I may have missed them if there are any plans, but what if anything is going on with the beautiful old Parisian and Pizitz/McRae's buildings?

TimCity2000 Sep 29, 2013 1:09 AM

^the old pizitz building downtown (across from mcwane center) is currently undergoing renovation and will become lofts/apartments. is that one of the buildings you're referring to? (it's on 2nd ave north & 19th st if that helps...)

not sure where/what the old parisian/mcrae's is..

Pizitz/McRae's was the same Dept. Store, McRae's took over in later years. Thanks for the good news!

Parisian's old flagship store was on the NW corner of 20th St. & Second Ave. North (I think!).

SpawnOfVulcan Sep 29, 2013 4:42 AM

I think the confusion comes from the fact that a former Parisian department store building (Booker T. Washington Insurance building - 3rd/18th N) is being renovated into "The Parisian" while the Pizitz Building (19th/2nd N) is also going to be renovated.

Both of those buildings are going to be largely (80-90%) developed into lofts/apartments.

TimCity2000 Sep 29, 2013 5:08 AM

is this the building? it used to have a yogurt shop on the first floor. sounds like it will be turned into a bar (but will keep the "paramount" name). partnership between the guys that did trattoria (across the street) and el barrio (couple blocks away). not sure what's on the top 2 floors.

Hey TimCity, did you take those pictures of the Lyric (and other buildings) on the previous page? I just wanted to be sure so that I could use those pictures in the master list and credit them as yours.

SpawnOfVulcan Sep 30, 2013 4:04 AM

Master list has been updated with info about LIV Parkside and the VA Clinic. As always, the most recent stuff is colored in RED.

atlantaguy Sep 30, 2013 4:27 AM

Thanks, guys - I think that clears it up. I'm going by what older friends from Birmingham are telling me, along with the very cool book "Birmingham, Then and Now."

I was a bit confused.

update on tj tower project... final design won't be available until january:

Plans for TJ Tower call for 100 units, retail space

*edit*

100 units seems kinda low....

Maybe they are removing some of the floors so people can have 20ft ceilings in there.

SpawnOfVulcan Oct 2, 2013 1:40 AM

Maybe they're going to, like, make a few floors single floor condos with lower ones divided? Or maybe they're going to make it more mixed use than they'd made it seem so far.

EDIT: Oh, and Tim, I am most definitely a dude.

It could be (hoping they are) family-oriented condos: multiple floor units, 3 and 4 bedroom units. If and when the YPs moving to Downtown have children, the City will need some kind of development to keep them in the City, rather than have them leave for the suburbs.

Having the right students can completely change the perception of Birmingham schools.

found some renderings for the lane parke development in mountain brook, in case you want to add them. these are for the grand bohemian hotel, a $130 million piece of that project:

hmm... those images don't appear to be working for some reason. not sure what i did wrong...

This is extremely cool for Birmingham! These hotels are amazing, and the ones in Savannah and Orlando became instant landmarks.

The designs for the development in Lane Park are really nice, they fit in great.

TimCity2000 Oct 12, 2013 2:41 PM

looks like work has begun on the rotary trail.

for those not familiar with the project, it will transform an old sunken railroad bed into a new landscaped park and walking trail... ultimately connecting railroad park with sloss furnace:

Really glad to hear that it's starting. It should be a really cool corridor when it's complete.

TimCity2000 Oct 12, 2013 8:22 PM

^agreed!

for those interested (maybe i posted this before...), here's the ultimate master plan:

i love how ambitious it is.
