downtown - Alt, Lakeview (2), new WCC Hotel and the new Waterfront Hotel as well as the Canad Inn HSC (UC). There are 6 new, planned or under construction near the airport - Mainstay Suites on Berry (built), Fairfield Inn & Suites on Ellice (Built), Grand Airport Hotel Winnipeg (UC), Days Inn on Berry (UC), Hampton Inn on Berry (UC) and the Homewood by Hilton on Ellice (planned).

As well as the new planned Canad Inn McPhillips St station all in a market where we keep hearing the hotel sector is saturated. They are building betting on the future and i would bet that these are fairly calculated risks they are taking.

.......anyways, sorry for the long post.

'Obviously a reason' is hardly sound reasoning. If you had a list of say, 10 major conventions Winnipeg has missed out on recently due to lack of size---THAT would be reasons.

jmt18325 Jan 5, 2012 7:26 PM

So why do you see new convention centers popping up across the country? Do you have an explanatn for that?

You're against the expansion of the convention centre?

Biff Jan 5, 2012 7:57 PM

I have seen one of the proposals and it is pretty impressive.

roccerfeller Jan 5, 2012 10:05 PM

would be nice if they revealed several proposals i.e. the finalists for the public to see

I do believe the Convention Centre folks understand how important this development will be to the downtown core, so they aren't going to gimp on it unless it is impossible financially, and they are going to go with the best they can.

frankly, good vibes from biff and viking is good enough for me

1ajs Jan 5, 2012 10:24 PM

yea would be nice to have all this stuff for the archives to dig up in 20yrs lol

The vibe I got from TV is that there are good proposals and bad proposals.

Hopefully a good one is chosen, but at the end of the day this IS Winnipeg, so...

Flavelle103 Jan 6, 2012 2:59 AM

The challenge with convention centres is they are a little bit like arenas or stadiums. When there's something going on, they bring a lot of people to an area. When there isn't, a convention centre is basically a big sprawling dead zone. I'd like to see some media dig up just how busy the WCC actually is now -- and what specific events it thinks it will attract with a bigger centre. I've walked through there a fair bit, both on weekdays and weekends, and often there are just a couple small meeting rooms booked (events are posted on a board).
All of this to say that I hope there is more than just more convention space to this project -- and it sounds like that is the aim.

SmileyBoy Jan 6, 2012 3:13 AM

Oh... My... God.... That was just the GREATEST post I have EVER seen in my life.....

As nice as that would be, I think that would result in a loss of jobs.

1ajs Jan 6, 2012 12:31 PM

not just job loss for them could also cost the company they work for work

chrisallard5454 Jan 6, 2012 12:34 PM

Besides an assurance from Viking that there is potential is good enough for me.

trebor204 Aug 31, 2012 1:39 AM

I heard on CJOB this morning that the parking south of WCC is being closed for site work for expansion of Convention Centre

So it begins.....

chrisallard5454 Sep 2, 2012 1:04 AM

This is just a couple of blocks away from my place so I snapped a pic on the way to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra at The Forks yesterday, which was awesome by the way!

roccerfeller Sep 2, 2012 6:31 PM

Thanks for the update Chris, this sorta came out of nowhere!

chrisallard5454 Sep 2, 2012 6:38 PM

Yes, indeed. Does anyone else find it almost odd that the site is being prepped before a rendering has even been released. Although it is a government tendered project, so it is not like it has to go through city council or anything.

Mininari Sep 2, 2012 6:47 PM

Well, there goes my cheap go-to parking for Jets Games. My friend who works at the convention centre parks there regularly too for work. I guess she'll figure something out.

Heh, GOOD!

Looking forward to seeing the final renderings.
Is this expansion still going to be phased, or if they're just going to 'go for it?'

Really hoping for an all out project, because no offence but we know what happens with phased projects in this city. Maybe Viking or Biff will know the answer to that question, and if not we will find out soon enough.

headhorse Sep 2, 2012 7:10 PM

Do we at least know the architect?

The expansion is not phased. The architect is LM Architects here in Winnipeg. The builder is Stuart Olson Dominion.

1ajs Sep 3, 2012 7:34 AM

o hey the firm that brought us the lybrary expansion kool and looks like they have been doing work at the wcc for a long time so are familiar with it witch is good

That's good to hear. LM certainly has a wide range of architectural design so I look forward to this. They've done some cool stuff, from just browsing through their site

their head offices are really cool

....sorry Vike, no intention to leave Number Ten off. I knew you guys were involved just not officially. This is a very complex deal so i didn't want to jump the gun.

headhorse Sep 4, 2012 2:35 PM

Kind of surprised there was nothing about this in the FP today with the parking lot being closed over the weekend.
