Well, it's been a long time coming with this, having been proposed about 6 years ago and going through a few redesigns......... IT'S FINALLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Also the 200+m tower construction drought is over.

I like the design, it's very sleek.

Melbourne's skyline keep's changing, i love it.

there are like 10-15 proposals over 200m in melbourne right?
and about 3-5 currently under construction with the carlton bewery site the tallest at 298m.

I was looking at the SSP diagram earlier today...

there's only 1 200m tower U/C

The signature tower at CUB is -not- U/C in fact Grocon are looking to offload the site to another developer with the 275m permit in tact.

the only other 200+m tower proposal likely to move to a U/C status soon is 568 Collins St.

they've been saying that for years - however when the residential vacancy is around 4% and population growth at 250k p/a many people will disagree.

In the early 2000s in Melbourne the high-rise construction was concentrated in CBD + Docklands + Southbank. It's now spread to the whole middle ring of 'burbs - so yeah big ones are taking their time, but they're not out of the game!

give it a few years, and Melbourne will become one of the finest skyscraper cities around.

there are a few buildings under construction/approved over 200m that i have found
70 Southbank Boulevard
Prima Tower
568 Collins Street
496 Elizabeth Street
Abode318
and
399 Bourke Street

Do you know what's happening with the CUB site? what stage is it at?

Prima = Pearl.

summary of 200m+ proposals currently

http://i41.tinypic.com/10f18h4.jpg

top row l-r: CUB Site 270m+ (DCM), 70 Southbank Boulevard 208m (Fender Katsalidis), 399 Bourke Street 203m(Fender Katsalidis), 72 Collins Street 220m (architect unknown)
bottow row l-r: 568 Collins St 200m+ (Architect Unknown), 496 Elizabeth St 217m (Peddle Thorpe), Pearl 226m (Arichitect unkown as yet)

originally posted by silvermb on OzScrapers.

updating that from the main projects & construction thread...

CUB Site - as above, it's merely approved and Grocon are seeking a buyer of the site - the rest of the CUB site is being developed in stages, Portrait is the first one Grocon are developing.
70 Southbank Boulevard has had a height increase to 225m, and this weekend's Capital Gain in the Age said that tenants in the existing building were moving so expect sales to start on that soon.
399 Bourke Street - no design change, still waiting for a pre-commitment from a corporate.
72 Collins STreet - has been shortened I think - not sure.
568 Collins Street - construction "rumoured" to commence in July/August (has already gone through its sales cycle)
496 Elizabeth st - still no movement by the developer (Brady) as yet.

btw are you on OzScrapers?

Someone's had a height increase!

Melbourne's 2nd Tallest Residential Building Moves to Contract Documentation

Situated on the corner of Queensbridge Street and Power Street in Southbank, directly opposite the Crown Entertainment Complex, Prima Tower will rise 72 levels to join the Rialto and Eureka as the being amongst Melbourne’s tallest buildings.

Now at contract documentation stage, the 253 metre apartment tower will cater for the growing premium residential market. It is being architecturally designed by Disegno Australia for the joint venture partnership of PDG Corporation and Schiavello.

253m is RL, the site is 2m above sea level, hence new height is: 251m (4m shortern than Rialto!)

can a mod update the thread title?

cheers.

I've always wondered why it takes so long for the mods to update these threads with height increases. The ICE thread and Aura thread for Toronto have sat partially updated for months after news of height increases. I should request that thread starters be allowed to update thread names in the future.

By the way that's a great looking tower Melborne! Very Slick!

so it looks aqs if i was right!!! no change to shape of building for the extra floors, jsut copy and paste!

i got the email today anounciing stage 1 and 2 (the ORIGINAL tower) completley sold out and the new levels are marketed as stage 3 which apparently have different floor plans, but no details on that.

NEW taller version (and i believe new angle???)

update - hello beginnings of core box.

reason its taken sooooo long to get to this stage is the lovely ground that exists on the southern bank of the river and the extra "shit" that has to go into the ground

These blokes have done more in two days than LUS seemed to do in six months. A whole lot less of standing around and more working.

I imagine that close to the river, the soil has to have a relatively high water table, which would explain the slow going on foundation work.

tayser
May 24, 2012, 2:15 AM
yep. the area is notorious for having a lot of Hobson's Bay Silt - hence why most towers on Southbank have above-ground / podium car parking: just too expensive to reinforce everything under ground.

You only ever find deep excavations north of Bourke St in the CBD.

More concreting going on tonight. You'll also notice a dirty great hole in the road - what was the outbound lane of Power St. I presume this has to do with the electricity works that were supposed to take place a couple of weeks ago - when it was proposed Power St would be closed altogether - common sense prevailed and that didn't happen.
