It's shots like these that make me hate Sacramento. Of course, the weather also had a great deal to do with it since today was one of the five or six days of the year where we experience true English skies, but it really comes down to this actual city. Figured I'd post it since this is my first shot in weeks since I've been grounded due to the cold from Hell.

I saw on the news how thousands of Californians have died from the near freezing temperatures and how the rest are enrolling in drama classes.

I saw on the news how they were hyping yesterday and today as some huge storm. Only in California can stop-start downpours be considered a huge storm. I bet Minneapolis or Chicago would call this weather a drizzle. As for the drama classes comment . . . meh, what do you expect from a 17 year old?

well anyways... i edited my last shots so here's the 'updates' which don't look much different. i also deleted the pictures from my flickr and reuploaded them. they still show up in the last page but here ya go in case they go bye bye.

on this one i softened the fur on my cat because it looked too sharp.

and this one i cropped because there were some branches on the top corners that off balanced the picture.

That was shot southwest of San Angelo, Texas, from one of the buttes that gave the Twin Buttes reservoir its name. The film was Kodak Tri-X (ISO 400), which was grainy.

That's a spectacular skyline shot, with all those glittering lights against the twilight sky. I think the lights add to the feeling of density.

I like that photo, it's kinda surprising how grainy it is though. I don't think even my point and shoot gets that noisy! People today would reject it but I like it. I learned the technique for duplicating the Tri-X look in Photoshop once but I forgot it. I wasn't sure how accurate it was anyways, since I've never used TriX (or any film for that matter). Do you still use film?

Dramatic shot, Ayreonaut! That looks like a big strike; I'll bet it made a lot of noise up close.

I learned the technique for duplicating the Tri-X look in Photoshop once but I forgot it. I wasn't sure how accurate it was anyways, since I've never used TriX (or any film for that matter). Do you still use film?

With film, the rule of thumb is "more speed = more grain." Old Tri-X was less grainy when processed with careful attention to time and temperature, and with the right developer; I always used D-76 in a 1:1 dilution in a Nikor tank. When I shot these, I didn't have anyplace I could work with it, so I dropped it off at the Base Exchange and I think they sent it to some bargain-basement outfit. A lot of my negs from there are full of embedded dust and scratches and uneven development streaks.

Scanning was unheard of then, too, and a lot of film of that era prints better (in a wet darkroom) than it scans. The fine resolution capability of a good scanner really picks up grain in the older emulsions. Newer films are engineered to be more scanner friendly, and Kodak T-Max 100 scans really smooth. For color negative, Fuji Reala 100 is sweet. The fine resolution capability of a good scanner really picks up grain in the older emulsions.

I haven't shot film since 2004, when I got my first DSLR. In 35mm, I don't think it offers me any advantages over digital, and it takes a lot more time and effort to get it right. I have some good medium-format cameras (2 TLR Rolleis and a Mamiya 7) and was a big fan of Fuji Provia 100F with those, but the local custom lab closed and I haven't wanted to bother with sending it out. I suppose I could shoot black-and-white with them, because I could process that at home.

There were strikes every two or three seconds for at least an hour. It was insane, I've never seen anything like it. It was the loudest, most intense storm I've seen.

Unfortunately, a couple minutes after that photo the rain caught up to us and I had to run back to the car.

Wow, how did that little train station survive in that spot over all these years, its so cool looking.

It looks like a switch tower, where an operator once might have worked to control switches and signals to regulate the movement of trains. Most of those functions now have been automated and/or centralized, and these towers mostly are no longer staffed but some survive because they still house signaling and communications equipment.

I don't know how I've missed seeing that in all my prowling the area over the past 25 years. Is that Metra?

One shot from the archives: Irion County, Texas' first permanent courthouse, built 1901 at Sherwood from locally-quarried stone. In 1911 the new
Kansas City, Mexico and Orient railroad bypassed Sherwood by about a mile and a half, and established the new railroad town of Mertzon. Businesses
began to leave Sherwood and relocate to Mertzon, and in 1937 the county seat migrated there after a popular vote. Sherwood became a ghost town.

