Found a site for a new apartment building downtown. I know the foundation is in, and I guess it will be completed some time this year.

^^ Very nice! more than a few of us are aware that Ithaca isn't chopped liver....there's plenty there...I've always liked the tone and atmosphere of smaller cities with strong academic plants such as Ithaca (Cornell/ Ithaca Coll.) or smaller towns like Leisburg, PA (Bucknell) or Bloomsburg, etc.

Ex-Ithacan Jun 16, 2006 2:24 PM

Yeah dony, though I've got blue collar roots, I've still been heavily influenced by the academia atmosphere of Ithaca. Good place to grow up. Thanks.

I second that, realizing that while I may have grown up in the white trash part of the Ithaca area, having Cornell around let me see that there was a way out of the greater Caroline area.

Born to be Wild (at least in Ithaca;) )

Since I haven't posted anything here for a bit, I thought I'd share a pic from the net. This is the gorge at Treman State Park (Enfield Glen) a few mile outside of Ithaca. If you notice the walkway on the left, there's some people a ways along the walkway.

Those wacky Ithacans strike again. Here's a major news article in the local paper, while crime is still alive and well in my brother's hood. :koko:

Well, where to begin...

Ex-Ithacan (and whit x), I want to say thanks to the two of you for keeping the outside world informed about a great community. I have been lurking...nine months now, I believe, and I have read each and every update to the Ithaca thread. I did my own research, and when I weighed in my choices for college, this thread showed me that Ithaca was still a developing community, and helped to give it an edge over Geneseo and Princeton, NJ. I will be attending CU in the fall, and in a way, this thread's suggestion of a positive upstate New York city helped me a little in my decision. So, take pride; this thread has actually helped to make a difference in somebody's life.

Oh, and if it gets REALLY awful for some reason, there's still Geneseo and Princeton;) .

Ex-Ithacan Jul 8, 2006 3:33 PM

Thanks so much for the compliment, but I think the city itself (and obviously the school) are what really sold you. I'm just a messenger. Nice to see an upstater stick it out. I've often felt guilty that I left the region.

Hope all goes well for you at Cornell. Look forward to some threads of your own once you get settled. Good luck & thanks.

whit_x Jul 8, 2006 5:10 PM

As much as I like Ithaca and still consider it home, choices 2 & 3 aren't too bad either. While I have never been to Princeton, I have many foggy memories of crawling back down the hill in Geneseo to my Friend's apartment/dorm from the bars or the strip on Main St after going to a house party. Plus the academics at both places are pretty good as well, part of the reason I left in the first place (couldn't get into Cornell, nor afford either school).

Ex-Ithacan Jul 12, 2006 11:30 AM

Not much going on lately. The city did finally get 2 bids to refurbish one of the older parking garages.

oh well.

While downtown has been where much of the new development has been going on, and the southwest area has seen several new projects as well, my old hood of Collegetown has been somewhat forgotten as of late. Many of the merchants are now questioning the timing of repairs to the public garage in Collegetown. Here's an short article about the issue:

Here's a pic of the hood (the garage is visible to the bottom left)

whit_x Jul 16, 2006 3:34 PM

I agree with them that the repairs should have been done a couple of months ago, instead of waiting unitl August to start on them. Besides, the amount it would cost to put together enough lots to do a project combined with the height restrictions keeps projects from being done in C-Town, since you can't get a decent return without a huge lot.
