Don't run that red light -- you may be fined

The City of Ottawa is nearly doubling the number of intersections equipped with cameras to nab drivers who run red lights.

Thirty-three intersections across the city will now be monitored for red light infractions, up from 18 sites.

However, not every intersection will be monitored 24 hours a day. The city will use 13 cameras, rotating them through various locations.

It's currently a $325-fine for running a red light. Meanwhile, a red light violation in a Community Safety Zone, including school zones, is $490.

It's believed expanding the red light camera program will cost the city an estimated $1.5 million.

Well with the kind of council right now, the more revenue reason is obviously in top two or three. Personally I think it is the main reason.

Well with the kind of council right now, the more revenue reason is obviously in top two or three. Personally I think it is the main reason.

I think it's a fine reason (pardon the pun). But I'm serious. I'd much rather have the city get ticket revenue from red light runners than raise taxes by the same amount.