The sign says "Sherwood Baptist Church" and gives the hours of worship. There never was a clock; the hands were painted on pointing to the supposed
time of Abraham Lincoln's death. This wasn't uncommon in hardscrabble communities where there wasn't enough money for a clock right away.

Wow, that courthouse is amazing, its so cool that the painted on clock survived all of these years, lots of times, the old clock towers to those wonderful courthouses collapsed or was blown off by strong winds, at least a lot of the ones in Arkansas had that happen to em.

Talking about courthouses, heres an amazing courthouse I found while driving out in eastern Arkansas last week. Its now the Powhatan Courthouse State Park, didnt know it was there and drove around a corner and wow, a giant courthouse just out in the middle of nowhere. This town was also bypassed by a railroad and turned into a ghost town, now all the remains is this awesome building which was built in 1888.

http://i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k591/birdboy1/courth.jpg

Then a little further east I visited the Louisiana Purchase State Park out in the delta. It was the starting point for the plotting of land with townships and ranges after the territory was purchased form the French in 1803. The survey started under President Madison in 1815 from the very spot of the marker.

http://i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k591/birdboy1/courthh.jpg

And now going even more to the east, went to Memphis. It was amazing to say the least.

http://i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k591/birdboy1/memphis.jpg

Then going back west, stopped by Little Rock to take some photos from the roof that the owners of the building let me go up on, it was very cool and a rare experience to get to photograph from up there.

I like the brilliant display of stars in the Arkansas courthouse photo. One of my best memories from West Texas was how dark the skies were at night, and how vividly bright and close the stars appeared.

I haven't been in Memphis since shortly after I shot the Sherwood Courthouse, and I wasn't into urban photography then. It's close enough to where I live for an easy road trip.

Yeah, it seems kind of rare to get a picture of a building like that with stars. The aerial is great as well. Also, I didn't know Memphis has a streetcar system.

Oh man, Memphis has tons and tons of streetcars, probably the most Ive seen in any city, and they are all historic streetcars. One goes by at least every 2 minutes and the system is very large in Memphis, its pretty sweet. Little Rock also has a streetcar line, not as extensive as Memphis but its expanding soon. With the stars, it was a 30 second exposure. Its hard to get stars in photos a lot of times, you have to get the lighting just right and be far away from any city centers. The lighting on the courthouse was pretty dim so I was able to capture the stars as well without overexposing the building. Thanks for the compliments :)

Thundertubs, that photo looking down the pier onto the lake deserves to be printed large and framed. It's the sort of image that would be good on the wall above a desk, to be gazed at when one needs a mental escape from drudgery and pressure. The light and the scene came together perfectly, and you really captured the feeling.

Yea, if any of y'all have these on Flickr. Post the link below the photo, cause I'd definitely like to "Fave" some of'm.

This one was taken just outside of Birmingham, about 5 miles from downtown, in a preserve in Hoover, AL. Bright and sunshiny day, but I managed to cut out the glare.

Very true. A lot of people think it's all farmland, haha. There are some pretty flat places, but about 1/3 of the state is at least very hilly. In some cases, the vertical relief of the mountains rivals states further north and east.

Birmingham is definitely one of those cities that has a lot to offer in the mountain (hill if you're from somewhere like Colorado) department. It's nice to see regional leadership taking action to preserve places like the one I took the above picture in.

If any of you haven't seen pictures of some waterfalls in Alabama, you might wanna do a Flickr search for Desoto Falls, Noccalulu Falls, or Little River Falls. They aren't grand by any means, but they're definitely a sight to see. :)

That's the water tower in Volunteer Park, isn't it? I was there in 1982 and went up. Tiny windows but a fabulous view. It's a beautiful park, so lush and green.
