For some reason I keep forgetting that Legacy is 800' and keep forgetting how much impact it's going to have. It looks great from that angle, bridging the gap between Trump and Waterview.

^ Never thought anything would obscure Sears from that angle...

Jibba
May 13, 2008, 6:04 AM
^True that. It's always neat to see Sears from that angle because there is this huge, hulking, modern monster overlooking the quaint and pretty wall of the Michigan Ave. mid-rises. Although, it's not as if this effect will be completely erased from every angle in the park looking west, and I definitely have no problem with Legacy going up. And besides, Sears isn't the only behemoth overlooking the Michigan streetwall: there's also that huge fat-ass on the left-hand side of the photo making its presence known ever-subtly...

What's great about that last shot is the illusion of 55 E. Monroe, Sears, the middle tower (don't know the name), Chase Tower and the tower on the right (don't know the name either) all being roughly the same height.

And not only that, but they would of had plenty of time to rebuild the pyramid top which they SHOULD have been required to do, especially with the location on the Michigan streetwall and the history of M.W. in Chicago.

This is what the site www.glasssteelandstone.com (http://www.glasssteelandstone.com/BuildingDetail/1222.php) had to say about 6 North Michigan:

Today's state of affairs is the result of mistakes of the past. The top of this building used to support a ten-story tower, topped with a three-story pyramid, a temple, and a weather vane in the shape of the female form. Now that is the way the headquarters of a merchant prince should look. at the time it still sported its glorious tower, it was the headquarters of the Montgomery Ward company; a major player in the American Midwest until the late 20th century. The building was erected to enhance the stature of the company, and invoke a sense of trust in its customers. As the Chicago Tribune noted, people from the heartland were worried about this new-fangled mail order catalog scheme, and the building helped calm fears that they would send their money away and get nothing in return. But as Ward's fortunes would later crumble, the tower had to be taken down for safety reasons. It was disassembled in 1947, emasculating this structure and transforming it into architectural mediocrity.

What is the name of the rather tall GLASS building with a square on the top, and the other glass building right under the big old sears tower?

The glass building underneath the Sears Tower, provided I am looking at the one you are referring to, is 55 W. Monroe, designed by Helmut Jahn. Don't know about the other one, though.

Man, do I ever agree with that! If I had the money I'd fund it myself. The building would of course still look a little mure "lumpen" than the photo you posted because of the additional floors added around the base of the tower earlier in the 20th cent.

BTW does the statue that used to be on top still stand on the old MW Chicago Ave. HQ where it was originally moved?

BTW does the statue that used to be on top still stand on the old MW Chicago Ave. HQ where it was originally moved?

Yes - or at least a reproduction of the original one. Ward's built buildings on the north and south sides of Chicago Ave. The south building has been turned into lofts, and the north building hosts a selection of unusual businesses which require large spaces. The statue sits on top of the tower for the south loft building, which is called "One River Place".

I've heard different stories on the provenance of the statue. Some stories claim that it once stood atop the second Madison Square Garden in NYC, or the Agriculture Building at the Columbian Exposition. Others claim that it stood on the Ward's Michigan Avenue building.

west side updates: the scaffolding that was supporting the old facade is almost completely taken down now. maybe a couple unattached beams remaining that might be taken down today.

Also, the first layer of windows is in. I didn't get a chance to study, but they look fine as far as glass goes. They might have been dark or opaque windows with stainless steel borders, but that might be my memory playing tricks on me.

Personally, I think the glass looks really promising so far. It appears to be a pretty sophisticated curtain, especially for a residential building. (SSG with capped, low-profile horizontal mullions, unless I am not seeing it correctly. This is akin to Jahn's Fairbanks project.)

Given the site and height of this tower, I am glad to see that the overall system might live up to its prominence. We'll have to wait for a month or two to begin to judge the overall aesthetic effect, but it's a good start I think.

The high reflectivity might be only for the parking floors... but even if not, I can live with it.

Eventually...Chicago
May 22, 2008, 10:33 PM
I know this is a general building material question, but as far as "bird compatible" glazing does it matter whether or not the glass is reflective?

At first i thought it would make it worse since they wouldn't be able to tell that it was a relfection, on the other hand, clear glass would be invisible to them.
What exact do they do to protect the birds?

Dr. Taco
May 22, 2008, 11:32 PM
^ birds can see parts of the spectrum that we can't, so they put patterns in the windows that are invisible to us

Legacy has been hidden until recentky. Its also a better building, therefore less conroversial, and OMP had the benefit of 4 buildings under discussion, none of which compare to Legacy.

I hope that when I get back to Chicago next month, we'll see some glass on the east side.

Also, a not of curiosity, it seems that there are absolutely no distinguishing markers for the placement of the balconies, no obstructing columns or anything. Just found that unique.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think the city just raised the fees for sidewalk closures? Perhaps that motivated an early removal of the braces.

Either that, or they're removing it early to allow city crews to come in and paint the L tracks.

Nowhereman1280

Or maybe this spot is just more cramped than the Heritage and they attached the facade sooner so they could use the sidewalk space that was taken up by the frame for staging.

It looks hyper-reflective.
It'll be a gem in the skyline.

Nice photos!! My "unsung hero" of Chicago's tallest under construction due to it being buried among many other high rises...

I think the reflectivity of the glass facade is going to help brighten up eternally dark Wabash Av..

I love the protected facades, Im glad they did that and didnt just tear em down, it really looks cool with those old buildings in front and that beautiful tower rising behind it. Oh, and has anyone else thoght that the Millinium Park stage area is just god aweful ugly?
