I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I don't think this is rust. I think it is a reflection of the late afternoon (almost setting) sun. The color in the other buildings is more subtle but look at the color of the shadows beneath the balconies immediately below the crown. It is the exact same tone. The mesh is a heavy woven stainless steel. It is quite reflective and if it were rusting, it would not be an even tone like this. You might see some rust at the end of the strands, but not all over like this and so evenly distributed.

Two years ago it was much more white than brown though. The pillars have stayed white while the mesh has turned brown.

Stainless steel is corrosion resistant depending on the grade of steel.

I wonder if the parking garage has the same hue as the crown? Maybe it is setting sun as H2O noted.

The idea is the crown would have been glass instead of wire, mesh, or whatever is up there currently.

I made the lower portion the same blue (looks green in this photo to me) as the glass in the rest of the building, and then a white glass up top.

Of course all white, or something else may look better, but I was trying to be a tad creative without anything too wild.

Can you plz add another strip of glass at the top where the poles are sticking up and then add more horizontal bands to continue the look of the floor plates going up? :D

I thought part of the reason it couldn’t be solid is that they had agreements to put communication equipment up there. But I don’t see any such equipment.

I watched the Impossible Eng episode featuring this building and if I recall, they wanted wind to be able to pass through without adding to any sway.

Yay for the Violet Crown! It does kinda have that look with the unfinished top pillars

Let's hope they keep it on

Funny, but when I first looked at the purple crown, to me it looks like there are shadows of people across that area.

They had to wait for new circuits or something like that to come in.

One of my friends mentioned to me recently that she had heard there were structural issues discovered with the Independent. I hadn't heard anything about that - has anyone on here?

Um waaaaat?? No chatter on here at all. I sure hope not....that tower wouldn't be well positioned to lean.

the Genral Apr 7, 2022 4:02 PM

Let's just hope that if there's any structural issues, it's with the parking podium cladding.
