As you already know I made another thread, so I thought I would try a city.

A year ago I created a city called Tennington City.It had way too many mistakes and was badly planned. So I thought I would make a secong edition of Tennington. The old Tennington has a population of 2.1 million. The NEW Tennington now has a population in the 800,000's.

Few renders will be made.

I'll add textures a little bit later. The textures will be from CGtextures and Amazingtextures.

More details will be added on the buildings((lots/some!!!)

I'm thinking of placing Tennington in the Long Island Coast.I think the downtown will be placed on a peninsula.(not sure though.Any more ideas to put this is apperciated)

Here are a few shots.

flip your buildings faces so they are white. Otherwise you won't be able to do renders in the future.

It reminds me of my first city. Keep going looks like a good start.

Heh, reminds me a lot of the kinds of cities I used to make when I first started out here.

No comments for the last update.:(

Maybe a little more comments after this update:

Outline of the Peninsula is about finished.

http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/zz114/Flamesrule/TenningtonCity-SketchupOutline-1.png?t=1264886899

So far a little Skyline has developed.

http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/zz114/Flamesrule/TenningtonCity-Sketchup6.png?t=1264887212

I'll do some imformation on the buildings.

Well I'm thinking of putting my city on a fictional island BUT this will be on a peninsula on the island.I need some names though.

Make sense?

still waiting for a rendered shot to see how it looks.:)

plus I feel maybe some more space between the buildings and the
roof tops could do with some details

I really like the bulkiness of the tallest building, have a name for it yet?

Dac150
Jan 31, 2010, 4:42 PM
I like the overall building designs and layout, but the scale of the buildings are a little off from one to another. I also suggest doing one block at a time and then paste it into the grid; it helps in preventing lag. Add some green to the cityscape too, it looks like you made a shoreline; it’ll make great for a park.

Keep it up!

Flamesrule

^^

Thanks! I'll consider that for the upcoming buildings and the exsited buildings.

So should the smaller building be taller or should the taller building be smaller for it to be even???

Here are the possible names for the tallest buildings:

1.Conwell Enterprises or Conwell World Headquarters

2.Cartier INC

3.ReinCorp Enterprises

Any more ideas????

My Next update will be the history about some of the buildings.

ok first you need to scale your textures so the buildings appear to be in the same scale. Then you should look at how your buildings touch the ground. Right now they all are just pull straight down. Try to add some detail there.

Also you don't have to ask for comments and ideas after every post, the point of a thread is to post comments and ideas.

Your designs for the most part are well thought out and executed, but as others are saying you should try and bring them all in alignment in terms of scale. Also, try to add some more detail at the base of these buildings (perhaps add bigger bases for trading floors, atriums, public space, retail, etc). Focus on quality of buildings and not initial quantity.

Thanks!I totally get what MikeR was saying. I'll work on that.I'll also edit the scale for the textures.

Noob question but when i change the texture size to 11.00 meters(across) and 8.54 meters (up) it just doesn't look like the same scale to the tallest building. Am I doing it right to m ake it the same scale????

Vellu
Feb 21, 2010, 2:28 PM
Billboards - and any text for that matter - allways add to the realism of a city, so good job!

When you model buildings, do you consider the use of the building beforehand? Like "this is going to be an office building, this is going to be an aparment building etc." and then model the building according to its use. The use of the building also affects the building's location in the city. These are just some things you might want to consider, when making your way towards a realistic city model.

Keep those updates coming!

Your highrises look good, but to make the city look more interesting, you could try to add some lowrises and also maybe some older buildings. All those buildings look quite postmodern now, so you could try to find some textures of buildings of other architectural style.

A new Building:

The West Wilson BIC Chruch.

http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/zz114/Flamesrule/Tennington/TenningtonCity-Sketchup26.png?t=1271111891

The West Wilson BIC Church was built on 1895 and is one of the oldest chruchest in the downtown area of Tennington. It was first used as a school house but then in 1904 it was used as a BIC Church. the chrcuh was built by Peter Samson and took 3 years to build. It took so long to build becasue of the huge recession of 1891-1900.

In 1961 huge renavations were made because the church was being torn down due becuase it was abanded. In 1963 the renavations were done and the church was back up to the people. Today the chruch is a wonder in the eEast coast of the United States.

Hope you like the history.

Also in the next week I will show you a map because I finished the buisness area.

EDIT i am also making new buildings and making them more art deco and older.

As you allready realised yourself you have a lot of work to do but your city definitly has some potential.

first you should try to get the building dimensions more realistically an those textures need more work.

you might try to finish a building first in detail and textures and then place it in your city not just one that semes like a placeholder volume with random textures on it ;)

Flamesrule

consider size ,dimensions and textures etc.

Also should Tennington be on hold for a month or should I still keep Tennington and not do any stops at all?

For me, the porblem is the textures but not the buildings......

Nice variance in the building styles and sizes - it makes the city more interesting for viewers to look at. The Olde Town is very refreshing addition.

