^We aren't 'speculating'. We're saying that our experiences in Shanghai tell us explicitly that there are WAY more highrises in Shanghai than any online list might have listed.

Back to the original topic - this question has probably been answered back in this thread somewhere, but I don't feel like digging through the thread to find the answer: Is there going to be an observation deck on the top side of the hole, or just at the bottom of the hole?

Thanks a bunch! That's fantastic. I can't wait to see the view from way up there and look down on big Jin and the Oriental Pearl Tower. :D This will have to be one of the highest, if not THE highest observation decks in the world, I'd think.

Lecom,
Yes, SWFC passed the 300m mark about a week ago, while Burj Dubai hasn't (as far as I know) just yet.

To the stupid guy that actually thought there are 300 skyscrapers in Shanghai (or actually taking Emporis numbers for any Chinese city, except Hong Kong, seriously).
Both pictures taken facing west. It looks like this in all directions, and as far as any lens can see.

I like those old Colonial era buildings by the waterfront. Didn't know Shanghai had those.

Those were the most substantial buildings that were there besides one pretty tall (at the time) modern hotel. The name of that area is the Bund.

Gotta get up to the Pearl one of these days. The views top Jin Mao's by the look of it.

I'm really curious about the viewing platform in SWFC. I'm hoping for floor to ceiling glass.

Oh, and as for all this # of buildings racket, let's put it this way; I live in the western most district in the city center and I can see over 300 highrises easily from my window and the hallway windows. I honestly wouldn't hesitate to say Shanghai has the most 12+ story buildings in the world. I mean there are 20,000,000 peeps here and maybe .001% of the population live in a house.

Lets not forget about skyscrapers- or we'll suggest to KOHN PEDERSEN AND FOX not to design anymore SKYSCRAPERS (NOT HIGHRISES...LOL)for Shanghai.

The most notable United States architectural innovation has been the skyscraper.More than any other phenomenon, the skyscraper has determined the character of the American city, altering its physicality and land use patterns; prompting design, technological, and infrastructure developments; creating internal work environments; and redefining boundaries and expectations of individuals and groups defined by gender, class, and ethnicity.

Emporis.com ranks Shanghai at 834 buildings completed and HK at 7549...so I quess people trust them over your speculation...lol. Anyway get back on topic about this great building which in my opinion is better than the FT...as a New Yorker I can killed for saying that. I'm sorry I got us on this rant in the first place with my skyline comparison comment.

From what I've seen Shanghai in photos (I've been to Beijing and Wuhan in mainland China myself, but not Shanghai), I just think that Shanghai needs more of a variation in heights in other parts of the city to really make it part of the group of elite skylines. Kuala Lampur to me fits this idea as well (Petronas Towers and Menara Telekom with a lot of the same height inbetween). This is not to say that it won't ever get there. It just isn't there with the construction of this building alone.

On the non-skyscraper side, I've been to over 25 countries on 5 continents, and if you haven't been to China (Mainland, HK, Taiwan all inclusive), then you haven't seen the future of the global marketplace. Say what you want about the US getting out of the gate first, but the US is losing the business and culture marathons as we speak.

As far as numbers of high rises are concerned the only other city that might top Shanghai could be Sao Paulo. I haven't really seen any statistics that seem accurate on this subject, the photos above make it obvious that there are hundreds and hundreds of them. However, Sao Paulo and most other cities couldn't begin to compete with the number of Shanghai buildings like the World Financial Center which are truly impressive skyscrapers. Sao Paulo's buildings are much more modest in size.

Seoul. Not as dense as parts of Shanghai but it goes on for ever! Seoul is mind-bogglingly immense. It just lacks a bunch of super-talls to act as a focal point.
I think the average block of flats is taller (and newer) in Seoul than in S.P. though, so it may mean less of them.
I suspect the real winner is Tokyo but I haven't been there.
All of these cities have huge numbers of towers that don't register on any database. I guess the reasons are much the same way noone bothers to count the two story houses in Perth.

imo, shanghai is already part of the elite group of skylines in terms of size, scale and number of buildings. kuala lumpur isn't even close. but to be honest, i prefer kuala lumpur's skyline and city in general because it looks much cleaner, greener, prettier and more liveable. it's not massively overdeveloped with hundreds of tall buildings randomly constructed on every square block like shanghai. tho it appears kuala lumpur doesnt appear to have been developed based on an organized city grid - buildings seem randomly constructed among small winding streets - i love kuala lumpurs green squares and parks which separates the buildings and prevents the appearance of suffocating density and compactness that characterizes most asian cities. kuala lumpur's architecture in general also looks more tasteful than shanghai's. with the exception of a few buildings like jin mao, shangai's architecture is just so incredibly tacky and tasteless. (they need to install rocket launchers on that oriental pearl tv tower and launch it FAR AWAY into space.) i am not easily impressed by a building's size or height or a city's massive number of buildings. i value greatly the architectural design and a city's thoughtful urban planning. but i guess i'm in the minority in this forum.

Unfortunately, I think the Burj Dubai tower has now exceeded the S.W.F.C in current height and is now climbing with much higher floors and at a quicker rate! This building will now never hold a world record.....which is a big shame.

Took 'em too long to get the damn thing up and moving forward...sounds like my metro area Denver...we have THREE towers slated to go 50 stories or higher, and they are all are bogged down in the mud with financial and planning barriers. Too bad...I love Shanghai's building. :(

The Burj Dubai gets increasingly narrow the higher it goes, so its rate of increase will only accelerate as it nears completion, as opposed to the identical size floors of the SWFC.

Would be alot nicer if the Oriental Pearl wasn't there. That thing is hideous.

Stratosphere,
Actually the Oriental Pearl is my favorite of the whole bunch. It's so futuristic and eye catching that it really gets your attention but to each his own. And of course the World Financial Center is also very unique so when it's complete there's going to be quite a variety of architecture in the area that's for sure.

Orient Pearl is so nasty words cannot describe. I love the Skyline (current and future) regrdless of OP's existence, but 20 years from now, OP will be one of the worlds worst eyesores IMO.
I've got to get to Shanghai for myself. The growth is astonishing. Congrats on some gorgous projects!

It is a lot different to see the Oriental Pearl in person. It fits the skyline well.

I havn't had the pleasure to see it, so I will take your word for it. I don't doubt its better in real life. In photo's it looks far too Buck Rogers, but without actually seeing it in person, I really can't comment.

I too like the Oriental Pearl. It's unique in design to other observation/television towers and the color stands on it's own accord.
