Hospital Expansion

It took 22 years for Queensway Carleton Hospital to experience its first major redevelopment project, but in 1999 the Hospital saw the opening of the Childbirth Centre – the result of the closure of the Ottawa Grace Hospital and transfer of its mother/baby program to QCH. In addition, QCH opened its first CT Scanner for service. After these exciting events, it would be another 5 years before QCH opened the doors on Phase 2 of its redevelopment project.

Western Ottawa is one of the fastest growing areas in Canada with a high population of seniors and young families making the expansion necessary. Phase 2 of the redevelopment plan included a three-storey plus basement addition of 117,000 square foot building to the east side of the existing hospital. This new space accommodates the Emergency Department, a new Intensive Care Unit (I.C.U.), a combined Rehabilitation – Geriatric Unit and a 23-bed Medicine Inpatient Unit. Another 4,650 square foot building on the north side of the hospital has been redeveloped to house the Hospital’s Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Suite.

In April 2010, MPP Bob Chiarelli announced approval to move forward with construction tendering of the third phase of the restructuring redevelopment project. This will include an additional 70,000 square feet of renovations, primarily to Diagnostic Imaging and a 140,000 square foot, four-story addition on the north side of the Hospital which will accommodate new Operating Rooms, an expanded ambulatory care service, cardiopulmonary, rehabilitation services, inpatinet beds and a satellite dialysis unit. The project also includes renovations to Pharmacy, Laboratory Services and other support departments.
