I heard the architect on the radio say that they are changing it more into an outdoor mall - I think that the stores will have their front doors facing the outside.

Thats correct.. imagine the hallways of the mall right now.. but they are roads rather than pedestrian walkways.. now imagine adding a few more buildings to the site.. it should look something like the Aspen Landing mall in terms of scale.

The first renovated store opened a few months ago. Dollarrama! I guess that is the new and exciting direction they are going.

Good Life Fitness just opened this week. Cabela’s will be the anchor.

But I love the new slogan.
When complete, we expect the property will become one of the region’s ultimate shopping and dining experience, an urban social heart and the perfect setting for the seamless integration of new office premises.”

What does "urban social heart" even mean?

I don't even understand why they are even expanding since they are already losing businesses anyways.

Isn't that what we are kind of trying to do on places like 17th or Kensington?

Those are neighborhoods. Way different vibe.

You go to 17th or Kensington because you like the atmosphere or there are awesome restaurants or you wonder what's in that favorite shop you like that day.

You go to Deerfoot Mall with the purpose of buying and GTFO.

OHHH That setup.

I thought when it was an outdoor mall, it was similar to the US-style outlet malls.

The fact that you can drive to majority of the stores is a very different setup.

This makes more sense than the one I've envisioned. :haha:

Atleast the aesthetics of it looks relatively good...no cheese-ball entrances and fake public art like at Cross Iron.

I agree at least it looks nice. Realistically I'm not sure you could get much better on that site. The current indoor mall is a dump. I like that it looks modern and at least has wide sidewalks.

Here's a set of plans for the redevelopment from their website, not sure whether or not these are current.

Phase 1: A small set of shops added along 64th. A little bit of the central mall redeveloped into stand-alone stores.
http://i.imgur.com/EEkOZgd.png

Phase 2: They drive a road right through the central N-S axis of the mall, creating a bunch of stores opening up onto the road. The rest of the mall is renovated to work as outdoor-facing stores.
http://i.imgur.com/HKjp8vG.png

Phase 3: A bunch of big box stores built around the periphery of the property, including the existing Sears footprint apparently. There is an office complex shown on the west end; this is the only place that looks like it could be the restaurant cluster in one of the images shown.
http://i.imgur.com/QniXY5i.png

I've always thought that retail has a sort of buzz aspect to it; if a mall starts failing it's hard to turn it around. Not sure that starting the new phase of Deerfoot's life with a Wal*Mart, a Winners and a Dollarama as the anchor tenants is sending the right message.

Kind of surprised they haven't planned a two or three offices on this site in conjunction with the retail
