New permit issued for a 1-story convenience store at the empty lot at the southwest corner of Damen Fullerton; across from drive thru popeyes and kiddie corner from the new drive thru restaurants going in at Damen/Elston.

A small part of me is happy to see anything going in since these empty lots are so depressing to look at every morning. Although... gross.

Just walked past 1111 West Winona which is currently being torn down. Anyone know if something is proposed here? Or maybe the site will be used as a staging area for the upcoming CTA modernization of the red/purple line? I walked past here on Saturday morning and the building was still there, so the demolition presumably just started today.

It doesn't show up on CTA's affected properties map, but this demolition may be to build a temporary Argyle station platform. It will have two side platforms instead of one center platform, and the Foster bus will be re-routed to this temporary station (since Berwyn will be closed).

A CTA map seems to indicate that the southbound temporary platform will be somewhere north of Argyle - could be this site on Winona - while the northbound platform will be near the existing platform (or IS the existing platform):

These temporary platforms are usually wood-framed, it's kind of interesting. Looks like something you'd see at an amusement park.

^ I am pretty sure there's a few new buildings proposed for those lots on Broadway but it's completely slipping my mind.

In other news, there is a new 3800 capacity music venue with full service restaurant opening at 640 W Cermak opening in February or early March 2020. It looks like they've already booked some semi big or big names - Dillon Francis, Carl Cox, Lil Wayne, Killswitch Engage, Alkaline Trio, and Bad Religion. Why am I posting about this? It's right across the Cermak bridge from that huge warehouse being renovated by Chinese developers for a new 200 room hotel with a handful of restaurants, huge Chinese grocery store, huge spa, etc. Also, another Chinese developer is planning on a vacant lot just a block or so north of this to build 7 or 8 new buildings with over 200 new residential units and over 100K sq ft of retail space. That same developer already renovated part of a warehouse across from that vacant lot for a new Chinese mall.

Could this little area suddently pop up seemingly overnight? And speaking of Chinatown - does anyone know whether the new Chinatown hotel on Wentworth started construction yet? They got a building permit for it a few months ago.

I think that is the next phase of Cedar St. Development. Look at this old story from Curbed. The new build goes up to the tracks.

It's not that. 5050 N Broadway is on the west side of Broadway. 1111 W Winona abuts the east side of Broadway. 5050 N Broadway is The Draper which is newly opened (I have a friend who lives in it and says it's awesome). Remember, that building was a renovation of an existing building on the west side of the street.

I know. Keep reading the story and see picture at end.

“The second phase of Cedar Street’s plan calls for the construction of two new seven-story buildings across the street at 5083 and 5063 N. Broadway. In total, the combined multi-building development will deliver 710 apartments units and 45,000 square feet of commercial space. It will utilize the existing 600-car parking garage at nearby 5051 N. Broadway.”

Oops. Second phase. You're right. I remember it was 2 new buildings like that. Could this signal it starting soon?

Anyone see that absolutely enormous yellow crane in this area today? Saw it from the Green Line just north of I-55. I'll try to snap a pic tomorrow, but I couldn't tell what it was for. I've never seen a crane quite like it before.

Looks like you may have solved the question. From that image, it appears the style of the new development on the east side of Broadway will resemble the redevelopment of 5050.

Where on Wentworth? I don't see anything on your permit map.

Just checked and its definitely on my map. It's a white diamond on the map at 2353 S Wentworth. It's supposed to be an extension of the existing building there in back of it and/or on top of the back section of the building.

The permit was issued just over 2 months ago. Here's a story on it from last summer. It's supposed to have 168 rooms. I have yet to find a rendering for it.

State Street apartment plan derailed over security concerns at nearby courthouse
https://chicago.curbed.com/2019/12/1...ntury-building

Quote:

Concerns over a proposed rooftop deck that would have direct sightlines into the adjacent courthouse caused the city of Chicago to withdraw an earlier agreement to buy the buildings from the federal government’s General Services Administration (GSA) and transfer ownership to local real estate firm CA Ventures, according to the Chicago Tribune.
This makes no sense at all. It's the loop. Buildings and rooftops can see into other buildings. If the courthouse is concerned, they should put up curtains.
Or just get rid of the rooftop deck, that can't be a deal breaker.

These buildings are abandoned. They will deteriorate and have to come down if they aren't occupied.

The one in an existing warehouse is from Skyriver who is doing other things. A sizable Asian grocery store chain from NYC bought minority stake in them. Some of the Chinese restaurants in this development are well known in NYC. Also the big grocery store going into this building is from the same company that bought a minority stake.

There were a lot of security concerns / sightlines stipulated in the RFP IIRC. Surprising that it's coming up now. Hopefully these buildings are still rehabbed.
