How do you get your photos to pop like this? i love the clean smoothness of the image and how you still tend to not lose an definition or detail.

so just some basic questions: whats type of camera are you using (motor+lens) what were your settings (all of them if possible like the mode and white balance along with and anything else you might have set). plus did you do any post processing and if so whats going on there?

im sure lots of people would love to hear what you answers are to some of these questions.

bulliver
Sep 20, 2010, 9:54 PM
Thanks diskojoe. Camera is a Nikon D90, lens is the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 at 11mm. Exposure is 5 seconds at f/11 and iso200. For other settings, you can go ahead and click through to the flickr page where the EXIF is available to read.

WB is on auto here. If I can identify the lighting type I may use a specific setting, such as sodium-vapour for typical streetlights, but the mixed lighting in this particular scene forced me to leave it on auto. The camera chose 5655K for this particular shot.

As for post...I shoot raw, and use my raw editor to change things such as EV compensation and WB if necessary (though I did neither on this shot). I also use the raw editor for perspective adjustment, as the wide angle lens causes vertical lines to 'lean' backwards. I straightened them up a bit, but you can see it's still not perfect. From the raw editor I save to 16-bit tiff, and do any levels adjustments if necessary. I then usually push contrast and gamma in equal amount to make it 'pop' as you say. After that, an unsharp mask, and export to 8-bit jpg for uploading to flickr.

Most people ask me about the blue in the sky, which I answer is straight out of camera. A few folks didn't believe me until I went out shooting with them and showed them on my camera's LCD screen. The blue is all about the time of day you shoot, not camera settings. I can show a few other shots taken the same night with similar settings to illustrate this:

10 minutes after sunset:
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4129/4995372960_30924a7544_m.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/badcomputer/4995372960/)

21 minutes after sunset:
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4092/4995372048_08ea41b70a_m.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/badcomputer/4995372048/)

and 31 minutes after sunset:
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4108/4995371260_0e6f9eaa28_m.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/badcomputer/4995371260/)

Those should not, however, be taken as hard and fast times. The length of blue hour changes with both time of year, and geography. For instance, when I lived in Edmonton, on the prairies blue hour lasted well over an hour. Here in mountainous BC it lasts much shorter, only 35-45 minutes or so.

diskojoe
Sep 21, 2010, 12:50 PM
thanks for the details there. so what im getting from this is that your camera and lens are better then mine :haha: about the only thing you do different in post then me is to save to the 16 bit tiff before additional editing. typically i would just save from there to 8 bit jpg but i do almost all of my editing with the raw converter or photomatix. as far as the verticals getting a little slanted it does not look bad that way maybe a bit unnatural but im cool with the unnatural. at this point i really wish i could get a better lens.

and there is a way to cheat at the blue sky. if your camera has a tungsten setting you can set it to high and it will give you a blue sky but it wont be perfect so you would have to warm it a little because the tungsten will make parts of the building blue too. but usually i try to hit things right before sunset or after.

@discojoe: I dunno, I got great results with my D40 and kit lens. I don't have the kit lens anymore but the D40 is still great. Nothing wrong with nice gear, but I think if you are expecting instantly better pics with a new lens you may be disappointed. Just takes trial and error, and getting familiar with your tools, both camera and software. Anjyway...we should probably continue this in the general photography chat thread...

Look before you sniff.

Edit: One of the people who saw the photo identified the little hunter as phiddipus audax, the daring jumping spider. I have zillions of those around my place, especially around both the front and back doors, every summer, but they're usually less than half the size of that one. A little internet research says they're prone to attack if they feel threatened, can jump up to fifty times their body length, can reach a little more than 3/4 inch in length, and bite. Their bite is no more dangerous than a bee sting; in other words, so long as you're not allergic it's painful but not dangerous.

We have them too. We actually have some in the house. They like to hang around the computer as a matter of fact. I'll see one run across the monitor or the computer case. They also usually hang out around windows. I leave them alone. I don't like spiders, but they don't really bother me.

Awesome shots i_am_hydrogen!

Here's a tractor:
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4153/5024775373_d7f2c1109b_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/badcomputer/5024775373/)

That's a highly collectible tractor; it has rear fenders that totally shield the rear wheels to keep from snagging limbs, and it may even be a vineyard model, built to a narrower stance than standard farm tractors. It's had a hard life, but I've seen restorers do remarkable work with beat-up sheet metal. Orchard and vineyard tractors in most makes and sizes were limited production, and many eventually had their extra sheet metal stripped and junked to make them easier to service and repair. Having its fenders and hood sides still intact probably would make it very desirable to the right collector.

Thanks for the info Robert, this is indeed sitting in a vineyard. There was another similar tractor sitting right behind where I shot this from.

The Alberta photos bring back memories of one of my favorite vacations; around 1995 I attended the annual show at Pioneer Acres at Irricana. I arrived several days early and stayed at a nice motel in Airdrie, and used my rental car to roam the area, including a drive up through Banff and then on the Ice Fields Parkway up to the glaciers. Another day I headed for Drumheller.

It's splendid country, from rolling prairies to rocky, gravelly badlands, to mountains and beautiful rivers, and the people are wonderful hosts.

I spent some time looking around Calgary, too. It's a fascinating, progressive city with good light rail and an excellent recreational trail system. In the nearly two weeks I spent in the area, no homicides were reported. In my much smaller hometown, that would be unusual.

Me and some friends spent 14 hours driving 800km through central Alberta yesterday. It a treasure trove of old barns, abandoned homesteads, and other assorted derelict structures. The landscape is beautiful. Very difficult to capture the vastness of it, as soon as you put a frame on it it's gone.

Abandoned roundhouse in Hanna Alberta:
