This is beautiful. If this is the design, I had that the rest of it is this good too.

Gary Barnett’s Extell Development has spent $62.5 million to purchase 572 Fifth Avenue in what appears to be part of the firm’s assemblage play in the Diamond District.

The company bought the office building from Braha Industries, according to property records. It stands six stories tall and spans about 12,000 square feet.

Extell and Braha did not respond to requests for comment.

Barnett, who previously worked in the diamond industry, has been planning a secretive development in the area for years that was just revealed in November to be a hotel with several hundred rooms. The firm closed on the four-story building at 32 West 48th Street for $40 million that month and also bought several neighboring buildings and air rights for a total of $85 million.

Construction on the hotel should start in about five months. The project will link West 48th Street to the diamond block on West 47th Street.

A great opportunity was missed by restraining the International Gem Tower to a 500' box.

Extell needs to man up a bit this time.

Activity spotted at Extell’s Fifth Avenue demolition zone

Did we detect a small sign of life at Gary Barnett and Extell’s huge assemblage on the northwest corner of Fifth Avenue and West 46th Street that’s still waiting for its marching orders?

Extell’s site includes the corner lot at 570 Fifth Ave. (now demolished), two small adjacent buildings at 572 and 574 Fifth, and vacant land running west along the north side of 46th Street where several other buildings were demolished.

When we saw workmen moving debris around on Monday, we found only a January filing with the Department of Buildings to “install fence as per plans … to secure vacant lot, along with adjacent vacant properties.”

We couldn’t reach Barnett by press time.

Extell owns land up and down the west side of Fifth Avenue from West 45th to West 48th Street. We previously reported on tentative plans for the properties between 45th and 46th streets and between West 47th and 48th.

This stretch of Fifth is the utter Achilles Heel of the avenue. I hope that Extell builds something special which will precipitate the transformation.

There's enough room to activate something special at ground level.

Too bad we couldn't get a full block demo here.

I like the building on the corner of 47th. I'm glad that it's staying.

Looks like equipment on-site and some mild activity.

So what's the status here? There is no reason this one can't be saved, they have plenty of room to build what they want without hauling this beautiful little edifice to the landfill.

chris08876 Jun 22, 2019 3:41 AM

Fortunately its still here (can be seen on the right of the current site). Although I think that is still on the bucket list and isn't under the umbrella of the landmarks commission or landmark protection.

Hopefully its saved, but won't be guaranteed.

GIVEN the scaffolding though... in front of it per the current pic update, I think its going to bite the dust soon. :(

It’s odd that we have no clue as to what will rise here.

The guy holding the bag closest to the camera in post #74 has that face. He's probally just spotted a Tower 5th rendering, and is utterly disgusted.

I don't think Extell has even decided, or at least they are playing it that way.
