They’ve built it – but in a way, the Assiniboine Park Zoo hopes the polar bear cubs don’t come.

On Monday, the zoo officially opened its brand-new International Polar Bear Conservation Centre, the first attraction in what will become the sprawling Journey to Churchill exhibit, which is currently under construction.

The facility will serve as a rehabilitation centre for orphaned polar bear cubs. The centre is ready and willing to accept as many as a dozen cubs in brand-new, state-of-the-art enclosures, though it’s unlikely it will house that many.

There’s no way of knowing when an orphaned cub will be found – and from a conservation perspective, zookeepers hope it’s a rare occurrence.

"We really hope we don’t see any orphaned polar bear cubs, but realistically, it’s going to happen," said Zoo zoological director Tim Sinclair-Smith. "We could get one next week, we may not see anything until next year."

The conservation centre also features an interpretive centre filled with interactive videos exploring the impact of climate change on polar bear habitats and kid-friendly games.

Its tall windows will eventually look out over the rest of the Journey to Churchill exhibit, which will feature polar bears, arctic foxes, musk oxen and other animals native to northern Manitoba.

I don't have any info on when it will be done, but the scope of this project is HUGE. I went there on the Louis Riel long weekend and the footprint of the building is crazy big.

Journey to Churchill opens in 2014. Hudson the polar bear made his debut a couple weeks ago. Currently the only polar bear at the zoo after Debbie (the world's oldest polar bear) passed away a few years back.

Hudson is currently living in the International Polar Bear Conservation Centre until the full exhibit opens. From what I've seen and heard, this will be an absolutely amazing place!

This IS truly going to be a 'park gem' like the Vancouver Aquarium is to Stanley Park, and they're charging $25/adult for admission there. There are lots of educational programs in the works, and it will make for a very nice field trip for schools.

I know. This does tend to reflect poorly on Winnipeg and it's citizens. There have been numerous mistakes in Winnipeg threads, I've notice. Yes, we all make mistakes once in a while, but to consistently have poorly written out thread titles should not be acceptable.

How hard is it to fix?

Winnipeggers can hop on down to the Assiniboine Park Zoo to check out the residents of the latest permanent seasonal exhibit.

The Australian Walkabout Exhibit features 14 female red kangaroos plus their young, as well as four emus.

The new exhibit features a large, open-concept enclosure just inside the zoo entrance that allows visitors to enter and walk around with the animals.

The new Australian Walkabout Exhibit at the zoo will feature red kangaroos and emus in an enclosure that visitors can enter.

Red kangaroos are the largest of the species and the largest mammal native to Australia, said zoo officials. Emus are also native to Australia and they are the second-largest bird in the world by height, after their relative the ostrich.

Zookeeper talks, presentations and animal feeding sessions will happen daily. They are free with regular zoo admission. The zoo is opendaily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Love this new exhibit, even though it's seasonal. Kanga Rules, Walkabout, face to face with a few roo's. It's too bad Sinclair is going back home "down under", he was a great director.

Does a "permanent seasonal exhibit" mean that it will be around next summer as well?

That is how I interpret it. Similar to seasonal flights to Phoenix; they are only around for x months, but they come back every year.

I think the issue is that Kangaroos and Emu's are not suited for our winters and are housed indoors in the winter months - thus seasonal.
