I think this was a delivery to the neighbors roof, but was of interest if no one has seen this spectacle of how large loads are delivered without a crane.

When this one stands up above 50-60 floors it'll be a different skyline. Although mother nature stole the show this morning.

Whats the name of the two glass buildings that are (1) behind the helicopter on the left, and (2nd) right beneath the helicopter on the right? These buildings together with Legacy add color to one dark section of the skyline! I love those buildings.

That is really good looking glass. Now that a few rows are done it's easier to get a handle on it. It's a much paler blue than I thought it would be, and I like it. The Mich Ave side is going to look great.

Thanks, I know I saw a Sikorsky S-58 in a similar paint scheme (I was wearing sunglasses so I remeber colors a bit differently) on Saturday but I just can't remember where exactly where (it was quite a hectic day and I was all over the city).

Preservationnation.org has placed the Michigan Avenue street wall on its 11 endangered historic places and its partly due to this tower because they say that these tall glass towers behind MA will negatively effect the look of it but I dont think it will, as long as they dont mess with the actual street wall itself than I think these new tall towers behind it will actually make it look better. Heres the article http://www.preservationnation.org/travel-and-sites/sites/midwest-region/michigan-avenue-streetwall.html I love this tower but I hope destroying historic buildings does not become a major trend in historic districts.

I think both Park Monroe and Legacy at Millenium Park will be a nice addition to the skyline. I dont like the concept of making a building have two different facades, but since Legacy will be glassy then Park Monrow will be a nice compliment.

aaron38

Park Monroe is the conversion of the large office building in that picture to condos. The building isn't getting any bigger, and there's no thread for it.

wrab
Jun 19, 2008, 10:36 PM
^ Cuz if we all just ignore the Park Monroe conversion, maybe it will just go away ;)

But Legacy is already turning out better than I had feared, largely because the glass is looking so good, and the signature SCB Wolf Bands (thanks, Honte, for that monicker) are more subdued than some of SCB's other recent Chicago projects.

Beginning to break the plateau now. Not bad.

As for Park Monroe, any change will be improvement over the current state of the ugly bugger. I just don't see this bulky grey hunk of weathered metal getting any worse.

I agree, but still...I think Legacy is going to be in the "Better than expected" category. However, I kind of feel like Legacy and Aqua are siblings, jsut because they're the same height at the same time, and both great buildings, though the iconic label probly can't work for Legacy.

JMO_0121
Jul 16, 2008, 2:27 PM
:previous: I think that once the novelty of the "waves" on Aqua wears off, because you can only see the waves from close up, other than that it just looks like any other BOX building. IMO Legazy will be MUCH better, it has more to it, better location,IT will be seen by more people than Aqua will. IDK, I just think it stands out more that Aqua does, and if they dont do anything to the railings on Aqua, we will all be depresed.

Nowhereman1280
Jul 16, 2008, 10:24 PM
^^^ I think that you all underestimate how visable the waves on Aqua will be from a distance. The only reason you can't see them from Millenium Park right now is that you are at relitively the same angle as the balconies are at floors 50 and lower. Once they get into the higher floors, the waves will become much more pronounced from a distance. Its sorta like Venitian blinds, if you have them perfectly level (open) you can see right through the ones close to your level, but the higher above you the slats get, the less and less you can see through the window and the more blinds you see. If that makes any sense.

Either way, Legacy is still a great building and will stand as such on its own merits, especially if the glass continues to turn out the way I think it has been.

How many floors are in the podium? 7-8? I put it somewhere around floor 28, and probably getting close to the 350' point.

The Terrace unit level, which is about even with the building to the south, is floor 15. The ground/first floor is retail and lobby, then 11 floors of parking. Floors 13 and 14 are the workout areas and pool. They are probably actually somewhere around floor 35 at this point.

According to numbers I've got, Elevation of floor 15 is "supposed" to be 175'5" above grade (which I'm assuming is the ground). So figuring 10ish feet per floor (9 foot ceilings and around 1 foot of concrete per floor), and the building is probably closer to 380' at this point. Pretty good guess on the height, though!

^ No, that's just how people talk in Staten Island...which is why they've been sequestered.... ;)

fair enough. :haha: At least most of you took my humor in good sport. Seriously though, it's gorgeous. This building is living up to be much greater than I expected.

I'm still reeling over the ~SURPRISE-the floorplate is a trapezoid!~ that hit me the first time I saw it peek over the Michigan Ave wall while I was in Millennium Park. That was cool.

...better honte? ;)

Its interesting hot the columns fit in the framework like they were just another piece of glass.

^ The columns are so bizarre.

Not to take away from the positive vibe for this building - definitely I agree with the building excitement. But I have to mention that I wish they would have exploited that amazing structural cantilever - now concealed - instead of giving us false columns.

^ Even if you can't stand MidContinental Plaza, you have to admit that it adds some variety in the skyline in terms of color and texture.

Seeing the hints of Legacy's glass, I am a touch fearful of too much blue everywhere. Someone should bust out the Sofitel glass-surface scheme for a tall Loop tower. Like Xerox but glossier and more prominent...
