Is it just me or is Whole Foods seems a bit high end for the Demographics of the area?
I think Yonge and Eglington or Yonge/St Clair would be more appropriate expansion locations. I mean, sure there's York Mills but it's mostly south of the 401 right? Srry I haven't been back to T.O for 5 years.

People though will drive several miles for Whole Foods. There's another one going up at Square One in Mississauga, which is also a "middle income" area, but which will likely draw many of it's patrons from the Mississauga Rd. area, 5+ miles away.

York Mills is only 1km or so South of here.

It's a lot bigger than the supermarket that sat there when the aerial picture was taken (light green roof), but remember Whole Foods stores are often over 60,000 square feet.

Excavation has begun on this project now. It is a large site will not be technically under construction for some time, might be 7 to 8 months before they hit bottom and pour the pads for the cranes.

Still this will change the face of North York.

They need Retail and Leisure space in North York Centre, this complex is huge and will suck up some of the demand that is ramming up the Empress Walk, and North York Civic Centres on the weekend. Very hard to get a seat in the cafes, and stores there, too many people in the underground tunnels. This will open up a fresh node, at Yonge and Sheppard in addition to the existing Sheppard Centre Mall which has been there for 30 years now.

Let's hope the finished product looks as much like an office tower as possible. I love the Nestle building and this would be the first step in urbanizing, no chicagoizing it's surroundings.
Five years ago this would be the tallest building U/C in the GTA!

Sept 11, 2011 Update:

So they seem to be moving pretty fast, with lots of concrete being poured. They'll start laying the floor boards in the south east corner then move clockwise to the other quadrants. They'll usually lay one quadrant and fill another quadrant each day. I guess things move a lot faster once the footing are all in place.

They're also doing some kind of shoring along Yonge Street and blocking one northbound lane at the same time. This work seems to happen only during the weekend, but still causes quite a backup if your approaching the Yonge and Sheppard intersection from the south.

Hullmark Centre is gonna be huge - another condo mall for Nork York Centre which will be connected to the North York underground at Sheppard Centre.

"Over 16,000 m³ (more than 565,000 cubic feet!) of concrete has been poured so far at this three acre site. The centre will sit above the Yonge and Sheppard subway station, with direct indoor access. This has provided some challenges for the project. The south tunnel connection’s structural form work is now underway. For the north tunnel, shoring and excavation will be starting shortly."

Looks like Mel Lastman's Sheppard Subway mantra, build it and the rest will come (I'm not sure if he said exactly that) is coming true. Maybe Sheppard east of Yonge will see a few more talls. Maybe some genius will finally connect the dots and see connecting Downsview Station to Yonge/ Sheppard Station makes sense too..

Here is the latest update on the Hullmark Centre Towers that are under construction at the corner of Yonge and Sheppard. The towers developed by Tridel and Hullmark Developments will not only contain massive numbers of residential units but, business and retail functions as well.

I dont know why but the render for this proposal is really attractive. Maybe because of its height, or just the fact that it has a good solid approach to it. The podium is great and becasue it curves inward, that whole square will be very lively. I wish other developers will take attention on how to do a proper podium. Wish this and emerald got build closer to the core.

North York needs this more than downtown. North York needs a true commercial and retail square. Downtown has enough. (Dundas Square and coming One Bloor)

Ah yes, but shouldn't we be seeing hints of the left upper podium by now? The right tower is already 16 storeys higher than the main, connecting podium.
