I was up nice and early today for an appointment so I thought I'd take advantage and go on a photoshoot around town. Hope you guys enjoy it.

I started just north of Robie. I love these little brick flats scattered around the neighbourhood.

Such nice detailing.

Coburg Tower. A nice example of resdential density in the area.

Dalhousie's new Administration building going up on Coburg Road. It is quite far along. With facade about to be going on and almost all of the concrete appears to have been poored. So far so good in my eyes.

Onward to the rest of the Dalhousie Campus.

The amazing Killiam Library. One of my favourite buildings in Halifax. The atrium is such a cool place.

Looking up the median of University at the Henry Hicks Building.

I forgot that they were planning on tearing down one of the old houses on the corner of University and LeMarchant. It opens up the corner quite nicely actually. I don't know if there is a plan for this site but it has been sodded over and has created a nice place to sit in the grass and study.

And now the new Research Institute.
It's coming along very nicely with the first bit of the facade now up. I had no idea there was going to be such a large atrium in the centre. It looks great.

And the crappy new addition. The only thing I can say about it is it does sort of blend in even though its big and ugly.

The old grand Lord Nelson Hotel which is actually a very large building! Too bad they did such a crap job with the addition many years ago.

The Morris Street side of Gerard with the Stone clad base and the new facade being installed. It's still covered with a paper but I did manage to find a tiny piece that was exposed. It looks like a pretty dull grey. But I won't judge until it is finished.

And down to the waterfront and the new headquaters for Emera. Note the giant pile of rubble out front that is as big as a house!

Coming up on the new Farmers Market. The crane on site was moving the large barriers around. Not sure why, as they were only installed a month or two ago.

And back around to the waterfront side of the old power plant.

Awesome job jono...good pics and a great selection of what is going on in this city...and for the record...there is more happening right now than any other point of the last 6 years...if only we could get salter street, UG and IP goin...I would be a very happy boy!!

Ohh and around the base of Gerald hall is not real stone, it is product called Should-ice.....fairly authentic looking, way better than per-cast....but it is fake

Great pics, but a couple of notes... since Robie runs north-south, those brick flats are just to the west of Robie.

I also agree on the Sacred Heart School addition... not good. That concrete block that tries and fails to pretend that is stone should be banished from every architects bag o' tricks... horrible stuff.

I didn't realize that Dal had torn down the Grad House, the place you refer to next to the SUB. Spent many a wasted night there drinking way back when. Does anyone know if they have relocated, or is it gone forever? R.I.P.

I don't know if the new grad House is up and running,
but the plan was\is to use another old house kitty-corner to where the former grad house was located

....and I heard that there was plans to redevelop the site.....but the individual who told me this was unsure of what was proposed or what the time line was

Great pics - missing the old hometown.

I also wanted to point out that EVERYTHING about the Homburg building at Barrington and Morris is crap, not just the roof.

Nice Work.. Had a laugh at the BellAliant sign. If I had a dollar for everytime the changed the sign on that building.. which is funny because its really the same company, over and over and over..

Yeah, exactly... didn't it start with the old round style (always reminded me of an elephant) MT&T logo? I do remember that just prior to the G7 in 1995 they installed the slanted capitalized MT&T logo. I don't recall when that was replaced with the Aliant sign, and now this, which to my eye is not at all impressive.

Great tour Jono, thanks! Personally I *don't mind* the SH addition - a bit uninteresting but handsome enough.

There was also the purple "MTT" (rather than MT&T) with the crescent that appeared around 1998 :P

I think if you go intot he Sobey's down on Queen they have a huge photo on one of the walls -- expanded essentially into a mural -- of the city back in the mid-80s and you can see the old MT&T sign on the building.

lol, might be useful to take a photo of the photo.

The few times I've been up on the roof of the Maritime Centre, on the way up you have to go through a gauntlet of passageways and doors to get up to the outside, and in the last room you go through, ducking through pipes and ducts, on the wall beside the door they've got all of the old signs in pieces stacked up hahaha.

Nice photos. They have gotten to an interesting point with the power plant - you can get a much better idea of what the interior is like now.

I kind of wish I had taken more photos when I was in town, but my visits always go by really quickly. I also wish it didn't take 2 flights and 7 hours to get across the country.

Welcome Haligonia :) - I assume you are talking about the rowhouses at the top of the post? They are on Jubilee just west of Robie (http://maps.google.ca/?ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Nova+Scotia&ll=44.642426,-63.588824&spn=0,359.995215&t=h&z=18&layer=c&cbll=44.643269,-63.589484&panoid=CrmGjFz2izIWE71bV2Yh3g&cbp=13,271.11,,0,2.38).

And yes, those are the ones I was talking about. I wish we had more brick houses around the city, they seem to be more classy than the wooden houses that are common on the peninsula.

Onward to the rest of the Dalhousie Campus.

The amazing Killiam Library. One of my favourite buildings in Halifax. The atrium is such a cool place.

Thanks for all the photos. The Killam Library is a great Halifax building. I wonder if the new Central Library designers could get some ideas from the Killam Library and incorporate a great atrium into its design.

When I went to Dalhousie back in the late 70's they had a room where you could go and get a music record and listen with headphones to a record player. It seemed very innovative at the time. Maybe the new Central Library could have a similar room, maybe with a MP3 system, so that people could go there and listen to music with headphones (like the headphones that people buy on airplanes). In addition to a library of books they could have a library of music.

I was at Dal in the mid 70's (and mid 80's, and mid 90's). I remember that room and those dual turntables, and listening to Paul McCartney's 'Ram', and Innervisions. There was a woman who oversaw that room, think her last name was Tittle, and her brother (and her) played ina band called Murphy's Law. The atrium didn't have a roof and the snow would come in. zet

I haven't seen Killam Library since they added the atrium roof. How does it look? I haven't been back to the Killam library since the late 70's. I hope that the new Central Library can match the Killam Library in architectural design.

perhaps someone who is good with uploading pictures will take a few shots. The coutyard is now like being inside, the roof if I remember is nice. There may be a coffee shop in the atrium now. ZET

I took some music courses at Dal in the 80's and spent a bit of time in the listening room. Up on the forth or fifth floor I think. Big collection, and nice little cubicles around the perimeter with windows overlooking the campus and private turntables for listening.
