chicago skyline shots from the other side of lake michigan are always fun.

you need really clear air and a pretty powerful telephoto lens to fully capture the effect.

and a bit of elevation gain from the numerous large sand dunes over there also helps.

i'm quite fond of this one:

Amazing photo but quite old at this point. Everything from the past 15 years is missing. That view would be much more dramatic today and even more so in 5 years when all the south loop projects are completed. The skyline will essentially extend to the left edge of the photo.

Steely Dan Aug 15, 2017 8:57 PM

^ i realize the pic is quite outdated, but it's the best "across the lake" skyline shot i've ever seen, so i had to post it.

This was taken near the Tennessee state line, about 85 miles / 137 kilometres west-northwest from downtown Winston-Salem. It is the longest distance photograph I have of the Winston-Salem's skyline.

Nice shot! Where is that? Hanging Rock? Pilot Mountain?

Matthew Aug 16, 2017 2:25 PM

It's from much further out than that. It's from western Ashe County. The distance was so impressive, it was in a news story, several years ago. You can see layers of mountains increasing in height. From what I've seen, you need a very clear day, the sun likely has to be on the other side of the skyline (notice most of these are just shadows from the back of the skyscrapers with a rising or setting sun behind them), and you need an amazing lens.

Winston-Salem:
View from Fancy Gap, Virginia, taken by SSP/SSC forum member Flash. I found this on SSC, if I remember correctly? It's clear enough to identify the individual buildings. It's 46 miles / 75 kilometres.

http://i.imgur.com/2DRd45I.jpg

Has anyone tried to photograph Winston-Salem from West Virginia? The photograph above is about half-way to West Virginia. Something that surprises me: The Hawthorne Hill Skyline in Winston-Salem never shows-up in distance views? It should be to the right of downtown in the skyline view above. It must be hidden in a valley, behind the tall ridges in the city?

Here you go... skylines as viewed from Mars.

And Mars is typically 141 million miles away. Meanwhile, the diameter, and note the diameter of the universe (not including volume) is 5.5×10^23 miles.

Point being, we are nothing really. For some deep analysis, check out or type "drake equation".

That's a excellent shot. I remember taking a cruise out of Fort Lauderdale 3 years ago, and for a good two hours or so, traveling down the peninsula, it was a silhouette of towers in the horizon. Usually I'll take them out of Bayonne (been on 17 cruises in my life), but F.Lauderdale offers some nice skyline gazing opportunities when headed to the Caribbean. S.Florida's coast is one giant skyline. Probably the longest in the nation in terms of sheer mileage.

Although taking it out of Bayonne, going underneath the Verrazano is epic.

I am thinking and thinking about this and I believe.... She might be slightly correct. If skyscrapers were about 62 miles high and reached suborbital space then from the ground a skyscraper might appear to be curved as it got closer and closer to the top.

Anyways, the 40+ mile shots are what I'd be really interested in. The shore of St Catharines and Niagara on the Lake are about 31 miles from Toronto, and it looks like you should definitely be able to see Toronto from quite a bit further if you can get to a high enough elevation because you see Toronto quite well from those locations. You see it even better from a greater distance atop the Niagara escarpment in St Catharines and Hamilton which is about 37 miles.

Niagara Falls would be 42 miles, I haven't been up the towers there but I'd imagine you should be able to see Toronto from there reasonably well still considering you can see Niagara Falls from Oakville (39 miles) despite the Niagara Falls buildings being much shorter than Toronto's. You can even see Niagara Falls from pretty much lake level in Oakville, so if you can get to the top of the towers in NF which are on top of the escarpment (so maybe 800 ft above the lake) the Earth's curvature won't get in the way nearly as much as looking at NF from Oakville's waterfront.

Looking from some of the high-rises in Buffalo or K-W would be really cool, that would be over 50 miles. At that distance the sub-skylines of the Golden Horseshoe would stack so that they would appear like a continuous skyline from Scarborough to Mississauga (you already have that effect from St Catharines).

The Chicago Skyline, Seen From Michigan (!), Thanks To An Incredible Mirage

http://chicagoist.com/2017/04/20/pho...ne_as_seen.php

Quote:

.....

- The scientific name for the phenomenon is superior mirage. It's also known colloquially as fata morgana—all helpful information since the stunning effect pretty much left us grasping for words. --- How does it happen? It's all about the interaction of cold and warm temperatures and the density of the atmosphere. When we see weather conditions featuring extremely clear/dry air, and a temperature inversion caused by warm air higher above cold air closer to the surface of the lake, this situation creates the mirage of seeing a 'skyline...'
