Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed Talal said he is looking at the world's largest cities, including Shanghai, Moscow, London and New York, as possible locations to build a mile-high skyscraper that would be the world's tallest building by far.

The prince is inviting Dubai's biggest real estate developer Emaar Properties, chaired by Mohammed Alabbar, to team up with his investment firm Kingdom Holding on the project.

“Right now we are discussing and evaluating the possibility of building a one-mile (1.6km) tower,” Alwaleed told Reuters by telephone late on Monday.

“We also need good partners. I invite Emaar and Mr Alabbar to join forces with us and see how we can build the ultimate one-mile tower somewhere in the world.” Alwaleed did not say how the project would be financed if it went ahead, or when it might be completed.

He said the cost had yet to be decided. But his ambition reflects the growing confidence of many Gulf companies as they expand overseas, aided by booming economies and rising asset prices in their home countries. “I am now inviting the major cities of the world like Shanghai, Moscow, New York, London and regional cities in the Middle East to come and give their offers,” Alwaleed said.

He said countries interested in hosting the world's tallest tower would have to offer attractive financing terms, tax breaks and other government support.

Alabbar could not immediately be reached for comment. Over the past year, Emaar has committed itself to several other huge projects in Dubai and nearby countries. Industry experts have said building a one-mile skyscraper would involve technical and design challenges, such as how to supply water economically at that height, but would not be impossible.

If it is built, the mile-high tower would surpass the world's current tallest skyscraper, the 828m Burj Khalifa in Dubai, as well as the one-km-high Kingdom Tower now being built by Kingdom Holding in the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah. The Kingdom Tower is expected to cost around 4.6 billion Saudi riyals (US$1.2bil) and will form part of a hotel, retail and luxury residential project.

Ariel Walker is the assistant to the city manager for intergovernmental affairs for the City of Dayton. Originally from Pittsburgh, she studied at the University of Dayton and stayed in Dayton after she graduated. LISA POWELL / STAFF

A brightening economy and better job prospects may be helping the Dayton region stem the loss of young adults, and the much-dreaded brain drain.

The region has finally seen the end of a decades-long trend of losing young adults, and for the first time, beginning in 2010, the area saw gains in its population of 20 to 34 year olds, according to a Dayton Daily News analysis of new Census population estimates for 2012.

...

Pittsburgh native Ariel Walker said when she finished her master’s degree at the University of Dayton in 2006, “pretty much everyone had the mindset that if you found a job you were one of the lucky ones” regardless of whether it was in Ohio or elsewhere.

Walker landed a job quickly with Wright State University’s Center for Urban and Public Affairs through the network of contacts she built through UD’s Fitz Center for Leadership in Community. Today, she works for the city of Dayton as assistant to the city manager for intergovernmental affairs.

“Dayton is a great town to live in,” Walker said, with “all of the amenities of a larger city with the feel of a smaller community. Pretty much everything I was looking for to start my family and my life was here.”

Yesterday was the big reveal for the first 200million dollar phase of a new park along River Parks (an already wonderful park that runs from downtown to the southern edge of the city).

http://www.newson6.com/story/2262755...iverside-drive

http://agatheringplacefortulsa.com/

The gift is from the George Kaiser Foundation that gives to many different causes in Tulsa ( this along with the Tulsa Community Foundation, purportedly donates to Tulsa an amount equal to the entire city budget each year).

Kaiser has already donated millions to refurbishing the trails along Riverside and just finished a fantastic new park downtown called Guthrie Green. Which I would guess now brings his donations to Tulsa's parks alone to easily over $300 million to 400million dollars with more to come.

http://www.guthriegreen.com/

Here is another park and living project the Kaiser Family Foundation is involved with in another part of Tulsa.

Maybe some of you could be kind enough help out a slightly confused student on his 200th post... How seriously is the namesake of this thread is taken by the development community in Vancouver? Presently I am entering the 2nd year of a BA program at UBC with an intent to specialize in Economics. The diploma would allow me to take all the same specialized courses (but via distance-education) as a BCom in Urban Land Economics, while allowing me to remain in Arts as preferred.

However, if the diploma is not well-regarded and would not help create opportunities in the field of real estate development (in concert with a BA in Economics), I would need to consider directing my efforts elsewhere. Any insights/experiences/advice on the topic would be graciously appreciated.

New skyscraper technology allows lifts to reach over 1 km

A new elevator has been designed to reach 1,000m or higher in a single trip – double the previous limit.

Engineering company KONE has announced the "UltraRope" – a completely new hoisting method that eliminates the disadvantages of conventional steel rope. This new elevator technology is set to break industry limits and enable future travel heights of 1,000m (3,280 ft), twice the distance currently feasible. It opens up a world of possibilities in high-rise building design, an important consideration as urbanisation brings increasing numbers of people to cities.

The Burj Khalifa, currently the world's tallest building at 830m (2,722 ft), requires passengers to switch lifts to go above the 500m mark. But lifts in the next generation of supertall towers – such as Jeddah's Kingdom Tower – could use this new technology to zoom to the top in one go.

Antony Wood, of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat in Chicago: "UltraRope is one of the biggest breakthroughs since the advent of the [Otis] safety elevator 150 years ago. The biggest limiting factor in building higher until now has been the steel rope weight – and we have reached the limit of that technology at 500 metres."

Comprised of a carbon fiber core and unique high-friction coating, the UltraRope is extremely light, meaning that elevator energy consumption is cut by 11 per cent. The drop in rope weight means a dramatic reduction in moving masses – everything that moves when an elevator travels up or down, including the hoisting ropes, compensating ropes, counterweight, elevator car and passenger load. Due to the significant impact of ropes on the overall weight of elevator moving masses, the benefits will increase exponentially as travel distance grows.

A Florida roller coaster company wants to build a towering roller coaster in Las Vegas, but the project has a long way to go before becoming a reality.

US Thrill Rides LLC filed an application in April with the Federal Aviation Administration to build a 650-foot-tall observation deck and roller coaster called the Polercoaster. The FAA is reviewing the application, agency spokesman Ian Gregor said.

The company's application includes a map that marks the proposed location for the coaster as the Tropicana. But Tropicana officials would not confirm any involvement in the project. “We have been approached by many companies,” said Fred Harmon, the Tropicana's chief marketing officer. “However, no commitments have been made.”

US Thrill Rides CEO Michael Kitchen reportedly has been talking with banks willing to dole out loans for the multi-million dollar Polercoaster. But Kitchen would not confirm loan approval or talk about the project.

“We need to decline an interview and cannot comment at this time on any specific project in Vegas,” he said.

Federal law requires FAA to review projects more than 200 feet tall to determine if they could pose a hazard to airplanes or navigation equipment. Given the possibility of the Polercoaster going up near the Tropicana, the FAA must make sure its height wouldn’t affect the path of planes flying in and out of McCarran International Airport.

The FAA’s opinion is only a recommendation, however, and the agency can’t prevent developers from building. It's up to local governments to decide whether to issue building permits. And local leaders in the past have killed or altered projects because of FAA concerns.

Stratosphere developer Bob Stupak originally wanted the 1,149-foot hotel tower to be 1,815 feet high, but his proposal was denied by the city.

Plans for Crown Las Vegas, a 1,064-foot-tall resort planned for the site of the former Wet ‘n Wild water park on the Strip, never reached fruition because of concerns about its height. The FAA in 2006 deemed the tower a potential aviation hazard, and developer Chris Milam, who subsequently pitched a Henderson sports stadium complex, abandoned the project in 2008.

The first designs were submitted by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (designers of Freedom Tower and Burj Khalifa).
