SOM’s Latest Supertall Building in China

http://blog.archpaper.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/som_tianjin_01.jpg

May 14, 2012

A “supertall” building is one which tops out at over 1,250 feet. Right now, there are 18 completed supertall buildings and 21 under construction. Chicago-based architects Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill (SOM) will break ground on Tuesday on the 1,740-foot-tall CTF Tower in Tianjin, China. It will be the tenth supertall building to begin construction for SOM, the most of any firm in the world. The building is a carefully-crafted design which deliberately merges structural challenges with program and form.

The mixed-use tower in the Tianjin Economic Development Area, an area planned for new growth, has retail at the base, topped with offices, 300 residential units, and a 350-room, 5-star hotel. “The functional aspects of program were integrated with the structure,” said SOM design partner Brian Lee. “And the form was also developed alongside the structural scheme.” Larger floor plates are needed for the office spaces, which are placed near the base of the building. Residential units with smaller floor plate are at the top.

The gentle curves of the building and the large, sloped, concrete elements form a “mega-column,” which acts as an external frame. Environmental conditions also affected the final design. Wind slots, a porous crown at the top of the tower, and a gradiated opacity toward the higher floors all help to decrease wind loads, and the corners are rounded to prevent a vortex effect on the back side of the building.

Now that you mention it, it is very similar... This tower would also look very nice in San Fran.

SOM-Designed Supertall Under Construction in Tianjin
(http://skyrisecities.com/news/2016/05/som-designed-supertall-under-construction-tianjin)

The era of the supertall has certainly taken hold in China, where an immense number of skyscrapers above 300 metres tall are under construction. The Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area is one of the many sites that will be anchored by a supertall, and this one happens to boast a design by the respected team at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. The 530-metre Tianjin Chow Tai Fook Binhai Center will house offices, 300 service apartments, and a five-star hotel with 350 rooms.

While it's a little too phalic for my tastes from some angles, from others, those curves are really sexy and dramatic, like the Italian sports car of supertalls. If this were built in London, it would have 25 different nicknames, and they would all be brilliant.

You can't get that in the US because it's a mature market. China is building its office space now so there's plenty of demand. The US has been doing it for well over a century.

Also @CastleScott

You can't seriously be suggesting that the US does things cheaply compared to China, can you? If so then you're utterly ignorant of China.

Do you think that the stuff you buy (which is almost all entirely made in China in the first place) lasts a long time? No, we all know that it doesn't. Well, now imagine that you're in China where things are made even more cheaply for their domestic market. Nothing here lasts nearly as long as it would in the US. Things break simply because they've been waiting to do so. My old apartment had things that simply fell off. Things that don't simply fall off in the West. Like the paneling on my cupboards. Just fell off. No reason. Just got sick of being on my cupboards I guess.

In the Chinese market, people don't fix things because it's cheaper to buy new ones instead. I see abandoned highrises that in the West we'd guess were maybe 20 years old. Here things are broken down and look useless within 5 to 10 years. The new apartment I bought is actually 18 years old. If you were looking at it through Western eyes you'd have guessed the building was at least 50 or 60 years old based on the condition of the exterior. And not a well-kept 50 or 60 years either. Dirty, very poorly maintained, probably didn't meet code requirements when brand new. THAT'S China.

About the only place where some buildings are maintained is in the flagship cities like Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou. As you get smaller it's like going back in time in terms of conditions and attitudes towards resources and maintenance.

So please, if you're going to say that the US does things cheaply then do it in a thread where we're discussing a place where they do things better.

muppet

Actually, construction costs are much higher here and there are more inspections to pass.

Actually the specs for building codes in the region (China, Taiwan and Japan) are much higher due to the earthquake zones, bi-annual typhoons and seasonal floods (and 50 year mega-floods). In short the buildings there have to be over- engineered, but yeah labour, materials and middlemen are much cheaper - though catching up. China only has a specific window to build so freely before wages start to stifle the plans, and 'value-engineering' starts to raise its darling profile. You're already seeing more plain looking boxes going up in Beijing and Shanghai for a while now. It's the other cities that still have a modicum of free rein.

The White Magnolia Plaza was originally slated to be much wavier:

the design instead got recycled in the cheaper city of Nanchang
