This is the building under construction on the plot just next to the Shanghai Bank Tower. We have been thinking for mounths that the Jasper Tower will stand there until shanghigh woke us up.

There is not any information available about this project and as nothing surfaced since its construction began, I don't think I'll be able to find anything. No architect and developer name, no renderings. About its height, we can expect a 200+ meters building. May be there are some informations on the yard ?

Shanghigh told us the development name is "Merryland". I did found a http://www.merryland.com.cn site (real estate marketing and banking) but it is in chinese so I can't tell if there is any connection with this project.

Anyway we won't have to wait too long before this building takes shape, for foundation works are now quite advanced.

All we can hope for this building is that the rendering that surfaced a few weeks ago is no more of actuality or this building wil be the shame of Lujiazui.

That's why it's a total disaster, a 50s russian tower among an emerging XXIth century CDB, it's totally out of context and not in an interesting way.

This building reminds me of early 20th century New-York. Not bad by itself. Not sure though it will fit its surrounding. On the other hand, its uniqueness might make it stand out of the crowd.
I wouldn't mind something similar in my hometown : Montréal, Canada.

Really we'll have to wait and see if it fits in. It will sit right next to a blatantly postmodern design, which might help make the transition from 20th Century New York neo-gothicism (not sure if that's even a real term - lol) to the 21st century designs of the rest of the area. If the facade treatment is more of a reflective metallic surface and not concrete, it might be something really nice. Otherwise, I agree. It could suck something fierce.

But I'm still optimistic...

On the other hand, why not ? a building that stands out simply because everything else around it is futuristic ( let's say : asian post-modernism ? ) After all, all of our north-american downtowns are built from different style buildings, all of which are witnessing their own decades._Sometimes, a building does the opposite : the A.T.& T. building ( now Sony Towre ) with its Chippendale top is nothing else than historicism._Doesn't fit but stands out. Maybe the same will aplly to this building here - though with less permanent impression probably.

February 25th 2005, from the Oriental Pearl (by moyan808). Lots of informations on this photo.

First floor of the Merryland core.
On the Jasper tower plot, underground floors seem to be under construction, too bad we don't see more.
Construction has definitively resumed on the Gran Melia plot too.
The cladding of the AZIA center top is different from the rest, isn't it.
Look at those cleared plots, north to the soon relocated ship yard, I wonder what has been planned for this big area. An extension of the Lujiazui zone adding density to in the background of the 90s first towers would be ideal but when I walked there, I saw some recent residentials (both midrises and lowrises) so I'm not sure this will be planned as a CBD, not even the closer part to Lujiazui.

I still wonder how construction of such a retro building in the Lujiazui CBD got a green light.
A counterfeiting of an old american skyscraper in a chinese twenty first century CBD !
Cheap contrast indeed, How creative !

May be I didn't get it...

- A kind of "Fuck the context !" manifesto ?
- An honnest revolutionary attempt ?
- The birth of trash urbanism ? (just wait for the Pingan Financial Mansion on the next block)
- Ikebana as urbanism (Oh ! Yes, yes, yes ! That red roof will be of the most great effect
next to the green glass of the AZIA center curtain wall, wouldn't it) ?
- Sabotage ?
- A new form of terrorism ?

Wait, wait ! We're still left with the safety wheel of post greening : do sequoias grow in Shanghai ?

(Panic in Lujiazui)

I'm interesting in seeing the cladding for this building. When they initially released the renderings, some people called it a disaster. I wonder if that will be true.

I can't believe that such a nice construction is going to turn into this :

I have a feeling the building is going to look like a bigger version of this one on Yan 'an Rd.

This building looks so solid right now. I wonder if we'll be pleasantly surprised with the final result.

It seems that in Shanghai they build the entire structural system before starting on the facade. Thanks for the pics! Can't wait to see some facade.

Development Tower and Jasper will help to create a nice walled effect along the street.

Too bad the SHKP project is going to break this "walled effect" on the other side of Century Avenue. Circling Lujiazui's three supertalls this way would have been great.

Setback floors construction, the building is neraly topped out. I can't wait for the cladding to begin, will it be retro or will it create a sort of distance that save the building a bit ? Same thing with the roof colour, I hope it won't be red as in the rendering (next to AZIA Center green glass... :yuck:)

I took these pics on 13-02-06, and the one from the Oriental Pearl Tower a week before that. Enjoy.

Notice the right hand corner of the top of the building.

Forty five minutes later they had the first signs of the crown up. Quick, huh?

They are starting to clad the building. It will be a brownish, *gulp* pinkish marble. The marble looks really nice in person actually. Quite shiny.

Hmmm. The rendering makes it look like a bright white marble.

So, they stick to this ugly crown. I hoped that they had realized it was not such a goog idea.
