Dubai: Another Megatall Proposal | PROPOSED

There seems to be a competition underway for a new megatall tower to be built in DIFC (which is between the emirates towers and burj dubai). The first proposal was found a few weeks ago and is designed by Norr International who also did the emirates towers. Judge the height yourself :)

This second one is by Atkins. It's basically a WTF were they thinking type of thing. It looks seriously ill with spots, a bit of blood splattered here and there and a big massive tumor sticking out the side. Keep in mind they've designed loads of great towers like the burj al arab and the WTC in Bahrain which is one of my favourite towers anywhere so they're not bad architects. Why the hell would they propose something like this? :weird:

Altin said there were more proposals on display.

BTW I don't really like the first one either. It's a great tower but is too big and dwarfs all the others including rose rotana and all of those which are in that area.

The first one looks like a typical Dubai building and wouldn't look too out of place.

But that second one is just freaky looking. :sly:

Ya wtf is up with that second design? I like the first one a lot, however.

The first is pretty cool.

While surfing for BD stuff, I read a lengthy article about Dubai's proposals scheduled for the next 10 years that included this, but they mentioned that it won't go up. Besides, it looks way out of place next to the ET.

IMO, they should have built it in place of the Dubai Mall tower. I think it would have complimented the BD and the BD Lake Tower well with some height around the WTB.

and what will occupy this building again? air?

Do you have a link? I'm interested in reading it :)

The second design looks like it's made by and for aliens.

bobdreamz Dec 10, 2006 5:47 PM

the first pic is actually very impressive but the second looks like pretzel sticks!

Bergenser Dec 10, 2006 8:45 PM

I vote for the first!

Organic vs Post-Modern ?
If only the organic design wasn't so radical... I mean, it would be easy to turn it into something nice.

malec Dec 10, 2006 10:16 PM

Strange that the 2nd proposal was designed by the same guys that did beauties like the burj al arab and bahrain wtc. Looks like they were taking the piss out of this competition or something :)

NYguy Dec 11, 2006 1:49 PM

It would be too bad if that one doesn't get built. That's one design where the super-spire is justified, though it looks to be half the height of the tower itself.

SLKRR Dec 11, 2006 2:45 PM

I agree that the second one is hideous. It makes the new twizzler version of the Chicago Spire look breathtaking. First one is pretty nice, however.

BANKofMANHATTAN Dec 11, 2006 2:59 PM

The first one looks decent & like any other Dubai megatall, the second one is a joke, i hope. It looks like an alien womb. :sly:

I agree with the tumor comment for the second design. If you're going to design an organic building, then you have to follow the laws of organisms. So when a building bulges and curves, it looks muscular and not fat.
And if you design an organic building that looks like it has diseases and cancer, no one is going to want to live in it.

I read an article once about plans for a long term nuclear storage area, that would be toxic for thousands of years. They wanted warning signs that would span all languages and cultures, something that would still say "Stay the hell out!" 5000 years from now. One of the designs was similar to this. An organic structure that twisted and bulged, looking obviously sick.
Cancerous buildings are a bad idea.

i actually like the first design and i think it's blend well with the Emirates (especially) and the rest of Dubai. the second one looks like something out of some horrible 70's sci fi B film. please, make it stop!!!!

rbowk Dec 12, 2006 9:29 AM

i like the first design

gixer Dec 12, 2006 3:26 PM

Yep, the first one looks good. Would be interesting to see that between Emirates Towers and Burj Dubai. The second one is awful...:hell:
