Looks like for the next Civic Holiday it'll be known as George Hamilton Day in Hamilton.

On Aug. 1, 2010, the City of Burlington will celebrate Joseph Brant Day. Toronto will observe Simcoe Day. Guelph will mark John Galt Day.

If the Hamilton Historical Board has its way, this city will celebrate George Hamilton Day.

The historical board wants the city to join a growing number of Ontario municipalities that recognize a prominent historical figure on the August civic holiday.

The Ontario Municipal Act of 2005 permits a municipality to declare and observe the day as it wishes.

The board has recommended naming the holiday after George Hamilton, the city's founder and member of the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada from 1821 to 1830.

Hamilton was a captain in the War of 1812 and took part in the battles of Queenston Heights and Lundy's Lane.

When a cholera-plagued ship of immigrants sailed into Hamilton Harbour in 1832, it was Hamilton who stepped forward and convinced townspeople not to leave them to die on the ship. Some of the main streets downtown still bear the names of his family members, including John, James, Hunter, and Augusta streets.

The historical board is proposing to celebrate Hamilton himself in 2010, then choose another notable local historical figure to celebrate on George Hamilton Day each year.

The board is hopeful the city marks the occasion with programs and events in the community, with the possibility to expand an education program throughout the rest of the year.
