By some recent investigations and first person accounts of skyscrapercity members, the tower has resumed construction:

Excellent! Puxi's first genuine supertall (Wheellock is close but no cigar, and Shimao International's silly spires don't really count ;) )

What is the Metro station closest to this project? And for that matter, what is the Metro system most commonly called in Shanghai?

What is the Metro station closest to this project? And for that matter, what is the Metro system most commonly called in Shanghai?

I believe the current closest station to this project is Tiantong Road on Line 10, although there will be a closer station on Line 12, which is currently under construction and will open in 2012.

The metro system in Shanghai is called Shanghai Metro in English, or 上海地铁 (Shang4hai3 di4tie3), which literally means 'Shanghai Underground Railway', in Chinese.

Another question, was there anything of note on the site previously or does the historic Bund basically terminate just south?

The historic Bund's northern end is at the confluence of the Huangpu River with Suzhou Creek, basically at the Waibaidu (Garden) Bridge. This building is being built north of Suzhou Creek, near the International Ferry Terminal. I believe that this area was previously occupied by nothing of note, primarily being a warehouse district.

Yes, very true; north of Suzhou creek was historically a different settlement/concession from the British one in Huangpu district, I believe. So the old buildings in Hongko (the district immediately north of the Bund) has a very different characteristic in terms of zoning and historical architecture.

On the other hand, I just realized that there is a typo in the name of the thread :brickwall: . Oh, well.

It's currently a big hole in the ground. There is a more active thread on skyscrapercity but there's still not an awful lot to see yet. Think the Shanghai Tower 6 months back, only a smaller hole...

SOM appears to have done some creative work with this design. The generous site has allowed them to break the project into three towers united by common material, color and detail. There also appears to be much green space and green roof ares.

The video shows what appears to be a different glazing on the river side than on the shore side. Is this really the plan?

^ I agree, and I'm partially to blame.

With the Shanghai Tower about 500m across the river, it has no doubt cast a long shadow over this project; it's taller and has a more interesting design.

Then there are people like myself who have chosen not to update this website and others with photos. Without nice, unobstructed views of the plot from above, it's not really worth the time to go out there and do weekly/monthly updates, but now that it's well above ground, I think I (and others) should start documenting its rise.

Expect an update from me soon.

This shot is AWESOME Giallo. A perfect example of the mashing of 'old China' and 'New China' in Shanghai. I love that little area of town even though there's really not much to see there. Qipu Road and its markets don't have as much as they used to. The area has great old Skikumen / rowhouses and classic 'old local flare' though. I used to stay at Hyatt on the Bund from time to time. That's how I know this area so well. Mmmmm.....noodle place 面 ;)

This could surpass the Burj Khalifa as the most iconic supertall of the century.

Edit: Sorry, thought this was the thread for the Shanghai Tower

Bah! Insulting poor Magnolia Center with this post!

I for one have not let this building go under the radar. I have been following it rather closely as it will be the lone supertall in this area and the ONLY TRUE SUPERTALL on the Puxi side of the river in Shanghai (Shimao doesn't count; 85 meter spires?!? Really?)

Obviously Lujiazui in Pudong gets all the publicity in Shanghai because that's where the big boys are (Jin Mao, SWFC, Shanghai Tower). It would be great to see the skyline hop the river and start to really develop in the area of Magnolia Center as well, adding a framed gateway on the Huangpu for both sides of the city, and the Bund just south.
