Sudbury, Ontario... population 160,270, MSA 160,770... with the right to brag of having the western hemmishpere's largest and most aesthetically appealing smokestack (1,250 feet... as tall as the Empire State Building).

Kaesong-si, DPRK... population 309,440, and quite possibly the only city in the world whose main street has such a distinct beginning and end, as seen below.

Also home to Kijŏng-dong, population ZERO, which would win the award for most impressive skyline per population if it only had "city" status. However, I guess that it needs people to live in it before that can happen.

No, you're good, Siwart. It's sound.
This thread doesn't specify the US only. Goldcoast is a welcome relief from another large beach-side skyline: Dubai.

I'll throw St. John's, Newfoundland (Canada) into the mix. Internationally its undoubtedly a lesser-known city. With an Urban population of 165,346 (Metro 196,966) it stands as the oldest English-founded city in North America.

I'd also argue its one of the most unique and colorful.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d1/St.John%27s_NFLD.jpg
Panorama view of downtown from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._John%27s,_Newfoundland_and_Labrador)

This panorama really doesn't do the city's colorfulness justice though, and in fact I'd probably argue that the view from the harbour is one of the worst ways to view the city. I suggest anyone interested check out Lyndon Keating's page of photos:

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/28023748@N07/tags/skyline/

With a few new developments having begun this year, and more steps being taken for an improved downtown, St. John's is meeting some of its untapped potential.

While it certainly doesn't have the best skyline for a metro less than 600,000, I've always thought Billings, Montana punched well above its weight.
City pop is only 110,000, metro 160,000.

:previous:Billings has a great little skyline. I think I have a few of Coeur d'Alene which has a nice skyline too.

Boise's is tricky sometimes. The view you posted doesn't take in all of the towers and buildings and often the best views of our skyline are taken from an angle which allows more of the buildings to be in the photo vs the straight on view from the Depot. We finally have a new tallest under construction which will really change our skyline.

These are my photos of the Boise skyline, all are a year or more old. The building under construction in the first photo is completed.

Well, why not have ample parking when there is plenty of open space and no rail transit?

Well, why not have ample parking when there is plenty of open space and no rail transit?

The goal should probably be to have the footprint of parking as small as you can. I didn't see an argument against parking in what he said, rather there was probably a better way to do it, like consolidate it into a smaller garage or something. Of course that adds costs.

Anyway, not that I really care, but this has turned frm a "Best Small-City Skylines" to "Post ANY Small-City Skyline." lol Not only are some of these not the best, some of them are not even nice, and even more to the point, many of them are not even small cities as defined by the title of the thread (i.e. "Metro Population < 600,000). Hartford is the center of an area of 1.2 million. Even Worcester is the anchor of a metro area of nearly 800,000.

mhays

Well, why not have ample parking when there is plenty of open space and no rail transit?

Economically it's tough to make anything other than a surface lot work in a small city, because land is usually cheaper than the construction cost for a garage. That's what I was referring to by "that's a tough part in smaller cities." That's why our small cities usually aren't very urban unless they started out that way, or they control growth, maybe aided by everything bunching along a beach or something.

However, in this case they could build a garage for added cost to avoid having surface parking. A park would be nice. Or replace half the lot with a hotel, and at least double-deck the rest.

Tourist attractions rarely want to make themselves hard to visit. But maybe a skybridge over the freeway (in addition to the underpass apparently shown) and a free shuttle bus could make it easier for tourists to get there, and reduce parking demand.

Unfortunately, the only way that sort of thing seems likely is if they get ambitous about building more stuff (like a hotel or a HOF expansion) and can only fit it in by stacking things. They won't do it for quality of life alone. That's why I like more expensive cities where land-efficiency is an economic imperative for most things.

The thread's for best skyline's of cities, whose metro area has 600,000 or less.

These three are part of Greater NY, as I'm sure you know.:)

I keep wanting to add Albany, NY, which has the most impressive skyline I've ever seen for a town of less than 100K, but this area has over a million.

London, Ontario has a impressive skyline (pop. 475 000)

Juneau, AK and Ketchikan, AK are definitely up there among small towns I could happily live in. The climate is colder than I prefer, but I could always travel when needed. Both have some of the most breathtaking scenery Earth has to offer. I didn't get to spend much time in either when I visited but I got the impression both were incredibly warm, close-knit communities which I really love (and need). Storied history, access to great seafood, and then as you've shown, they're also incredibly dense for their size. Yeah, the Alaska Panhandle is awesome and underrated.

Speaking of Alaska, Anchorage might be my favorite skylines period, large cities included. Just the combination of towering mountains and a lovely small but dense city against the ocean is entrancing.

Ding, ding, ding! Burlington wins, especially for a small city (i.e. not a suburb of a larger metro area. It has a decent skyline for a town under 50,000 residents and it is surrounded by the Adirondacks on the other side of Lake Champlain and Mount Mansfield and Camel's Hump located behind Burlington.

well, Balneário Camboriu certainly will have its skyline improved (at least in height, since some of the buildings are quite "Parana City Tacky Like")

I grew up in Burlington, VT. Visited it again this past Christmas and was shocked by the development that has happened. And btw...Burlington's metro area is just under 200,000. It's an ideal city with spectacular natural surroundings.