You asked about scaling textures. Here's one way to do it:
- First, decide the floor to floor height of your building (always model to scale). 4 meters or 13 - 14 feet would be quite realistic.
- Then count the number of floors your texture has. Let's say it shows 10 floors for example. This makes the texture 40 meters / 130 - 140 feet high.
- Open the Materials window and select the texture you want to scale.
- Go to the Edit tab. There's text boxes for the height and width of the texture (just under texture's file name).
- Type 40 in the height box. The width should change accordingly.
- Now you have scaled you're texture, you just have to position it correctly.

I see you've also tried Kerkythea. Try the preset #17 (Path tracing progressive). It's the best preset for outdoor scenes lit only by sun and sky. It takes a bit longer, but after 50 - 150 passes your textures should look really clear.

I'm guessing that at this point you've got about 2,500-3,000 residents living in high-rise condos/apartments, and a commercial district that supports about twice that number of workers. It seems to me that you should either build more apartment buildings (~20-stories-or-so structures) before you expand the financial district further, or consider adding an inbound interstate/ferry terminal. In any case, happy building!

Yeah you definetly need lots more housing, resi blocks etc. I know their boring, but it'll help ground your commercial heart once you have suburbs around it. From what i can see your textures appear much better in relation to scale:tup:

After hours of thinking it through I've decided to make

Tennington 2.0

This is what it'll include:
Trees
Sidewalsk
ALL buildings scaled textures
newer layout
new buildings
more lowrises and less post modern buildings
more historic buildings
More detailed buildings
photo real roof texture
and lots more!!!!

Now, here is a little preview of the New Tennington. I still have to add the textures and the trees to it.

http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/zz114/Flamesrule/TenningtonCity2-SketchupCity.png?t=1274126733

why why why!!!! your last city was very good! though hopefully with 2.0, you will make the textures to scale with other buildings, and make sure there aren't any buildings with the top floor only being a half floor! (try to make the textures to scale with the dimensions)

The textures are so grainy they conceal the amount and detail of low rises!
One of the typical problems (specially for me) is that we just make high rise or skyscraper cities (no relation) and struggle with proportion.

I'd like to see clay model shot of your skyline.

Clay model coming up for my next update!

Not all textures are grainy, some are good. What's the trick downsizing them and enlarging them again to lose weight? jpgs are fat. pngs are slim.

Honestly I just use MS Paint and create a tile. But I meant the textures of some of the latter low rises I was complimenting. Sometimes it's just a matter of raising the roof a lil bit so that windows have some frame space on the last floor.

And you might wanna smooth out the corners of that perfectly triangular blue building.

Actually at this stage this is getting to be a very promising city (only reason I'm posting)

Well, I started a new Dsitrict called Winsdor Area District. It is a mix between commercial buildings and residential complexes and buildings.
here is a Emporis Shot of the TellComm Building:

Another shot of the Winsdor District:

And lastly a map of the whole city:
http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/zz114/Flamesrule/TenningtonCity2-SketchupCity2-1.png?t=1276883435
Orange: Buisness District
Blue: Winsdor Area District
Light yellow:Stadium District
light green: Wilson
Dark Green/brown: Olde Town
Darker Yellow:Park

Now, I'm thinking that I'm am ALL DONE witht he highrises due to this is a 900,000 city and this has been enough. SO the rest will be rowhouses, convention center and lowrises. Whatcha think?
Also last chance to state what you think will be a good hockey team. ANy last ideas before I name it by myself?

I like the pencil-outline style of rendering that you introduced recently. Your city is looking great. Overall, the skyline is entirely believable and the designs consistent. It is starting to look a bit like Lower Manhattan.

Hockey has always seemed a bit synonymous with Canada to me. "Rouge" is the french word for "Red", which is the primary color of Canada's flag. You could call your team the "Rouges" as a subtle tip of the hat to Canada. As a bonus, it sounds a bit like "Rogues" which isn't a bad name either.

Well, I both liked your team names but I think I'm going ot Jhoward's name "rouges" becuase the main primary team color jersey would be red and black. Also because I don't think "soaring Eagles" would fit into hockey.(then again, a hockey team is named Thrashers:haha:) Though I might use "soaring Eagles" as the basketball team. Thanks for the team name tho.

Whle a construction worker was working on the side fence, these kids bumped into him and he fell and died. The fences were very low and so it was very vulerable and east to fall. Well I'm thinking I'm renaming the Shopping District to the Manhiem West District. It will mainly be tuorists and shopping. There will be a few highrises here and there and will be mainly be based off the SoHo in New York City.

SoHo:

www.jonathanstephens.com/newyork-large/Soho

The Port will probably be moved to the the east more and will also include old Warehouses and low cost rowhouses. This is where the poor people will live. There will also be poverty there. You know, Tennington isn't the nicest city out there. The Civic Center won't be for awhile but will stay in the same place as the map before this post. Right Beisde the park I'm thinking of adding a small island that will consist of small houses and rowhouses. If the island does NOT get built I'm thinking of placing small, dirty rowhouses with lots of greenery.

Tell me what you think!
