And here is an update on the tenants move in dates I found on the 621 Capitol Mall Web Site; I just wish the light display was done in time for when the tenants started to move in  ........

U.S. Bank branch office is scheduled to move into the project on April 19th, 2008. The bank will be open for business on the following Monday. Shortly thereafter, office tenants, California Restaurant Association and U.S. Bank, will move in and be open for business on April 28th, 2008

^The beginnings of a canyon? Now if only the state would re-do the soviet empire office buildings between the capital and 7th street.

While I was taking a few of these pics, I noticed there were people in the parking lot carrying boxes into the building with their children helping them as this building is about to open for business!!! What a beautiful sight to see!!

One word.......WOW!!!!!!!!!!! :omg:

I bet this looked soooo cool in person!! Yeah -- this will add a lot to the skyline at night. Now if we could just get the floors in the middle filled up :) You know what I think this building is missing -- is something like a sculpture outside the front doors. They need to add something -- a raised flower bed or a fountain or something....

So was the light at the top moving (or flowing) like a river -- or do you think this is the trial period they were talking about?

Anyway, like always great shots Innov8!!! I may have to take the trip down there at night very soon.....

Thank you sir :D

The lights were still and not moving. That actually worked better for me
in taking the photos so the colors did'nt blur. I saw hints or green and purple
being show on top too. The lobby's cool with the suspended lights, check it out

I was there Saturday afternoon and evening. According to the front desk security lady, the top was wired incorrectly, so it'll be a little bit before everything is working properly (in other words, we will have to wait for the "video"). Right now, I'm not that impressed.

Wow, what a fantastic building this turned out to be. It definitely brought the Sacramento skyline up a caliber or two. It's nice to see. Good for you, Sacramento! ;)

It looked a little sharper tonight. I believe the artists were across the street with radios trying to tweak it. It does rotate through the colors, but it also looks like they're trying to get a message to E.T.

Great shots Steve. Doe's you opinion of the tower improve now that you
have seen the full light display?

The lights scored a few more points in my book even if the tower it's self let me down and the forgotten north side.

Actually, no, my opinion is not improved. In fact, it's a little worse. I had VERY high hopes for the tower, because I thought the light show would be different. I was picturing a mesh of MANY thousands of lights working together and directly depicting a much more life-like video. I knew it would not be the quality of an LCD display, but I thought it would be sort of like one. This is nothing more than a "few" lights projecting on louvers. It's still awesome, don't get me wrong, and I think as the software controlling the show improves, it will look a bit finer, but it's definitely not what I thought.

(By the way, I've figured out that my dream for the display is probably many times more expensive)

Extra LEDs will add to Sacramento building's artistic lighting
By Jon Ortiz of The Sacramento Bee

Large panels of light-emitting diodes are suspended in the U.S. Bank Tower's lobby atrium. The display has been designed by artist Michael Hayden to suggest an abstract waterfall.

Nearly a month ago, the louvered top of the new U.S. Bank Tower briefly glowed with a cutting-edge light display that promised to change Sacramento's nighttime skyline.

Since then it's been dark.

The building's developer, Sacramento-based David S. Taylor Interests, and Santa Rosa artist Michael Hayden shut down the project to add more light-emitting diode projectors to the roof. Workers will install them Wednesday. On Thursday, the "Lumetric River" display will again light the 25-story office building's crest.

"I'm telling people that it will be on for good then," said Ellen Warner, who oversees the building's design and construction for David Taylor Interests. "But I have to tell you, after working on this for two years, that hiccups happen."

"Lumetric River" is the first and most visible piece of the $130 million U.S. Bank Tower's ambitious two-part public art project. It uses the the building's five-story, 150-foot-wide crest to capture digital images of rushing river water projected by powerful roof-mounted LEDs.

The water theme continues in the building's atrium with a second piece that uses LED video technology to suggest an abstract waterfall.

Last month the developer and the artist flipped the switch for the rooftop array. They weren't satisfied .

"There were gaps that the average person wouldn't have noticed, but we did," Warner said. "There were a couple of spots where we wanted to add more lights."

Taylor Interests has kept the display offline while the Rancho Cordova unit of Dallas-based Lighting Science Group Corp. manufactures the extra LEDs. Lighting Science built both parts of the U.S. Bank Tower display.

Taylor Interests executive Warner hasn't said how much the company has put into U.S. Bank Tower's art but confirmed it runs into "the hundreds of thousands of dollars."

Hey thanks for posting that Innov8 -- I was going to head down there but had no idea they had it off. Hopefully it will be better than ever --

Hey I have heard that Morton's is going to move into the tower -- but does anyone know where exactly in the tower they will move into?? I would think the ground floor little cafe style stores they have are too small -- perhaps the top floor??

Morton's Steakhouse Leaving Downtown Plaza
By Mike Dunne - mdunne@sacbee.com
Last Updated 12:10 pm PDT Tuesday, July 8, 2008

Sacramento's Westfield Downtown Plaza may be about to get a splashy giant LED screen but it looks to be losing one of its brighter lights. Morton's The Steakhouse, a fixture of the mall for 15 years, is on the verge of relocating to the new U.S. Bank Tower at 621 Capitol Mall.

According to an announcement this morning by Roger Drake, chief communications officer for Morton's The Steakhouse in Chicago, the chain's Sacramento branch is leaving Downtown Plaza to help make way for a proposed redevelopment of the mall.

"We have secured an alternate site ... at 621 Capitol Mall," Drake said. "A more formal announcement will be made once plans are finalized with respect to the ... mall," he added.

As Bee business columnist Bob Shallit reported last month, Downtown Plaza is to undergo an ambitious update next year. Plans call for a large guitar outside Hard Rock Cafe at Seventh and K streets to be relocated, plus a new indoor-outdoor dining area above the Hard Rock, a Target store, and a 20-foot-tall LED screen around the building housing the Hard Rock.

The U.S. Bank Tower where Morton's is to move also is big on LED displays. The 25-story office building is topped by one, called "Lumetric River," while the structure's atrium includes a second, called "The Rapids."

Officials of Downtown Plaza and David S. Taylor Interests, which developed U.S. Bank Tower, didn't immediately return phone calls for comment.

It would be so nice if someone would finally put a restaraunt on the top floor of one of these high rises. It would be so nice to have dinner while overlooking the city and the valley. Would even be better if it were to rotate like the Equinox on top of the Hyatt in San Francisco.

I agree -- lets hope the plan will go through to put one on the top floor of 500 Capitol Mall
