Installing windows yesterday - looks like they do two at a time. They're about half way up.

Work took me to a building across the streets from 222 Second, and maybe it was the cloudy sky, but the skin looks much darker than I realized--by far the blackest of the new towers.

It looks like the strong winds last week tore up the plastic covering.

i'm definitely a proponent of some variation in materials, and the heavily tinted glass here is clearly an effort to emphasis the shingling of the skin (less transparent = more reading of the surface form)........ but this guy is turning out REALLY dark. this and NEMA will probably result in planning reviving the general plan's requirement for "light-colored materials."

There are cool things about this building, but overall I'm underwhelmed. And the massing is weird. I don't get it.

mt_climber13 Feb 4, 2015 6:35 PM

Massing is a result of the planning department.

I like the blackness. SF could use more bold towers.

A box on top of a clunky box, and no, San Francisco doesn't need more dark buildings. NEMA has already become a lighting rid for critics, which is partially deserved. It's also disappointing that the ugly back of One Hawthirne shows to that extent, and the worst portion of it too. We complain about NIMBYs, but do we have to keep giving them such justifiable things about which to complain?

In person, the scaled glass panels do some really cool things with the light, and I think make this building more than just a couple of chunky boxes stacked on top of each other, such that anyone viewing it either up close or from a distance has to appreciate its nuance.

Perhaps a gated community where HOAs dictate pastels and outlaw any variety would be more preferable to you?

It looks like the same color as 101 California to me, and I don't hear any complaints from skyscraper fans about that one.

Also 555 California is very dark and was very hated because of it but it does make a nice contrast.

fflint Feb 16, 2015 4:35 AM

I don't think NIMBYs even notice this mid-level highrise.

Personally, I've seen this tower in person and I don't care for the darkness, but they didn't skimp on the materials. This tower is slick.

a very long weekend Feb 16, 2015 6:14 AM

yeah, it's an amazing tower up close, and it really does a fantastic job as a contrapunkt/transition from almost perfectly preserved old fidi second street to keycard new fidi second street. not to mention what it does for howard. it's probably my favorite new office building along with 535 mission, at a period in the city's history when we're getting a lot of stuff of very high quality.

> The Planning Commish will take care of that--whatever maintains people's love for this greatly admired and popular city is fine with me. We'll leave pastel HOAs to the far eastern and Sacramento suburbs. ;)

> Huh?? 101 California is gold!

Also 555 California is very dark and was very hated because of it but it does make a nice contrast.

As you know, I love 555 California and its rich Carnelian Granite.

Add 350 Mission to the high quality list! In the meantime, I'll get downtown to look at 222 up close; I'm sure you guys are right since I put a lot of credibility into the opinions coming from most of you.

mt_climber13 Feb 16, 2015 6:33 PM

^and Michigan right?? :)

Sacramento is incredibly boring for development, why do you think I hang out here so much?? The place of my roots :)

LinkedIn should change its logo to match this tower, just like Transamerica did in the 70s. I see an L and an I in there somewhere.

OK wakamesalad, the blackness looks good when viewed looking south on Second Street. :)
